  • Clyde Mcphatter 1987.Pdf
Clyde McPhatter was among thefirst | singers to rhapsodize about romance in gospel’s emotionally charged style. It wasn’t an easy stepfor McP hatter to make; after all, he was only eighteen, a 2m inister’s son born in North Carolina and raised in New Jersey, when vocal arranger and talent manager Billy | Ward decided in 1950 that I McPhatter would be the perfect choice to front his latest concept, a vocal quartet called the Dominoes. At the time, quartets (which, despite the name, often contained more than four members) were popular on the gospel circuit. They also dominated the R&B field, the most popular being decorous ensembles like the Ink Spots and the Orioles. Ward wanted to combine the vocal flamboyance of gospel with the pop orientation o f the R&B quartets. The result was rhythm and gospel, a sound that never really made it across the R &B chart to the mainstream audience o f the time but reached everybody’s ears years later in the form of Sixties soul. As Charlie Gillett wrote in The Sound of the City, the Dominoes began working instinctively - and timidly. McPhatter said, ' ‘We were very frightened in the studio when we were recording. Billy Ward was teaching us the song, and he’d say, ‘Sing it up,’ and I said, 'Well, I don’t feel it that way, ’ and he said, ‘Try it your way. ’ I felt more relaxed if I wasn’t confined to the melody. I would take liberties with it and he’d say, ‘That’s great.

  • Was Composed in 1934 by Harry Warren and Al Dubin. It Has Been Recorded by Numerous Musicians, Including Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Art Garfunkel, and Michael Bublè
Rev. Dan Welch Midweek of Lent 1 3-4-20 Text: Isaiah 43:1-7 The song “I Only Have Eyes for You” was composed in 1934 by Harry Warren and Al Dubin. It has been recorded by numerous musicians, including Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Art Garfunkel, and Michael Bublè. Rolling Stone ranks the Flamingo’s version of the song #157 in their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. “I Only Have Eyes for You.” The Lord has His own version of this golden oldie: “you are valuable in My eyes.” The you in our text is singular, not plural. It’s you not you all. Singular you denotes a focus that is individual and intimate, particular and personal. The same specific concern for you comes in Isaiah 43:1 where God says, “I have called you by name, you are Mine.” God cares about everyone and everything, that’s for sure, but to emphasize the value God places on you, He uses twenty-five second person word forms in our text. Over and over again it is you, you, you . you! “You are valuable in My eyes.” Those who first received these words were far away from home. These Israelites were in Babylon, and Babylon said, “You are nothing in my eyes.” Babylon was distant, aloof, cold, and calculating. It called Judean exiles state slaves and prisoners, cogs in their vast and ever-growing political machine. So the question of the day is: Where do I find my value? To get at this, try to picture it this way: Have you ever stood in front of fun house mirrors at a fair or amusement park? I remember being at one when I was young, I remember how some mirrors would make me look tall and skinny.

Isaiah 43:1-7 Fear But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. 4 Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. 5 Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. 6 I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."
