2 | UNITED HATZALAH | 2017 YEAR IN REVIEW FROM THE PRESIDENT 2018 I’m excited to share with you a re-cap of 2018, a year which brought United Hatzalah great deal of growth and international recognition.

In November, the Arab-Israeli video blogger Nuseir Yassin, known as NAS Daily, featured United Hatzalah on his page. The video he produced, which explains United Hatzalah’s history and model, has now Cases treated since 2006 been seen on Facebook more that 44 million times, making it one of his most popular videos to date. Along with the video came international recognition, with emails, phone calls, and letters pouring in from around the Emergency calls answered per year world from people looking to replicate the model in their communities, as far away as and Ghana. CPR trainings in the community The most important program that we developed in 2018 was our Day of Lifesaving campaign which allows people to sponsor all life-saving calls on a specific day in honor or in memory of someone or a special day. It is the most important program for United Hatzalah because it supports the actual cost of running the Volunteer medics organization and responding to over 1,000 calls daily. Getting every day of the year sponsored by someone will allow us to make the organization sustainable.

The renovation of our headquarters in Jerusalem is now progressing to the second stage, building out our simulation center Defibrillators deployed and training facilities which will help us to deliver top training to our volunteers. Our building plaque program, which has various sponsorship opportunities available, is also underway. These building plaques allow our supporters to add their name to our headquarters and provide us the funds to help the continued renovation of the building, so that it can become Calls per day a true National Headquarters of lifesaving.

I dedicated 2018 to something very dear and close to my heart, my campaign to equip as many United Hatzalah medics Ambucycles in United Hatzalah’s fleet as possible with defibrillators. Sadly, my brother in law passed away in Bnei Brak at the age of 61 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Volunteers had arrived on scene, but they did not have a defibrillator which could have saved his life. Thanks to our incredible supporters we raised funds to purchase 2,000 new defibrillators, which will help us save many more lives.

Seconds average response time in Jerusalem This year we saw the inaugural year of Camp Hatzalah Rescue, a partnership with NCSY to bring teens to for a summer program where they learn to be United Hatzalah medics. This program is helping provide an amazing experience for young high school students, and gives them an opportunity to make a true impact by teaching them how to save lives. Cities worldwide using United Hatzalah’s mode United Hatzalah looks to accomplish even more in the year ahead. We hope to purchase additional in order to provide free care and hospital transit. Many Israelis can’t afford ambulatory assistance as almost every emergency Minutes average response time nationwide service in Israel charges patients. This causes those patients, who are unable to afford to call an ambulance, to hesitate to call for help. We seek to fill this gap by providing free ambulatory care, as no one should be scared to call for help in times of an emergency.

We are also expanding our events internationally, so that we can introduce more people to United Hatzalah around the world. Our most important goal, though, is to grow our number of volunteers from 5,000 to 6,000. Not only can we reach more people with 1,000 extra volunteers, but this will also help us reduce our response time so we can save lives even faster.

Thank you so much for allowing me to make this all a reality, I’m so happy I could partner with you in lifesaving. Eli Beer, President

UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW | 5 OUR Programs 2018 Family First Program

As a community - based organization, it is of upmost importance to United Hatzalah to make sure that every member of the community has access to medical care when they need it most. Therefore, United Hatzalah launched the Family First Training Program, which teaches members of the public, including teachers and parents, basic CPR. United Hatzalah is proud to be partners with communities, businesses, and schools across Israel.

6 | UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW Ten Kavod Program United Hatzalah’s Ten Kavod program provides Israel’s Holocaust survivors with proactive well-visits, communication with critical medical personnel, safety - related home improvements, and vital emotional support. Looking forward, our goal is to expand to even more cities across the country so that we can provide for as many Holocaust survivors and elderly peoples as possible.”

“This program adds an incredible amount of meaning to the lives of the elderly. They wait all week for the day to come that their volunteer will come and visit with them and talk with them.” -Liat Mizrachi, Ten Kavod Coordinator

Hospital Liaison Program United Hatzalah’s Hospital Liaison Program matches our volunteer EMTs and paramedics with understaffed emergency rooms in Israel. The program has been highly effective in significantly cutting down ER wait times. Today, the Hospital Liaison Program operates in eleven Israeli hospitals.

UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW | 7 Psychotrauma Crisis and Response Unit United Hatzalah’s Psychotrauma Unit is the first ever emergency therapy rapid response unit in the world. The unit’s mission is to give psychological first aid on site, together with medical treatment. By stabilizing the victims of shock, distress, and mental trauma at the emergency scene, they reduce the chances of PTSD and allow the EMTs at the scene to work as quickly and effectively as possible. While other psychotrauma organizations and government agencies begin treatment hours, or even days, after an incident, United Hatzalah’s Psychotrauma Unit arrives in just minutes.

Psychotrauma K9 Unit United Hatzalah launched its Psychotrauma K-9 Unit, designed to assist these responders in more effectively treating psychotramatic shock. The use of a therapy dog provides a non-threatening way to engage with those in a vulnerable state. Petting a soothing animal gives the victim back a feeling of control and safety, allowing the Psychotrauma volunteer to better connect with the victim.

8 | UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW Women and Midwives Division Launched by Gitty Beer, the wife of United Hatzalah’s founder, the Women’s Division gives Ultra-Orthodox women a chance to volunteer in their communities across Israel, such as Ramat Beit Shemesh, Illit, and Bnei Brak. It fills the need of more female medics in these communities who can step in at times where religious women in distress may prefer to be served by a female medic. Within the Women’s Division is the Midwives Unit, whose sole purpose is to provide experienced care to birthing mothers who are unable to reach the hospital in time. The unit consists of highly trained midwives and OB-GYN nurses across the country who specifically respond to homebirth calls.

