EXECUTIVE SECRETARY’S COLUMN Hello,

I hope everyone has been having a good spring sports season despite the crazy weather this year. Rain and snow and more rain have made things difficult for all of you. So hopefully we are looking at great weather as we head into the post season tournaments. Good Luck to everyone!

Summer is just around the corner and that means plenty of summer camps, tournaments, 7 on 7 compe - titions, summer weight room and summer jobs. With that said, please be mindful of your athletes. As coaches we control how much we ask and expect of our athletes during the summer contact days. Remember that it is summer, not competition season, and kids need a chance to be kids. I can’t be Drew Potthoff more emphatic about the time we are demanding of our athletes in the summer. Make sure that you Executive Secretary plan your summer with your kids and their families in mind as well as your program needs. It’s a good Coaches idea, especially around the 4 th of July, to plan some off days so that families can be together to celebrate Association the holiday. This year the 4 th of July falls on a Thursday; try to schedule that Wednesday and/or Friday as off days with your athletes and their families. If we can reduce some of the stress on our athletes during the short summer months, it can only bring you rewards from your athletes in that they will be fresher with less burn out come August.

Also, don’t forget about camp insurance for your summer camps. There is information on the changes for summer camps that went in to effect two summers ago in this issue of the TORCH as well as information from our insurance carrier Loomis & LaPann, Inc.

Speaking of insurance, as of this August, if you are a member of the Illinois Coaches Association your lia - bility coverage increases from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000! This is a great benefit to our members. If you are not a member yet you can enroll online at www.icacoach.org . Also, if your Athletic Director and/or Principal is interested in getting memberships in the ICA for the entire coaching staff, we are waiving the school fee for the coming year and only charging $9 per coach to join the ICA. That includes all the mem - bership benefits as well as the $2,000,000 liability coverage.

I am very excited to announce a new section for each issue of the TORCH starting with this issue called, “From the IHSA”. Each edition will feature an article from a different member of the IHSA staff. We kick off this new section with an article from Executive Director Craig Anderson; be sure to check it out!

Good luck to everyone as you finish out your spring seasons and say good bye to your seniors. As always the ICA is here to serve all coaches in all sports ! If there is ever anything that I, or the ICA, can do for you feel free to contact us anytime. Have a great summer and we will be back with another issue of the TORCH in the fall!

Coaches, in the end, our career W/L record just won’t matter. It won’t be what we will want others to remember us by. All that will matter will be who we helped, how we went about it & the lasting impression we left on those who crossed our path. live each day with that in mind. 5 TIPS T O HELP A THLETES S TAY HYDRA TED 1 KEEP HYDRA TION T OP OF MIND • R emind athletes to check their urine color before practice. If it’ s the color of pale lemonade, that’ s a sign of being hydrated. • T ake weather into account and give athletes opportunities to drink during practice. • T each athletes to pay attention to how they feel, including their thirst and energy levels. 2 KEEP FL UID LEVELS UP • A thletes should drink enough fl uid to maintain hydration without over-drinking. • Flavored, cold, lightly salted sports drinks like Gatorade® Thirst Quencher are important, because sodium helps maintain the athlete’ s desire to drink and retain the fl uid consumed.

3 KEEP THE BOD Y COOL • R emind athletes to drink cool fl uids to help maintain their body temperature. • If your athletes experience heat illness, help them lower their body temperature by laying them down in a cool place with their legs elevated, applying cool, wet towels to their body and having them drink cool fl uids. 4 KEEP HYDRA TED BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER A CTIVITY • A thletes need to think about their entire athletic schedule when it comes to fueling (not just when they are competing). • Encourage them to drink plenty of fl uids throughout the day to replace the fl uids lost through sweat. 5 KEEP A RECO VER Y SCHEDULE • R est and recovery are an essential part of avoiding heat illness. • Ensure your athletes have time for breaks during practices. • Encourage athletes to get 6-8 hours of sleep each night in a cool environment if possible.

Bill Shepard

8 Man Football by Bill Shepard (Head Football Coach Christian Life/OLSHA Coop) On September 15th 2018, Christian Life hosted the Illinois School for the Deaf from Jacksonville Illinois. On that weekend 8-man football was being celebrated in Illinois and around the country promoting school spirit, program pride, and the participation of football. High School teams across the United States like Wichita County, Kansas, North Shelby, Missouri, Carey, Idaho, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Hayden, Colorado, or Davenport Oklahoma, still experience football on Friday nights or Saturday afternoons, and 8 Man football has given them the option of keeping their program, maintain school pride and develop community spirit.

