Defense performance all day, what did it do for you and what did the Tre Brown safety in the Tre Norwood fourth quarter do for you guys? KYLER MURRAY: It's something we talked about last Oklahoma Sooners night at our meeting behind closed doors, but we felt like we played together on all sides of the ball. That's a Oklahoma - 39 good team up there in West Virginia, but I feel like we found ourselves. Defense came up big last week and Texas - 27 this week. When we weren't scoring they got stops and that's how football is supposed to be played. I THE MODERATOR: We're joined by the Oklahoma think it was a great team win today, tonight, this team. Defensive Coordinator Ruffin McNeill

Q: After everything everyone has said, what can you say about this defense after a win like this? A: I think the kids, regardless of what people thought, they really have grown a lot as young men. They have learned to face adversity and not quit. Think about how many controversial situations this group has met and faced and didn’t quit, when other people may have. I’m very proud of them for that. I like their mentality. They have worked hard every day and their focus never waivered. We have been talking about having great effort, making sure fundamentals were continuing to improve, understanding the game better, and remembering FADO, forget and drive on. I’m proud of the boys.

Q: Can you take us through the Tre Brown call? A: I have called that particular blitz at least eight times before today. It’s a blitz where particular players and parts of the field determine who may rush and who may not rush. I thought it was great execution. It proved to be huge late for us.

Sr. WR Nick Basquine Q. Now that you’ve won, what is next? A. We did everything we can; now we just play the waiting game now.

Q. Is that going to be hard? A. We kind of have it figured out. There are two scenarios we have. We have to see it play out and then go from there.

Q. Do you think you did what you had to do today? A. Yeah, I think so. Obviously, you have to win the game, but we played well on both sides and showed that we are a complete team.

Q. About Grant Calcaterra’s touchdown catch A. Yeah, he’s got really good hands. We called that play for him and he came up big. To be able to see a play in that moment was really big.

Q. How big were your back-to-back catches? A. It meant a lot. Obviously, it’s been a tough season for me; just to be able to make an impact in a game like this that matters was a really good feeling.

Q. What about winning the Big 12 for the fourth straight year? A. It hasn’t been done before. We’re making history so it feels really good, but we’re not done.

Sr. OL Dru Samia Q. You’ve won four times in a row, but this seems to be the most dramatic A. It’s hard to put into words. It was definitely a hard-fought game, emotional, but I’m really proud of this group of guys and how far they’ve come since the start of the season.

Q. What did you have to do to right the ship in the second half? A. Just execute and focus. Obviously, the emotion was there, the intensity was there, but as far as the execution goes, we were lacking in that area. We came together. Our coaches helped us get back into it. We just rallied back.

Q. What was your emotion on Grant Calcaterra’s touchdown? A. That was probably the most excited I’ve been for a touchdown all season. I think you could see it in my face. Obviously, Grant is a really passionate player. I’m really happy for him. We fed off of his energy.

Sr. OL Dru Samia (cont.) Q. There were a lot of implications today, but getting your fourth Big 12 championship has to feel pretty special. A. It is just crazy. We all came in here, this senior class with the fifth-year seniors, working hard. It’s a special group. I’m really proud of all these guys. It’s just really special.

Q. How gratifying is it to win against your arch rival and the only team to beat you? A. It felt good, man. In college football you really don’t get rematches a lot, so we were blessed with this opportunity and took advantage of it. Playing two rivalry games in the same year is really weird, but we just stuck to the game plan, worked hard and it turned out well.

Q. How beneficial was it that the defense came up clutch with the safety? A. It was amazing. With the way the offense was playing, we weren’t hitting on all cylinders, but I’m really proud of the defense. They’ve had a really rough season if you believe the critics and the people having their two cents. They never gave up. They always believe in each other, work hard and its starting to show.

Fr. RB Kennedy Brooks Q. Did you guys talk about taking a lot of time off the clock on the final drive leading up to Calcaterra’s catch? A. We knew that we were going to run the ball. To be able to just stay in bounds there and take as much of the time off the clock as we needed, so we were just doing our job and Grant finished it off for us.

Q. How hard did your offense have to work to grind the ball today A. It’s the same amount of work we always do. We just go out there and do our jobs. It was a little bit harder to do; we made it harder on ourselves, but no matter who we play, we just have to go out there and be better.

Q. Was it good to win a game this way in that it was more difficult? A. It shows the confidence of our team. It shows the fight that we have to just go out there and just pull out tough games like this. We just go out there, do our job and just ball out for each other.

So. LB Kenneth Murray Q: What does this game mean to you? A: It means so much. We started talking about this game after walking off the field after the Rose Bowl and it has been one of our goals as a team that we finally completed that goal this year. It really means so much to move on to the next stage.

Q: Does this game validate you as a defense, after what has been said about you during the season? A: Yes, today we fought and went through it together. It went back and forth sometimes throughout the game, but we were able to come through with some big stops. The big safety that we had from TB was just amazing, the big interception from (Tre) Norwood at the end, those guys came out and made big plays today. It means so much to see your family around to see that.

