Unfortunately, almost all the existing renditions fail to transfer the original clearly into the target language. They suffer from serious shortcomings that cause incomprehensibility in parts of the text. These renditions contain some elements that make the target reader struggle to understand the meaning. This research aims to contribute to overcoming the shortcomings of existing translations. It discusses the reasons why the English target reader of the Quran struggles to follow and comprehend the meaning of some of its verses, and attempts to find a workable methodology for translating the meaning of the Quran. It tries to find new methods to help tackle the weaknesses in the translations of the meaning of the Quran and provides suggestions for improving them. It is hoped this methodology will lead to producing a more accurate and comprehensible translation of the meaning of the Quran in which the meaning is transferred clearly in a natural-sounding target- language text, and that will improve comprehensibility for both Muslim and non- Muslim native speakers of English. This research also studies the role and importance of the translator in achieving a good translation, and tries to establish a set of criteria for the attributes and conditions of the translator of the Quran. IV Chapter One The Introduction 1.1 Introduction Translation has played an increasingly significant role in the exchange of knowledge and culture amongst different peoples over the past few centuries. It has also played a vital part in developing some civilizations in relation to others. Translation has recently become an even more important factor than in the past in the understanding of different cultures and reciprocating knowledge. Hundreds of thousands of books and articles are translated every year. One of the most important books that has been translated into other languages is the Holy Quran. Over the past few centuries, with their different intentions, Muslim and non-Muslim translators have been very concerned to transfer the meaning of the Quran into languages other than Arabic. English has been the most important of all these other languages. The importance of English translations has recently become greater than ever. This is because of the growing non-Arab Muslim communities in English-speaking countries, as well as greater academic interest in Islam. Moreover, the 9-11 terror attack and the continuous talk in the media about so-called Muslim terrorism, has inspired large numbers of native speakers of English to obtain and read different translations of this Book in order to understand Quranic teaching and the Muslim mentality. The point is: how accurate and comprehensible are these translations? Despite the great effort of some translators to produce reliable translations into English, those native speakers of English who have read the versions in their language have often failed to understand the real meaning due to the poor translation; the text was written in a peculiar and boring style, and its flow was impaired. They also misunderstood the content either because the meaning was not rendered accurately or was biased.

These translations proved the inimitability of the Qur'anic discourse that employs extensive and complex syntactical and rhetoric features and that linguistically the principle of absolute untranslatability applies to the Quran. Consequently, partial or complete grammatical and semantic losses are encountered in translation due to the lack of some of these features in English. These translation losses is particularly apparent in translation of verbal similarity in the Quranic verses, as an abundant phenomenon in the Quran, in the form of over-, under-, or mistranslation of a source text (ST). This study attempted to investigate these translation losses in the translation of the Holy Quran focusing on verbal similarity as an impressive way of expression and a rhetorical figure widely used in the Quran. These factors are linguistic, stylistic, and personal. The first two refer to the inimitable style of the Holy Quran and the figurative speech employed in its structure, while personal factors are related to the knowledge and ideology of the translator. I became devotedly attached to him despite never having met him in person. I found in his words such truthfulness, radiance and charisma, the scent of the fragrance of the friends of God. Since then, I eagerly longed for the life-story and words of that "unschooled beloved" and instructor of ethics at whose feet many professors from universities and Islamic seminaries had knelt in devotion, so that I might present it to the public, especially to my students who were in dire need of it at the outset of their life. In 2011 John Cavadini, the director of the Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and also the chair of the ‘World Religions and Spiritualties’ Council of the Fetzer Institute, proposed a conference on ‘Practical Holiness’ at Notre Dame and asked me to introduce a contemporary exemplar of love and forgiveness in Iran. He never got over those images from his mind. My other uncle got caught up in the siege of Caen. The Germans sent the Hitler youth into battle -14 year old children with guns.

However, whereas the idea of interpreting the Quran has not been so conventional, the emotional motives behind rendering the Quranic text into languages other than Arabic has always been looked upon with suspicion. This is obvious as the need for translating the Quran arose in those historic circumstances when a large number of non-Arabic speaking people had embraced Islam, and giving new linguistic orientations to the contents of the revelation-as, for instance, happened in the case of the ‘New Testament’-could have led to unforeseeable, and undesirable, developments within the body of the Islamic region itself.     Jesus, son of Mary (part 1 of 5): Muslims Love Jesus too! Christians often talk about developing a relationship with Christ and accepting him into their lives. They assert that Jesus is much more than a man and died on the cross to free mankind from the original sin. Christians speak of Jesus with love and respect, and it is obvious he holds a special place in their lives and hearts. But what about Muslims; what do they think about Jesus and what place does Jesus Christ hold in Islam? Someone unfamiliar with Islam may be surprised to learn that Muslims love Jesus too. A Muslim will not speak the name of Jesus without respectfully adding the words “may peace be upon him”. In Islam, Jesus is a loved and esteemed man, a Prophet and Messenger calling his people to the worship of the One True God. Muslims and Christians share some very similar beliefs about Jesus. Both believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary and both believe that Jesus was the Messiah sent to the people of Israel. Both also believe that Jesus will return to earth in the last days. However in one major detail they are worlds apart. Muslims believe with certainty that Jesus is not God, he is not the son of God and he is not part of a Trinity of God. In the Quran, God spoke directly to Christians when He said: “O people of the Scripture! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of God aught but the truth.
