Our President’s Council includes current and alumni presidents of universities such as NYU, Oxford, Vassar, and UC Berkeley. 92% of UoPeople graduates are employed and work for organizations such as Amazon, Apple, IBM, Microsoft, the UN and the World Bank. The University is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), which is listed by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a recognized accrediting agency. ACCESSIBILITY UoPeople is dedicated to opening the gates of higher education to every qualified high school graduate. UoPeople’s comprehensive learning platform can be reached via internet connection from anywhere in the world. All learning materials and textbooks are carefully selected by instructors and course designers and are accessible through Open Educational Resources, meaning that students are not required to purchase costly textbooks. AFFORDABILITY Enrollment at University of the People requires minimal costs for our students. Students are asked to pay only a $100 assessment fee at the end of each course ($200 for the Master’s level programs). With these contributions, the University is completely financially sustainable. If these modest fees are prohibitive, however, the University provides scholarships, donated by individuals, organizations, and foundations, such as Microsoft, HP, and the Oak Foundation, to ensure that no qualified students are left behind for financial reasons. education hrevolution pilar f h University of the People is the Education Revolution, demonstrating that higher education can be accessible and affordable, without compromising quality. 13 uopeople 2009 milestones Opened the UoPeople Gates to Students Worldwide. e2012educationducation2013 Received First Major Grant Presented UoPeople to (from Bill & Melinda Gates the Obama National Foundation). Diamond Resubmitted to the Senate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem March 2021 This work was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Elyakim Kislev ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Of the many people to whom I am grateful, my first and most earnest thanks go to my supervisor, Dr. Elyakim Kislev. His unparalleled generosity, patience, and kindness over the last five years made the completion of this thesis not only possible, but also pleasant and enjoyable. Elyakim encouraged me to continue when the research and writing became challenging, and his criticisms of my work – always sensitive and constructive – pushed me to do and be my very best. Elyakim continues to inspire me with his ambition, intellectual curiosity, and benevolence. I am both privileged and honoured to have been his first PhD student, and I enthusiastically anticipate continuing our research collaboration in the (nearly) immediate future. Very special thanks also go to Prof. Michal Frenkel and Dr. Limor Samimian-Darash, who served as my committee members, for their time, availability, and investment in ensuring that my PhD research could be completed successfully. I am particularly grateful for Dr. Samimian- Darash’s advice on the planning of my ethnographic research, which resulted in the publication of the fourth chapter of this thesis, and to Prof.

The Palestinian Internship Program (PIP) provides fresh Palestinian graduates with paid internship opportunities at leading multinational and Israeli tech and finance companies in Israel. As of the end of 2019, PIP has arranged internships for 67 young professionals at 43 companies including Google, Intel, Thomson Reuters, and HP Indigo, as well as with many start-ups and venture capital firms. PIP Internships help young Palestinians develop their technical and professional skills in a real-work setting; to offer a platform for graduates to jumpstart their careers in high-tech; and ultimately, to help create leaders and stimulate the growth of the Palestinian high tech sector. PIP’s main focuses are on youth and female empowerment, leadership, economic development, and economic cooperation. Palestine boasts very high literacy rates and over a dozen universities, from which some 2,500 students graduate each year in IT-related fields. 55% However, more than half of Palestinian graduates are either unemployed or settle for low-skilled positions outside their fields of expertise.
