religions Article Islam¯ and Genesis 17: A Study in Scriptural Intertextuality Khaleel Mohammed Department of Religious Studies, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-6062, USA; [email protected] Received: 25 August 2018; Accepted: 17 September 2018; Published: 28 September 2018 Abstract: Abraham Geiger’s 1833 essay launched a particular genre of research that posits foreign etymology for many terms in the Qur’an.¯ Whereas some work has been erudite, others have posited far-fetched concepts to the point where at least one author opines that Aramaic was the original language of the Qur’an.¯ Muslim exegetes have compounded the problem by seeking to interpret the Qur’an¯ on its own, without reference to other Abrahamic scriptures. I argue that Muhammad’s audience understood him clearly since he was using terms that had become part of the Arabic language long before his time. I examine three terms: islam,¯ iman,¯ and d¯ın, showing that the meaning of these words in the Qur’an¯ can be deciphered by reliance on context of usage and intertextuality. To this end, I refer to several verses of the Qur’an¯ as well as of the Hebrew Bible and Talmudic literature. A proper understanding of these words allows us to see Q3:19 and Q5:3 as pluralistic instead of the particularistic interpretation that most exegetes proffer. Keywords: Islam; Iman; Din; Qur’an;¯ Aramaic; Hebrew; Hebrew Bible; Talmud; Onkelos Abraham Geiger’s 1833 essay Was hat Muhammad aus dem Judenthume aufgenommen postulated that the Qur’an¯ was largely unoriginal: Muhammad had compiled it using at least 14 terms from the Hebrew Bible and rabbinic literature, in addition to several other Jewish concepts (Geiger 1970, p.

Ghana Journal of Linguistics 9.1: 72-96 (2020) ______________________________________________________________________________ http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/gjl.v9i1.4 EDITORIAL BOOK CRITIQUE: THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD AMEN: ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE THE BIBLE HAS NEVER TOLD Ọbádélé Bakari Kambon Editor-in-Chief Abstract: The Origin of the Word Amen: Ancient Knowledge the Bible has Never Told is a book that promises to pique the interest of any reader interested in classical Kmt ‘Black Nation/Land of the Blacks’, mdw nTr ‘Hieroglyphs,’ the Akan language, and historical-linguistic connections between the three. Specifically, the book promises to deliver information about how the word imn ‘Amen,’ as attested in classical Kmt ‘Black Nation/Land of the Blacks,’ persists in the contemporary Akan language. While under a steady hand this should be a simple enough thesis to substantiate, unfortunately, the authors’ obvious lack of grounding in historical linguistics, their lack of knowledge of mdw nTr ‘Hieroglyphs’ as well as their lack of understanding the morphology (word structure) of the Akan language all mar the analyses presented in the book. Keywords: Amen, Heru Narmer, historical linguistics, folk etymology Osei, O. K., Issa, J., & Faraji, S. (2020). The Origin of the Word Amen: Ancient Knowledge the Bible has Never Told. Long Beach, CA: Amen-Ra Theological Seminary Press. 1. Introduction In The Origin of the Word Amen: Ancient Knowledge the Bible has Never Told, what should be an open-and-shut case is saddled with a plethora of spurious look-alikes and folk etymologies prompted by attempts to analyze one language with another without actually having studying the language to be analyzed itself.

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

It involves the examination of Gnostic documents and secondary scholarly sources on Gnosticism, and the detailed analysis of primary source written texts presented at the seventeen designated online contemporary Christian faith communities. The two chapters immediately following the introduction examine the important foundational and specific issues relevant to a study of Christian Gnosticism of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. They serve not as a detailed study of these forms of Gnosticism, but rather as a distillation of its principal characteristics.

AN EMAIL FROM JESUS REVELATION 3:14-22 Midweek Instruction Reid temple ame church Pastor Washington REVELATION 3:14-22 ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN MODERATE? • When it comes to politics most people are classified as conservative or liberal or libertarian but few are considered moderate. • In the KJV Philippians 4:5 says, “let your moderation be known to all men.” this means to live with a gentle spirit and be considerate of others. • Don’t always demand your way. This is the sort of moderation we should all desire, but there is a kind of moderate Christian that is not so good THE MODERATE CHRISTIAN • The moderate Christian has a MODERate Christ who makes moderate demands. He keeps Jesus at arm’s length lest the religion thing gets out of hand. • Wealthy people are especially susceptible to becoming “moderate” Christians and that is exactly what happened at a place called Laodicea. • Of the seven churches, none receives a more scathing condemnation than Laodicea. COMFORTABLE CHRISTIANITY • The people who worshiped at Laodicea considered themselves happy and blessed. They lived in a town others envied. The church drew members from wealthy families in Laodicea. • Laodicea was comfortable place to live and a comfortable place to go to church. That combination made Jesus sick to his stomach. • Outwardly the church in Laodicea appeared to be strong and prosperous but let’s look at Jesus email to the congregation. JESUS IDENTITY - V14 JESUS THE CHRIST @ HEAVEN.COM • These are the words of the amen, the faithful and true witness. • Amen is usually the final word of a prayer.