One can look up the scores in the papers, online sites and national sites like MAX Preps and notice how the teams did. Some states like Iowa, Michigan, and California have multiple playoffs levels and they take their football seriously. In the fall of 2018 Maine adopted 8-man football, New York State had two regions/sections playing 8-man football, public/private schools in Mississippi (21 teams) and Louisiana (12-15) are now playing competitive 8 Man football. In 2018 Wisconsin had their version of a 16 team playoff crowning a champion in November for 8man. Illinois had a play - off too and a 4 team playoff crowned Milford Coop I8FA champion on November 9 th at .

Some states like Idaho play on a regulation 11-man field while others have a modified size either 80 yards long by 40 yards wide (Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri) or like in Illinois and Wisconsin 100 yards long by 40 yards wide. Whatever the dimensions or size of the team, those who gather on Friday night or Saturday afternoon come to play the game they love and once the Star Spangled banner is played, the coin toss completed and the ball is kicked off, it is real football.

8-Man has a few different rules to follow. There are 3 less players on offense and defense, the last 2 men on the line of scrimmage are eligible, numbers don’t matter and 5 have to be on the line but the rest is football. Though a faster pace game in some respects it is still blocking, tackling, scoring and running with the football. The hard adjustment for coaches and players is how to get an advantage on the other team out of an even formation. Many teams have little trouble adapting their offensive scheme to 8-man football, but the defense has to work hard to combat the spread and power forma - tions. As a coach you can’t hide a weaker player for it becomes a battle of stud athlete verses stud athlete. Tackling in space and on the edge improves and effort increases for there are more players to substitute and give players rest. Injuries have decreased and competition becomes more even.

Since January of 2017 responses have come in through letter, email or film of programs across the country that have been experiencing the 8-man game. Some of the programs have experienced renewed participation and support like Oakfield, Wisconsin, or others their program has been saved like Wisconsin Heights, Wisconsin, North Shelby in Missouri, or Wichita County in Leoti, Kansas.

In January of 2018 teams came together at Ottawa Marquette High School in Ottawa, Illinois, and formed the Illinois 8 Man Football Association; for - mulating bylaws, a schedule, and direction for those playing 8-man football. This organization is growing with many new members. Teams like Polo, River Ridge, North Fulton, Pawnee, Flanagan Coop, Danville Schlarman, Metro East Lutheran, and Bunker Hill have joined to save their programs and give their athletes a chance to experience football within a different format. They joined schools like ISD, Alden-Hebron, Lake Forest, Milford Coop, Judah Christian, Elgin Westminster, and Christian Life/OlSHA/Keith COOP.

8-Man football here in Illinois has been a game changer. Like many of the schools out of Wisconsin, the Illinois schools that are playing “8 Man” they have been playoff teams in the past, but they were faced with a choice due to dwindling numbers, to fold or try 8 man. To a team the choice to go to eight man has given them the ability to not only survive but compete again.

There have been a number of articles written since 2016 on 8-man football and whether it is going to last in Illinois. The interest is growing and the participation is up. IHSA will probably take it over in the near future but till then, schools, coaches and athletes have an opportunity to participate in the game they love and enjoy it. Like those who gathered on the field in Rockford, Illinois, on a sunny Saturday in September 2018, people came and the game was played, it was football.

Feel free to check out the I8FA website at www.I8FA.org and any question on 8 man football contact any of the I8FA member teams or I8FA president John Lalor. NEW! IBCA Hall of Fame Coaches

Facing off for the first time in one of the biggest events of the season, were two former teammates, both Hall of Fame Coaches and both winners of 800+ games. The Nokomis Redskins hosted the Lincoln Railsplitters in a non-conference game that packed the gym with former classmates, relatives, and great basketball fans. Preceding the Saturday, January 26 game, the IBCA recognized Nokomis High School for their 1526 all-time wins and counting. Since the 1909-1910 season, the Redskins have won countless conference and tournament championships, captured 23 district or regional titles, and earned 5 trips to the IHSA State Tournament.

Past coaches who were also inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame include: Loren Wallace – who travelled from Arizona to witness the game between his two former players - and the late Maury Hough who also coached the Lady Redskins to class 1A state championships in 1998 & 1999.

The last Illinois coach to surpass the 800 victory mark was current IBCA President Neil Alexander during the 2017-18 season. Coach Al gladly presented his former teammate with a Silver Whistle – a token of apprecia - tion from the IBCA.

At this time, the IBCA congratulates Coach Steve Kimbro and all players, coaches and fans – past and present – on both great achievements.
