HOUSING — Off-Campus Living

Off-Campus Housing Based on past dental student classes, we have found that many students choose to live off‐ campus. If you decide to live off‐campus, we recommend that you research the neighborhood in which you are interested in. Chicago is a big city with many diverse neighborhoods; this helpful website will assist you in exploring the many diverse neighborhoods. hp://www.dreamtown.com/neighborhoods/chicago-neighborhoods.html

Another great resource is the UIC Off‐campus Housing database system. This site is for the use of UIC students, staff and faculty, as well as landlords who wish to lease property to UIC stu‐ dents. hps://offcampushousing.uic.edu/

The UIC Commuter Student Resources Center also has an off‐campus housing site: hps://csrc.uic.edu/off‐campus‐housing/

City Living—If you are interested in living close to the college consider doing a search for these areas: Lile Italy, University Village, UIC/Medical District/Tri-Taylor, West Loop and South Loop. A word of advice: If finances are a concern, we recommend that you do not rush into signing a housing contract (lease) unl you are aware of all your housing opons. Calculate carefully what you can realiscally afford before making your decision. Be aware that heang costs may not be included in your rent and may be a separate expense. Due to the climate in Chica‐ go, this can be expensive. Following are helpful websites that may be of use to you in your search.

Collection of Teeth

As part of the first year fall and spring semester dental curriculum, you will take courses en‐ tled Denstry‐Applied Oral and Behavioral Sciences (DAOB). In these courses, you will learn about the dental anatomy and pracce preparing teeth for restoraon. The laboratory and pre‐clinical poron of these and other subsequent courses depend heavily on a collecon of extracted human teeth.

Again, in your D‐2 year you will learn root canal therapy mainly by performing root canal pro‐ cedures on extracted human teeth that you collect. You will need many average size, intact, hydrated, (not dry/brile) teeth of all types: maxillary and mandibular molars, premolars and anterior teeth (restored teeth are acceptable).

It is important that you begin collecng teeth now! Start with your family denst. Ask your orthodonst about other densts in your area who extract teeth (oral surgeons can be help‐ ful). It is very important that you have a wide variety of teeth. All these densts were once students too and learned their skills using extracted teeth they collected from praccing den‐ sts, so they fully understand. The extracted teeth may contain restoraons but should other‐ wise be of good quality (not severely broken down by decay or damaged during extracon), and must be hydrated. You should plan to collect teeth from several offices in order to obtain enough teeth for your dental educaon. You should collect at least 100 usable teeth in disin‐ fecon soluon (and many more teeth are strongly recommended) by the me you matric‐ ulate. You should connue to collect teeth aer matriculaon to be prepared for future courses. Non‐third molars are especially in demand. Aached you will find a leer you may copy and provide to densts you approach with storage instrucons.

Please pay parcular aenon to the Guidelines for Infecon Control in Dental Health Care Sengs. Please begin collecng teeth today! Don't delay the process!

19

Personal Computer & iPad

A personal laptop computer and an iPad ARE REQUIRED for your dental school educaon. For general communicaon, homework and network access, you will need a personal com‐ puter in order to be able to review the assigned weekly course requirements, using special course soware. When you decide to buy or update your own computer, the requirements to support the soware include minimums of: Plaorm: (PC): Windows 10 or (Mac): OS 10.15 or higher with Intel Corei5 processor Hardware: 250 GB Memory RAM: 8GB Screen size: 13” or higher Soware: Microso Office ‐ Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Examplify
