As more homework assignments require web access, having the digital tools at home is important in preventing students from falling behind their peers. “Technology is such an integrated part of our society, that students who do not have access can be at a disadvantage academically, socially, and financially,” said Debora Gavin Merlock, President at the Harford County Education Foundation. “We are incredibly honored to partner with our sponsors and increase the technological impact we have on our students.” Harford County Education Foundation works with the local community to bring critical resources to help students succeed in their academic and pe rsonal goals through middle and high school leadership programs, college and career mentoring, scholarships, free schools supplies for low-income students, and grants. Through Harford County Education Foundation’s Tech Tools initiative, the 32% of Harford County Public School students who reside in low-income households will have improved access to quality learning experiences. Six Suggestions for Giving Summer Slide the Slip Paula M. Stanton, Ph.D.

At this time of year, parents and students begin taking a forward look at their summer plans. These plans often include vacations, summer camp, summer jobs, and family fun, but it is also important that students maintain a routine that avoids the dreaded summer slide. While there is no magical solution to eliminating loss of learning during the summer, here are a few suggestions to keep your students on track and help them to prepare for the upcoming school year as they enjoy their summer break:

1. Join the Harford County Public Library Summer Reading Program. Your students can earn prizes and help their school compete for the coveted reading trophy. While reading at least three books this summer, they can critique them and make recommendations to a family member or friend. Remind them to turn in their forms to compete with other schools! 2. Plan learning experiences. Visit a museum, travel to a new city, or go to a sporting event. Encourage your students to help with the planning by researching places to visit, checking out restaurants, and creating an itinerary. If they are old enough, provide a budget and allow them to help find deals on excursions, hotels, food, flights, etc. They’ll be reading, doing math, and conducting research without even knowing it! 3. Volunteer. Students can select an organization and call or write to them about volunteering. Potential places include churches, animal shelters, hospitals, homeless shelters, or community businesses. This will help build research skills as well as speaking and listening skills. 4. Journal. Students can document the summer by journaling or keeping a scrap book. For example, on Day 1, students can write a journal entry about the first day of summer using as many vivid adjectives as possible or by creating tongue twisters (alliterative words and phrases). At the end of the summer, encourage them to share a few entries with the family. What a way to build up those writing skills AND presentation skills! 5. Stay active. Carve out time each day for activities such as walking, running, bicycling, sports, or swimming. Students can add these activities to their journals. 6. Learn/teach a new skill. Here’s one idea: Students can go to the public library and check out a sign language book or enroll in a sign language class. Allow them to teach you or a family member a few new words each week of the summer. They can also assess/grade you on your perform- ance and add this experience to their summer journal. Teaching and learning is a winning combination! With these tips and many more, we can help avoid learning loss and save the summer slide for the amusement parks, pools, playgrounds, and baseball diamonds.

Enjoy the summer!