  • “Amen”? Affirming the Contemporary Ghanaian Usage of Amen
Agana: Affirming the Contemporary Ghanaian Usage of Amen Agana-Nsiire Agana Can I Get an “Amen”? Affirming the Contemporary Ghanaian Usage of Amen Introduction The word amen needs no introduction. It is a gem of ancient history that has not only survived the test of time, but has also proliferated across the cultural spectrum of humanity through the spread of Christianity and to a lesser extent among the followers of Islam. In the Christian context, while its most frequent usage is as a final word in Christian prayer, amen is also often used as an interjection to communicate affirmation, approval, or agreement in a general way. As such it performs both liturgical and com- municative functions. For example, liturgically, it is sung as a conclusion to pastoral prayers. Communicatively, it is said after a choir has ministered through song, or at certain points during a sermon when people wish to express a strong sense of agreement with what has been or is being said. Some Adventist commentators have recently called into question the appropriateness of many instances of the second class of usage. For them, amen is often used in ways that are contrary to its meaning and proper function. Many also feel that its frequent repetition robs it of the meaning sustained by active thinking, leading to mindless and therefore meaningless repetition. The claim is also made that such indiscriminate usage of amen is traceable to indigenous Ghanaian religions and its libational culture. This study seeks to carefully look at the claim that certain uses of amen in Christian communicative context are inappropriate, to show how the term is used in these instances is largely in conformity with its original meaning and biblical usage, and that the contemporary application reflects valid contextual interpretations of that meaning that are by no means restricted to Ghanaian thinking.

Gershon, or Gersonides) glossed this verse (2Kgs הנה כמו שהתלמידים נקראים בנים, כמו בני הנביאים, כן הרב יקרא אב :as follows (2:12 Just as disciples are considered as children, as in the“ ,כי הוא המוליד שכל התלמיד expression ‘children of the prophets,’ so too is a rabbi called father, because he gives birth to the student’s wisdom.” From the day I met Rabbi Roth and through to the very day of this writing, he has been a father to me, and whatever wis- dom there may be in this teshuvah reflects but a small portion of what he has helped me to develop. I am forever grateful. Sheilah The practice is widespread that during the Shaḥarit service that the shali’aḥ tzibbur becomes silent during the berakhah “ga’al yisrael,” just before the begin- ning of the Shaḥarit Amidah. This is presumably for the purpose of avoiding a break between the blessing and the beginning of the Amidah.2 However, this custom appears contrary to the whole purpose of having a shali’aḥ tzibbur in 1 This teshuvah was approved by the Rabbinical Assembly’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards on October 31, 2001. • Angelic Creators of Mankind Amen Teeth
Angelic Creators Of Mankind Amen Teeth http://users.yumaed.org/~jparker/angelology_angels_demons_chart.htm Amen 1 Amen This article is about the interjection. For other uses, see Amen (disambiguation). ʾāmīn ,ﺁﻣﻴﻦ :Modern amen Tiberian ʾāmēn; Greek: ἀμήν; Arabic ,אָמֵן :The word amen (/ˌɑːˈmɛn/ or /ˌeɪˈmɛn/; Hebrew ; "So be it; truly") is a declaration of affirmation found in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Its use in Judaism dates back to its earliest texts.[1] It has been generally adopted in Christian worship as a concluding word for prayers and hymns. In Islam, it is the standard ending to Dua (supplication). Common English translations of the word amen include "verily" and "truly". It can also be used colloquially to express strong agreement, as in, for instance, amen to that.[2] Pronunciation In English, the word amen has two primary pronunciations, ah-men (/ɑːˈmɛn/) or ay-men (/eɪˈmɛn/), with minor additional variation in emphasis (the two syllables may be equally stressed instead of placing primary stress on the second). The Oxford English Dictionary gives "eɪ'mεn, often ɑː'mɛn". The ah-men pronunciation is used in performances of classical music, in churches with more formalized rituals and liturgy and in liberal to mainline Protestant denominations, as well as almost every Jewish congregation, in line with modern Hebrew pronunciation. The ay-men pronunciation, a product of the Great Vowel Shift dating to the 15th century, is associated with Irish Protestantism and conservative Evangelical denominations generally, and is the pronunciation typically used in gospel music. In Islam the pronunciation ah-meen (ʾĀmīn) is used upon completing a supplication to God or when concluding recitation of the first surah Al Fatiha in prayer.
