GÁBOR TARKÖVI BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER The „Berlin“ model was developed in close cooperation with Gábor Tarkövi (Solo Trumpet of the Berliner Philharmoniker): The „Berlin“ Bb and C trumpets play very easily, have a bright, bril- liant sound paired with excellent intonation. ::: Stimmung: Bb ::: Mundrohr: Messing ::: Schallstück: 132 mm, Goldmessing ::: Ventilstock: L - Heavy - zylindrisch Tune: Bb Leadpipe: Yellowbrass Bell: 5.2“, Goldbrass Valve Section: L - Heavy - cylindrical The Heavy models also have an easy response, are slightly brighter in ::: Stimmung: Bb ::: Mundrohr: Goldmessing ::: Schallstück: 132 mm, Goldmessing ::: Ventilstock: ML - Heavy - konisch sound, and convey the ideal feel for orchestral musicians. I play the Schagerl „Vienna“ model, which has quickly found a place in my heart! Not so much because of its great name, but more ROBERT ROTHER so because of its sound spectrum, which even at fortissimo always MNOZIL BRASS gives me the feeling that there is still „a little something left in the tank“. The trumpet is open in all registers and the intonation does full justice to the good reputation of the Schagerl name. This is a trumpet which leaves nothing to be desired. This trumpet is powerful; it packs a punch, but is also flexible and HANS GANSCH lyrical. I love the feel one gets playing it. It’s a trumpet for strong, TRUMPET LEGEND mature players and is intended for professional players, or those who want to become one. If you find the tone darker than your taste, you can choose to equip the horn with a more conventionally sized bell (132 mm). I play the larger bell (137mm) because I prefer a horn with a well-defined ::: Stimmung: Bb ::: Mundrohr: Goldmessing ::: Schallstück: 130 mm oder 137 mm - Heavy, Goldmessing ::: Ventilstock: L resistance. THOMAS GANSCH The Ganschhorn, especially developed for me together with the music store Schagerl, is an ideal instrument for an “allrounder”. I MNOZIL BRASS can use it for all music styles, no matter if I play in a Big band, a symphony-orchestra, for chamber music, at the studio or with the brass band. The special form of this trumpet is a great advantage when you are on stage and want to entertain. ::: Stimmung: Bb ::: Mundrohr: wechselbar ::: Schallstück: 130 mm, Goldmessing ::: Ventilstock: ML Tune: Bb Leadpipe: changeable Bell: 5.12“, Goldbrass Valve Section: ML Other advantages are the vertical valve sections, which are easier to play than the usual rotary trumpets – a gorgeous instrument for ::: Stimmung: Bb ::: Mundrohr: wechselbar ::: Schallstück: 132 mm, Goldmessing ::: Ventilstock: ML - Heavy highest quality standards. Tune: Bb Leadpipe: changeable Bell: 5.2“, Goldbrass Valve Section: ML - Heavy The design comes from my wish to have a rotary valve instrument due to the different articulation you get compared to piston valves. I find the rotary sounds more precise and there is a smaller “dead spot” between when you push the valve and when the next Model note comes out clearly. This is particularly noticeable when playing quickly in the upper „Raven“Bb register (something I like to do). Rotary trumpets vary from their piston cousins in another way than just the valves… the lead pipe on a typical rotary is very short and goes from the mouthpiece straight into the 1st valve. The lead pipe on a piston trumpet is nearly 4 times as long, it goes out towards the bell and back into the 3rd valve. This difference in lead pipe length has a considerable effect on the sound and feel of the trumpet, particularly the power in the upper register. So the Raven was conceived to be a rotary valved trumpet with a long lead pipe. This lead to several prototypes of different shapes and configurations until the beautiful instrument you see now. It actually still has the lead pipe going into the 1st valve (like any rotary) but only after a long trip out towards the bell and then back towards the mouthpiece – giving a length similar to a piston trumpet. JAMES MORRISON The ‘cornet – like’ appearance was due to the fact that the rotors needed to be placed low (increasing the vertical dimension) and this lead to a decreased horizontal length – like MULTIINSTRUMENTALIST a cornet. But as far as the tubing goes, this is all trumpet. The valve actuators, that look like pistons, were placed on top – so the instrument can be played with one hand. I need this for various reasons, including using a plunger mute, playing piano at the same time and conducting a big band whilst playing. It means the Raven is played ‘upright’ like a piston trumpet, rather than on it’s side like