He was an elegant, profound, effective and sought- after preacher. When Italy went to war in1915, he was drafted as a sergeant in the medical corps and became a chaplain to wounded soldiers. In 1921, he was called to the Holy See, to be the President of Society of the Propagation of Faith. He served as the Pope's envoy in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and France. In January 1953, he was created a Cardinal and appointed as the Patriarch of Venice. At the death of Pope Pius XII, he was elected Pope at the age of 77, taking the name John XXIII. His pontificate lasted for less than five years. He was meek and gentle, enterprising and courageous, simple and active. John XXII soon announced his intention of convoking the 21st Ecumenical Blessed council, to renew life in the Church, to reform its structures and institutions, and to explore ways and means of promoting Christian unity. KARUNYA TRUST Karunya Trust celebrated International “Women’s Day on 15th March at Central Railway Institute Kalyan (E). 500 rural women participated in Event. Mar Thomas Elavanal presided over the meeting. He emphasised on the Theme that “Equality of Women, Progress for all”. Ms. Janet D’souza, Vice Chairperson of State Minority Commission exhorted women to unite and stand for women’s right. Ms. Shila Borade, Sabhpathi, Ambernath, Mr. R. K Bhamane, Project Director, D.R.D.A, Thane, Mr. M. V Ashok, Chief General Manager, NABARD were the dignitaries at the occasion. Karunya Trust’s Best Organic farmer’s Award was presented to Mr. Gurunath Dattatray Sambare. The event was organized under the leadershop of Rev. "The walking pilgrimage will commence from the Mother of Victory Church, Tikujiniwadi at 8:00 p.m. on 11th April, 2014 with adoration followed by dinner and onwards with the journey which will then conclude with the solemn high mass by His Excellency Mar Thomas Elavanal on the morning of 12th April, 2014 at St.Thomas Cathedral, Kalyan. Vocation Discernment Retreat Jesus' Nurses' Fraternity (JNF) Annual Day Celibration was held on March 2nd Sunday at St. Teresa School Girgoan. The event started with Holy Qurbana followed by public meeting and cultural programme. Bishop Mar Thomas Elavanal was the main celebrant and president of the meeting. Mrs. Rony Baby and Ms. Hony Thomas were honored in the meeting. Around 350 JNF members were present.
