The Hall of Honor and the Move to Tier One Athletics By Debbie Z. Harwell rom its earliest days, the University of Houston rose to Fthe top in athletics—not in football or basketball as you might expect, but in ice hockey. The team competed for the first time in 1934 against Rice Institute in the Polar Wave Ice Rink on McGowan Street. It went undefeated for the season, scoring three goals to every one for its opponents. The next year, only one player returned, but the yearbook reported that they “represented a fighting bunch of puck- pushers.” They must have been because the team had no reserves and played entire games without a break.1 The sports picture changed dramatically in 1946 when the University joined the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and named Harry H. Fouke as athletic director. He added coaches in men’s tennis, golf, track, football, and basketball, and a new director of women’s athletics focused on physical education. • Rating the Packers Vs
Rating the Packers vs. Vikings Vikings' weaknesses exposed in defeat Posted: Nov. 12, 2007 Green Bay - It took nine weeks but the Green Bay Packers finally played a game that wasn't settled until the fourth quarter. This one, a 34-0 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at Lambeau Field, was over by halftime. Using exquisite game plans drawn up by Mike McCarthy and Joe Philbin on offense and Bob Sanders on defense, the Packers thoroughly outcoached Brad Childress, one of the coaches high on Ted Thompson's list to replace Mike Sherman 22 months ago. McCarthy is 16-9, best in club history after 25 games, and is headed for a new contract. Childress, 9-16, could be headed for a pink slip if owner Zygi Wilf has to watch another travesty like this in the final seven games. Here is a rating of the Packers against the Vikings, with their 1 to 5 football total in parentheses: RECEIVERS (3½) With Minnesota missing injured CB Antoine Winfield, the Packers had their way with what was left: CB Cedric Griffin, CB Marcus McCauley, nickel back Charles Gordon and veteran safeties Dwight Smith and Darren Sharper. McCarthy used three or more wideouts on 61 of 82 snaps (counting penalties) against a defense that stayed in a two- safety shell and tried to play coverage. Five wideouts combined for 20 receptions and 290 yards, a performance marred by four drops (two by Greg Jennings, one each by Donald Driver and Donald Lee). Jennings, with five drops in the last three games and six overall, made a circus 34-yard catch, adjusting better than Griffin and absorbing Sharper's best kill shot without flinching.

BRIAN PATTERSON SPORTS PERFORMANCE CENTER An exciting new chapter in the storied history of Rice Stadium and Rice Athletics debuts this fall when the Owls move into their sparkling new end zone facility, the Brian Patterson Sports Perfor- mance Center. The fully-funded $33 million project includes a 60,000-square-foot, two-story structure that houses a weight room, a home team locker room, coaching and staff offices, an auditorium, a football team lounge and areas for training and sports medicine that include hydrotherapy, plunge pools and exam rooms. The weight room and sports medicine areas will be available to student-athletes from all sports at Rice. The new building features a glass wall on the side facing the football field that offers a view of the weight rooms on the ground and second floors. The other three sides will be made of brick that complements the color of the brick on the rest of the stadium. White columns supporting the roof will be similar to the columns in other parts of the stadium. A concrete ramp will provide access to the football field. Fans will also benefit from the dramatic upgrade in facilities with the installation of a new Daktronics video system Rice Stadium will also feature two acoustically transparent video displays in front of the venue’s speaker systems. These free-form LED stick applications will measure 29 feet high by 10 feet wide to provide additional video and graphics capabilities in a space typically used for fixed signage. These displays will provide flexibility to show multiple sponsorship messages throughout an event or additional graphics to pump up the crowd at key moments during the game.
