Professor Woolf's book is the most detailed study in English of the social as weil as political developments discussed in the first part of this study, while many of the essays in his recent The Poor in Western Europe in the 18th and 19th Centuries (London, 1986) also touch on this period. H. Hearder A History of Italy in the Age ofthe Risorgimento (London, 1982) is an up-to-date general study, and D. Mack Smith 'An Outline of Risorgimento History 1840-79' in D. Mack Smith Vietor Emanuel, Cavour and the Risorgimento (Oxford, 1971) provides an incisive survey of the political history of the Italian Risorgimento. For the period after Unification there is an admirable new study by M. Clark Modern Italy 1871-1982 (London, 1984), in addition to D. Mack Smith Italy: A Modern History (Ann Arbor, 1969) and C. Seton Watson Italy from Liberalism to Fascism (London, 1967). On social and economic developments see in particular the essays on 'The Poor, Proto-Industrialization and the Working Class: Italy (16th-19th centuries)' in S. J. Woolf The Poor in Western Europe (London, 1986); on agrarian change by A. Lyuelton 'Landlords, Pe asants and Liberalism' in J. A. Davis (ed.) Abstract: Since the 1990s, the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino houses the ornithological collection formerly belonging to the Zoological Museum of the University of Turin (MZUT). This collection includes about 20,500 specimens, mostly dating from the second half of the nineteenth century or early twentieth. The high number of type-specimens gives it great historical and scientific significance. The types have been described mainly by Tommaso Salvadori (171 taxa, 282 specimens) and, to a lesser extent, by other Italian authors such as Enrico Festa, Filippo de Filippi, Orazio Antinori, Enrico H. Giglioli or by foreign authors as John Gould, Eduard Rüppell, Coenraad Jacob Temminck, Philip

  • The Iconography of Some Phoenician Seals and Seal Impressions
AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY THE ICONOGRAPHY OF SOME PHOENICIAN SEALS AND SEAL IMPRESSIONS W. Culican, University of Melbourne The purpose of this paper is twofold: firstly, to publish a number of seals and seal impressions and secondly, to discuss the iconography of these and their relatives within the wider context of Phoenician glyptic art and religion. Many of the seals published here have details closely comparable to examples already known. Phoenician seals, mostly of green jasper and carnelian, but with occasional examples in chalcedony, and sharing many common techniques of gravure, are particularly well represented from the Phoenician colonies in the West Mediterranean. Most of the pub lished examples come from Tharros in Sardinia1 but they are well known at Carthage,2 Utica3 and from Spain, where Ibiza,4 Villaricos5 and Gibraltm·l\ have provided examples. There is an early find of imprints of these seals from Selinunte in Sicily,' but otherwise they are rare in the Phoenician colonies of Sicily, Motya having provided a few examples,8 and none is recorded from Malta. 1. H. B. WaIters, Catal. Engraved Gems and Cameos etc. in the British !VIlIseum, 1926; many are included in A. Furtwangler, Die AI/tiken Gemmel/ , 1900 (afterwards "Furtwangler"). Many of the seals illustrated by Alberto della Marmora's Sopra a/cllne al/tichita sW'de (Memorie della Reale Accad. di Scienze, Torino, 1854) were originally published by Canon B. Spano in various volumes of BIIII arch. sW'do; C. Mansell, Gaz. arch., 1877, pp. 74-76; 1878, pp. 35-40, 50-53, discusses individual motifs from Tharros scarabs.