most rotarys. In this respect it is similar to that other wonderful Schagerl – the Gansch horn. One characteristic of the Raven is that it is extremely warm sounding when played soft- ly, almost like a flugel horn. When you blow it hard, it goes the other way and is even ::: Stimmung: Bb ::: Mundrohr: Messing ::: Schallstück: 123 mm, Messing ::: Ventilstock: L brighter than a regular trumpet. This ‘breadth’ of tonal range is very appealing to me for Tune: Bb Leadpipe: Yellowbrass Bell: 4.84“, Yellowbrass Valve Section: L jazz work, as I can create a very intimate sound even without a mute and still ‘scream’ any time just by increasing the air. Die Spyder - Trompete ist ideal für Solisten und Band-Player. Ihr Klang und Projektion ist perfekt für ein Trompetenensem- Model „Spyder“Bb ble, wie Kammermusik, Jazz, kleine Gruppen und Aufnahme- sessions. Die Intonation ist sehr gut, der Ton ist warm und konsequent, sie ist so einzigartig wie die Musik. The Spyder is my primary tool for soloist and small group work. Its sound and projection is perfect for one-trumpet ensembles, like chamber music, small jazz groups, and recording sessions. The intonation is excellent, the tone is warm and consistent, and the looks are as unique as the music I hope to play on it.

THE EXOTIC RHYTHMS OF DON ELLIS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE PEABODY INSTITUTE OF THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS BY SEAN P. FENLON MAY 25, 2002 © Copyright 2002 Sean P. Fenlon All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Fenlon, Sean P. The Exotic Rhythms of Don Ellis. Diss. The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, 2002. This dissertation examines the rhythmic innovations of jazz musician and composer Don Ellis (1934-1978), both in Ellis’s theory and in his musical practice. It begins with a brief biographical overview of Ellis and his musical development. It then explores the historical development of jazz rhythms and meters, with special attention to Dave Brubeck and Stan Kenton, Ellis’s predecessors in the use of “exotic” rhythms. Three documents that Ellis wrote about his rhythmic theories are analyzed: “An Introduction to Indian Music for the Jazz Musician” (1965), The New Rhythm Book (1972), and Rhythm (c. 1973). Based on these sources a general framework is proposed that encompasses Ellis’s important concepts and innovations in rhythms. This framework is applied in a narrative analysis of “Strawberry Soup” (1971), one of Don Ellis’s most rhythmically-complex and also most-popular compositions. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to my dissertation advisor, Dr. John Spitzer, and other members of the Peabody staff that have endured my extended effort in completing this dissertation. Also, a special thanks goes out to Dr. H. Gene Griswold for his support during the early years of my music studies.

  • A Fascinating Look at Various and Bizarre Trombones. Sackbut
Various Trombones A fascinating look at various and bizarre trombones. Sackbut This is the trombone’s ancestor, the typical sliding brass from from 1400-1700. It has a tiny bell, like a trumpet. Piccolo Trombone Basically a slide trumpet with a larger bell. Soprano Trombone Slightly larger than the piccolo trombone. This video is a quick explanation on how to go about playing this unique instrument. Alto Trombone This is one size size smaller than the standard trombone – this instrument is widely used as a solo instrument and as a color instrument in trombone choirs. Alto Trombone Part 2 Here is the alto trombone played in a jazz context. Tenor Trombone Here is the standard trombone played REALLY fast! Tenor Trombone with trigger Here is a quick explanation of how the trigger functions on the standard trombone. Tenor & Bass Trombone Here’s a duet to the classic tune “Summertime” to show the difference between the tenor & bass trombone. Trombone Weirdness Trombone players are a peculiar bunch, as evidenced by this video. Bass Trombone The bass trombone is the 2nd most used trombone. It is used as a power bass instrument in many groups. Here is a basic explanation of the bass trombone. Contrabass Trombone A contrabass trombone is quite large, used mostly as a color instrument in a trombone choir, or as a specialty solo type instrument. Contrabass Trombone Here is a redesigned contrabass trombone with a wrap around double slide. The double slide is supposed to open up the sound and give the instrument more power. Tenor Trombone Here’s a standard tenor trombone with a wooden bell – weird! Pbone Here is a trombone that is made from plastic.