“In the religious community, with births or, G-d forbid, miscarriages, it’s preferable to have a woman rather than a man. When you’re giving birth, you don’t want a guy sitting there. Maybe in the exact moment of treatment the woman doesn’t care, but the second before and after it’s not comfortable being around a man when one is so vulnerable.” -Gitty Beer, Founder of the Women’s Division

UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW | 9 3.25.18 Commemorating the Parkland Victims

On March 25th, 2018, the Jewish community came together to commemorate the 17 victims who died in the Parkland massacre. Community members of Palm Beach Synagogue in Palm Beach Florida, raised the money to donate the nine ambucycles in an effort to leave a legacy of lifesaving for the children and teachers killed in the horrific attack. Linda Schulman, whose son, Scott Beigel, was a victim of the massacre spoke of her son at the event, saying “My son didn’t care about himself, he cared about his kids and about saving them. That’s the way he lives, and unfortunately, that’s the way he died. We can’t get him back, but we can make sure that he didn’t die in vain.”

10 | UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW “The Jewish response to tragedy is to beautify and sanctify life. That is the lesson, which all of the congregants who participated in the donation of the ambucycles understood very clearly, and one which we as Jews need to share with the world.” - Moshe Schneiner, Rabbi of the Palm Beach Synagogue

Dear Katz Family, Your ambucycle continues its amazing work with its rider, Eli. As an active and dedicated medic, Eli is well known in his community as the person to turn to in times of medical need. Last , a family in Bnai Brak were having their Shabbat meal when they were startled to hear crashing sounds, followed by a sickening thud. The alarmed family rushed through their sliding door and were horrified to discover their neighbor from the sixth floor lying on their porch! He was conscious but bleeding and injured, having apparently attempted suicide. The family lived in the next building to Eli’s and knew that he was a United Hatzalah volunteer. A family member immediately rushed out and ran over to Eli’s home. Eli and his family were in the middle of having their Shabbat meal when they were interrupted by the urgent knocking. Suspecting a medical emergency, Eli quickly opened the door. The neighbour agitatedly alerted Eli to the incident and the United Hatzalah volunteer immediately sprinted outside, dashed to your ambucycle, grabbed his medic bag and sped to the home. The 25 year old man had jumped from the sixth floor, but the otherwise fatal fall had been mitigated by overhanging rooftops and porches. Eli unpacked his medic bag as he worked rapidly stemming bleeding, applying trauma bandages and immobilizing the injured man. Additional United Hatzalah medics arrived, followed 10 minutes later by the ambulance crew. Within a short time, the victim had been stabilized and was on his way to the hospital for both physical and psychological care. Eli is able to do the incredible work he does thanks to the gift of your ambucycle. We thank you for partnering with United Hatzalah and making such a meaningful difference to so many people!

UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW | 19 Sample Adopt a Medic update

Dear Raymond, Raphael continues his lifesaving missions with your ambucycle! In one recent incident, a 74 year old woman was at home eating dinner with her husband when she choked on a piece of steak. The offending food completely blocked her airway, and her panicked husband quickly called for emergency services. Upon receiving the urgent alert, Raphael immediately flew to the scene, the first responder on site. The husband had left the door open, and Raphael ran inside the apartment to the where the woman was lying on the floor, pulse less. He initiated CPR, the powerful chest compressions keeping vital oxygenated blood flowing to the woman’s brain and heart muscle. A minute later an additional United Hatzalah ambucycle medic arrived to join the battle. The second EMT provided assisted ventilations which Raphael continued the compressions. The duo worked feverishly to save the woman, as her husband stood by, quietly whispering prayers for her recovery. Some minutes later, the crew of a mobile intensive care ambulance arrived. After 25 more minutes of CPR, the team of medics successfully returned a viable pulse, and then quickly loaded the woman into the ambulance for rapid transport to the nearest cath lab. As the husband climbed into the vehicle to accompany his wife, he tearfully thanked the United Hatzalah responders profusely for saving his wife. Those thanks are extended to you, for providing Raphael with the means to deliver emergency medical first response in the swiftest possible manner. UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW | 20 MEET A MEDIC

Meet Miri Shvimmer and Lior Eskenasy, an engaged couple who both live in Holon and are both United Hatzalah volunteer responders. In fact, they often ride to emergencies together on Lior’s ambucycle. “Whenever there are calls that need ALS we go out together,” Miri said as she smiled. “I keep the ALS equipment from my bag in his ambucycle, so that wherever we go we have a full complement of medical supplies with us.” Going out to calls with a life partner gives us a sense of completion. We work together in creating a relationship and we build on that together when we save lives as a unit. If we go out on a really hard call, such as saving a child who was hit by a car or a family that was caught in a fire, we share it together and I go to emergencies on my own when Miri is we can have each other’s backs at the busy or is not around. 22 | UNITED HATZALAH | 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW Camp Hatzalah Rescue 2018 In partnership with NCSY, United Hatzalah launched Camp Hatzalah Rescue. This is a new camp which gives high schoolers the opportunity to train as certified medical responders. The 22 participants, working in pairs, rode three six - hour shifts on UH ambulances, along with experienced drivers and emergency medical technicians. They also took part in a field demonstration by the UH Search - and - Rescue Unit — complete with rappelling and ATVing — and went out on Lake Kinneret — the Sea of Galilee — in a UH patrol boat, ready to assist swimmers in distress.

It was a new way to instill a love of Israel. These kids really feel part of the United Hatzalah family and I hope they’ll volunteer when they come back here for their gap year after high school.