Q: 20 points less than last game, what was the key? A: Just keeping things simple. After watching the tape the first time, we looked unorganized at times and they caught us off guard. Texas likes to show you one thing and then check to another thing. Coach Ruffin was able to put in check words for us to slow down when they wanted to hurry us up and help us be more organized in the back. Just keeping things simple and making plays.

So. WR CeeDee Lamb Q: You have a lot of receivers who can make plays on this team, what about this game allowed you to do that? A: I have said it once and I will say again, we are a lot. We have a lot of depth at the receiver position. We have guys that can make plays. When you get that opportunity, you have to cherish it.

Q: What emotions were going through your head when you had that fumble in the 4th quarter? A: My coach came up to me and said, ‘Just make me one promise. You promise me you will not let that play get to you. You never know when you are going to get the ball again and have a chance to make another play.’ We play fast here in the Big 12 and for Texas to give us the ball back after that, I was happy.

Q: As an offensive player, what can you say about the defense today? A: They are very hungry, no matter what people on the outside say about them. They won’t let them get to each other. They trust each other and lean on each other, and they will obviously grow from it.

R-Sr. LB Curtis Bolton Q: What does this game feel like knowing that this could be a championship team? A: With all do respect I feel like even though we’ve given up a lot of points, we have contributed to this team. We have the best offense in the country, but I feel like we came up with stops all year. But today I felt like we were solid on all three sides, we gave up a few over the top, but that is just something we have to go back and take care of.

Q: Any comment on Tre Brown and his play and how that was just a big play? A: You know, I noticed earlier in the game that they were having trouble protecting off the edge and Tre was free and didn’t hesitate and blew it up and put the quarterback down in the endzone. That was such a crucial part of the game, that we needed to come out on top and I’m just so proud of Tre that he didn’t fold in that situation and he completed the job

Q: It seemed like you guys were really laying some wood out there, was that something that was intentional, that you wanted to come out there and make sure they felt it? A: All we kind of heard was how bad we were, their players talking about how bad we were. We just wanted to come out and make a statement and say that we’re one of the better teams in the country and we were going to show them today in the Big 12 Championship. We saw this as a kind of redemption, that’s the purpose of our team goal the rest of the season. We wanted to show everybody that this wasn’t the team Texas played six weeks ago. I think we showed that and got the W and came out Big 12 champs.

Sr. LB Caleb Kelly Q: Talk about this win, what does it feel like? A: What does it feel like? That’s a good question; I mean a championship win, good week of practice and taking it into the game and doing what we needed to do to win.

Q: How much has this defense grown in the last couple of weeks? And how much more of a title contender do you think you guys have made this team? A: I definitely think we’re getting better every week and I think we’re practicing better and it’s carrying into the game more. I think we’re making more plays and getting turnovers and doing things that we need to do, and it’s fun, it’s exciting to be out there with my brothers.

Soph. RB Trey Sermon Q: How is your ankle feeling? A: It’s a little stiff but I mean once I got it moving around again I felt fine.

Q: Why do you think that it was a struggle to run the ball for a lot of the game? A: I mean it was our mentality just to dominate up front and in the run game. I felt like we all just weren’t in sync in the beginning of the game but after the safety we got momentum, picked it up and everybody did their jobs.

Q: Can you talk about overcoming your injury in order to be ready to play today? A: It was a good feeling to be out there today. It’s been pretty tough not being out there the past two weeks, but I knew that I had to get back healthy and get my ankle right. So I mean being out there now feels good to be out there with my boys.

Q: Can you take us through the challenges of not being overly aggressive today? A: It was a little difficult but I just had to stay focused and that’s the main thing.

Can you celebrate any way of how much you've seen this program change in your time here? COLLIN JOHNSON: You know, I wouldn't use the word "celebrate," but that's definitely a positive in the direction this program is going.

Coach Herman has done an unbelievable job of bringing his culture in. The guys bought in, and we're sitting here at a championship game. We haven't done that in a long time. Obviously, we fell short today, but there's definitely positives. In a time like this, you've got to focus on the positives and get back to work.

Q. Tom, for both you and Sam, it's looking like you guys should be in the Sugar Bowl, just the fact that Texas is going to possibly be in a New Year's Six bowl, how do y'all feel about that? TOM HERMAN: I've never been to a bad bowl game, so they're all good. Obviously, those New Year's six ones are special and the ones that I've been a part of they are phenomenally well run, great experiences for our players and, you know, it would be an honor to represent our university in one of those games.

SAM EHLINGER: I don't really have a comment. We're still at AT&T Stadium.

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations, guys, and good luck at your bowl game.

