E-mail: [email protected] The frequency and speed of the transport of goods and passengers have been on the increase for decades, involving a higher rate of introductions of animals and plants to new regions that they were not able to colonise unassisted. In particular, a large number of Hymenoptera have become introduced, either deliberately (for crop pollination purposes or pest control) or unintentionally. No global data are available, but a few regional examples may outline the size of the problem: 286 hymenopteran species are known to have been introduced into Europe (Rasplus et al. 2010), 148 into New Zealand (Landcare Research 2009), 35 into the Galápagos Islands (Causton et al. 2006) and 28 into the Canary Islands (Báez & Oromí 2010). The introduction of vespids has become relatively common worldwide: 33 species are known as introduced, with Hawaii (15 species) and North America (8) as the main host regions (Beggs et al. -

Cuckoo wasps (Chrysididae) are a medium-sized and widespread family of Hymenoptera whose species are generally para- sitoids or cleptoparasites of solitary wasps and bees. The identities of the hosts are known from various studies and occasional records; however the utility of such data is often low due to unstable taxonomy of the species and the inappropriate methods used to determine the host species. Therefore, despite numerous publications on the subject, the host-parasite relationships of cuckoo wasps are poorly understood. Moreover, a revision of existing literature reveals that cuckoo wasps are often unreasonably considered to be unspecialized (i.e., sharing host species). In this study we use an accurate method (trap-nests) to determine the host relationships of Estonian cuckoo wasps of the genera Chrysis and Trichrysis and determine their level of specialization. 568 trap nest bundles (each containing 15–20 single reed stems) were established at 361 locations across Estonia during the vegetation periods of 2009–2011. -

The ground plan states of 43 character systems are discussed, and the first comprehensive cladogram for any significant portion of the subfamily is presented. At least eight of the 26 genera are apparently nonmonophyletic: Zethus, Montezumia, Euodynerus, Odynerus, Pterocheilus, Stenodynerus, Leptochilus and Microdynerus. However, a functional link between metal enrichment and ecological pressures (i.e., adapta- tion) has been only rarely shown, opening the possibility that in some lineages, the evolutionary history may account for most of the observed variation (i.e., phylogenetic constraint). Here, we addressed this question in the hyper-diverse Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants, and sawflies), in which Zn and/or Mn have been found enriching the mandibles of a number of species. Across 87 species spanning most of the extant superfamilies, we found Zn enrichment to be widespread (57 species). Although lacking in the most primitive “Symphyta”, our ancestral state reconstruction was not conclusive in determining whether Zn enrichment was a derived state for the complete order, but it was clearly the ancestral state for the Apocrita, where it was lost in few lineages, notably in Aculeata (where it was then reacquired at least three times). Mn, on the other hand, occurred very rarely in mandibles (10 species). Our comparative analysis revealed a strong phylogenetic effect explaining most Zn % and Mn % variation in mandibles. -

Your editor has been inundated with administrative matters and time has simply slipped by. Highlights of this issue involve news about people, some scientific notes, a few obituaries, some trip reports and of course the usual recent literature coverage which includes another of Robin Edwards 1 special vespoid sections. I want to take this opportunity to thank Helen Proctor for typing most of this newsletter for me. Thanks also go to LUdnri:l"a Kassianoff for translating some Russian titles into English, and to Yiau Min Huang for translating some Chinese titles into English. Judging by the comments received, the readership of Sphecos 4 enjoyed Eric Grissell's "profile" (p. 9) more than anything else in the issue. Congratulations Eric! Sphecos is gaining considerable recogn1t1on via reviews in journals. The most recent and most extensive being published in "Soviet Bibliography" for 1980, issue #6. The nearly 2 page lauditory review by I. Evgen'ev concludes with the statement "Sphecos [is] a highly useful publication for people around the world who study wasp biology and systematics" [Woj Pulawski generously translated the entire review for me into English]. Currently Sphecos is mailed to about 350 waspologists around the world. This figure includes a few libraries such as those at the BMNH, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad, the Albany Museum, Grahamstown, and the Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging, Amsterdam to list a sample. -

Chilcutt ,2 and David P. Cowan ABSTRACT Solitary eumenid wasps of the genera Ancistrocerus and Euodynerus can be reared in small cages. Laboratory-reared larvae of the spruce budworm caterpillars, Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Torlricidae) are suitable prey. Many problems in insect biology are difficult or impossible to study in a completely natural setting, thus making artificial rearing methods necessary for further advances. Generally, it is necessary to provide adults with condi tions needed for maintenance, an appropriate environment for males and females to mate, proper oviposition stimuli for females, and an adequate diet for immature stages. -

Voici les deuxième et troisième parties. La deuxième partie présente la liste de tous les articles relatifs aux hyménoptères de Belgique, la plupart du temps écrits par des auteurs belges, classés par auteurs et par dates de publication (plus de 1300 références). La troisième partie indique quels sont les travaux les plus récents qui permettent de cataloguer ou identifier les espèces. Ces travaux sont classés par groupes systématiques ou par sujets. Ils proviennent aussi bien de la littérature étrangère que de la littérature belge (plus de 600 références). Sharanowski i ABSTRACT A dominating and widespread view is that evolutionary change is gradual and waits upon mutation. Likewise, it is thought that workers and queens of eusocial insects diverged gradually and stepwise. That is, rudimentary castes preceded advanced castes. This paradigm hinges on eusociality having evolved once in Vespidae, and primitively eusocial paper wasps lacking ontogenetic caste biasing (differentiation of castes during larval development). Using a phylogenomic approach this study shows strong evidence for two origins of eusociality in vespid wasps, wherein one origin is likely characterized by the sudden appearance of castes with physiological, and perhaps even morphological, differences established before adulthood (i.e.