Sr. TE Andrew Beck Q. Do you think penalties played a role in the outcome? A. Yeah, I always think it’s hard to win when you have … I don’t even remember how many penalties we ended up having. [Reporter: 13] Uhh yeah, that makes it hard to win when you’re going backwards that many times, so I do think that had an impact. So we’ll watch the film and see how we can improve. Usually when there are penalties, it’s technique issues which thankfully are fixable. So we’ll look into it and see how we can fix it.

Q. How would you describe that momentum turn when Gary got the fumble and they got the safety? A. Yeah, they did a good job dialing up a defense that we hadn’t seen from them. I think they’ve run -- this entire season sitting down with the coaches and watching film – they’ve run corner chop once. One play. So they just so happened to dial it up at a good time for them and our slide couldn’t quite get there. So it stinks and one we’d like to have back. But it’s a game of chess and they got that one.

Q. Is Oklahoma better than they were in October? A. A lot of credit to them. They’re a good team. But I don’t know how much better they’ve gotten like I said when we were talking on Tuesday. They didn’t sign anybody else since the last time we played them. They made a couple of adjustments and we shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times with penalties.

Q. What are the biggest differences you saw in them defensively today? A. Not a whole lot.

Q. What did you see from Sam Ehlinger in the locker room after the game? A. He’s bummed, just like everybody else is. Thankfully for him, I’m excited for his future. He’s going to play in this game a couple of more times before he leaves here. So he’s got no reason to be bummed. I know he wanted to win it. Everybody that was in that locker room wanted to. But like I said, I’m excited for him and this entire team’s future because they’re going to be back here real soon.

Sr. LB Gary Johnson Q. When you chased down CeeDee Lamb, did you just think “make a play”? A. Yes sir. We practice that every day. Always swarm to the ball, no matter what. You never know what could happen and that pretty much showed why it’s important to always swarm to the ball.

Q. Did you feel like that was going to be the game-changing play? A. Definitely thought it swung the momentum. But momentum is illusion so it wasn’t like that. I just wanted to make a play, and once I did, bring some juice to my team.

Q. What did you think of the emotional swing when they got the safety? A. Just try to go get the ball back again. Things happen. Adversity hits. That’s something I was telling my guys. You know, ‘let’s go make a play.’

Sr. LB Gary Johnson (cont.) Q.What were you thinking after you forced that fumble? A. We practice that every day – we always swarm to the ball no matter what because you never know what can happen. We always try to hustle.”

Q. What would you say about the team’s overall performance today? A. We came to play today, we played physical. We came up short, which is something that hurts the most, but that’s a tremendous offense.”

Jr. WR Lil’ Jordan Humphrey

Q. How did the penalties play a part in the loss? A. I thought we kind of shot ourselves in the foot and we can’t do that. They played a big part it the loss so we have to do better in that aspect.

Q. How does this game stack up compared to other big games you have played in the past? A. With the rest of them. Every game means a lot to us and this was the Big 12 Championship, but we didn’t come out with the win.

Jr. DB Brandon Jones Q. How big was the Gary Johnson forced fumble as culture play? A. It kind of set up some momentum as a team. We kind of strive on making those culture plays to make a statement and try to be the most physical team on the field at all times.

Q. You rushed three and dropped eight and Oklahoma got some massive plays, is that just not the personality of this defense? A. Honestly, I’m not sure. I think overall we have to do a better job of finishing. There were a lot of mistakes on myself in man coverage, which I should have made – plays that I’m capable of making that I didn’t make. I just think it’s the little stuff that we have to correct mistake-wise. If you minimize the mistakes, it takes away a lot of their big plays.

Q. What was the emotional swing of the turnover, then allowing a safety and having to go back on the field? A. It is what it is. We thought that would be a momentum bringer to the team. Stuff happens. It’s football. It’s not always going to go your way. You’re always going to face adversity multiple times, so you just have to play off of that.

Sr. LB Anthony Wheeler Q. What was the turning point in this game? A. Coming out of the second half, we made too many mental mistakes. Against an offense like Oklahoma, you can’t make mistakes like that.

Q. Do you feel like a New Year’s Day kind of bowl team? A. I feel like we are. Regardless, if we lost, I feel like we won by the way we played. I feel like we played hard and never gave up.

Q. What did you do to make Oklahoma one-dimensional? A. The game plan was to stop the run first and then get back there and get to Kyler Murray if we could.

Q. What was the mood like in the locker room after the game? A. Everybody in there hurt. It was really emotional. Just thinking about this game and what we could have done better. We know we have to get back to work on Monday to get ready for the bowl game.

Jr. OL Zach Shackelford Q. Are there things you can take forward with you from this game? A. Yes and no. Yes, in the fact that we can find some positives in the fact that we got here from where we were last year. No, in the fact that we didn’t just come here to take part. We came here to win, which was disappointing, but we have to learn from it and get better.

Q. What was the atmosphere like? A. I thought it was an electric atmosphere, one of the best I’ve ever played in.

Q. How much did the penalties hurt? A. It takes us back five yards every time. In that sense, it hurts, but at the same time we just have to move on to the next play. In terms of long term, we have to learn from it and get better.
