Questi incontri ci hanno portati ad avere una conoscenza della zoologia che va oltre le nozioni e che possiamo trasmettere ai nostri studenti. Anche quest’anno i simposi affronteranno argomenti fondamentali della biologia animale con l’obiettivo di fornire un quadro aggiornato basato su un approccio il più interdisciplinare possibile. Parleremo di: 1) Plasticità neurale, dati comparativi ed output comportamentali con il contributo dei relatori ad invito Peter Narins dell’Università della California e Frédéric Levy dell’Università di Tours. 2) Conservazione della biodiversità, estinzione e sviluppo sostenibile con i contributi di Francesco Santini e Nando Boero. 3) Specie introdotte, parassiti infestanti e malattie emergenti con il contributo di Piero Genovesi coordinatore IUCN. 4) Biologia della riproduzione e strategie riproduttive con i contributi di Gil Rosenthal della università Texas A&M e Xavier Turon dello CEAB-CSIC spagnolo. 5) Un momento di riflessione su ruolo e conseguenze dell’utilizzazione alimentare della fauna selvatica verrà sviluppato insieme ai colleghi della Università di Scienze Gastronomiche nella splendida sede di Pollenzo. L’importanza del nostro approccio comparato allo studio dell’evoluzione verrà discusso da Telmo Pievani che ci parlerà del ruolo evolutivo della cooptazione funzionale. L’avere una cultura biologica e far progredire la consapevolezza scientifica sui meccanismi evolutisi nel tempo a livello molecolare, cellulare, organismico, di popolazione e di specie non sembra però essere sufficiente per consentire di superare le sfide che il mondo universitario e quello culturale in genere, è chiamato ad affrontare oggigiorno. Non basta collaborare con i colleghi, ma occorre fare rete. E’ con questo obiettivo che i colleghi della Société Zoologique de France hanno proposto di trasformare la loro 118° riunione annuale nel secondo convegno congiunto tra UZI e SZF, in continuità ideale con il Congresso italo-francese organizzato nel 1984 a Padova. Il congresso si aprirà con un richiamo alla storia delle nostre interazioni a partire dal Risorgimento ricostruita da Pietro Passerin d’Entrèves e da Claudia Palestrini, completata poi da Jean- Loup d’Hondt. Uno sguardo a come affrontare il futuro verrà presentato durante la tavola rotonda dedicata agli strumenti a supporto della cooperazione in ricerca, alla valorizzazione delle collezioni museali, alla innovazione in didattica e ad innovazioni metodologiche durante il workshop dedicato al programma di gestione dati comportamentali BORIS. Questo volume riunisce i contributi di oltre 500 autori che lavorano in oltre 10 nazioni e che hanno avuto in questo secondo convegno congiunto un’occasione di confronto Il comitato organizzatore 7 Pre-Congress Workshop Coordinators: Marco Gamba – Olivier Friard ([email protected] - [email protected]) Behavioral analysis with BORIS The workshop aims at training academics and students as users of the acclaimed event-logging software called BORIS. The BORIS program is a free, open-source and multiplatform standalone program that allows a user-specific coding environment to be set for a computer-based review of previously recorded videos or live observations. Being open to user-specific settings, the program allows a project-based ethogram to be defined that can then be shared with collaborators or can be imported or modified. BORIS answers the need to provide researchers with a flexible tool to expand and enhance behavioral investigations. In recent years, quantitative aspects of the study of animal and human behavior are increasingly relevant to test hypotheses and find empirical support for them. Researchers frequently face the need to code considerable quantities of video recordings, often constrained by species-specific options or settings. Projects created in BORIS can include a list of observations, and each observation may include one or two videos (e.g. simultaneous screening of visual stimuli and the subject being tested; recordings from different sides of an aquarium). Once the user has set an ethogram, including state or point events or both, coding can be performed using previously assigned keys on the computer keyboard. BORIS allows the definition of an unlimited number of events (states/point events) and subjects. Once the coding process is completed, the program can extract a time-budget or single or grouped observations automatically and present an at-a-glance summary of the main behavioral features. The observation data and time-budget analysis can be exported in many standard formats. The workshop will start with a short introduction to methods and techniques used in behavioral research. I legami diventano invece assai più frequenti dopo la Rivoluzione con l’occupazione francese del Piemonte e la sua conseguente trasformazione in provincia metropolitana. Ciò è avvenuto anche, ma con formule di governo diverse, per altri stati italiani, prima indipendenti, aprendo un canale privilegiato con i centri di ricerca e i ricercatori d’oltralpe. I primi decenni dell’Ottocento sono caratterizzati dalla presenza, a Parigi, nel Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, di zoologi di fama mondiale, mentre nella capitale del nuovo Impero affluiscono materiali biologici frutto delle spedizioni francesi in tutto il mondo. L’Università di Torino dipende strettamente da quella di Parigi e George Cuvier (1769-1832), che visiterà Torino nel 1810, ne è Ispettore generale

ITE contributes to, and draws upon, the collective knowledge of the 13 sister institutes which make up the Natural Environment Research Council, spanning all the environmental sciences. The Institute studies the factors determining the structure, composition and processes of land and freshwater systems, and of individual plant and animal species. It is developing a sounder scientific basis for predicting and modelling environmental trends arising from natural or man- made change. The results of this research are available to those responsible for the protection, management and wise use of our natural resources. One quarter of ITE's work is research commissioned by customers, such as the Department of Environment, the European Economic Community, the Nature Conservancy Council and the Overseas Development Administration. The remainder is fundamental research supported by NERC. ITE's expertise is widely used by international organizations in overseas projects and programmes of research.

E-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION The 2014 BMIG field weekend, held from 24th to 27th April, was based at Saughy Rigg, half a mile north of Hadrian’s Wall, near Haltwhistle in Northumberland but very close to the border with Cumbria to the west and Scotland to the north. The main aim of the meeting was to record in central areas of northern England (VC 66, 67 and 70) where few records existed previously but many attendees were drawn also to sites on the east coast of England (VC 66) and to the Scottish coast on the Solway Firth (VC 73). All these vice counties had been visited by BMG/BISG or BMIG in the previous twenty years but large parts of them remained under-recorded. The annual joint field meeting of BMG and BISG in 1995 was held at Rowrah Hall near Whitehaven (VC 70). Gregory (1995) reports 24 millipede species found during the weekend including Choneiulus palmatus new to VC 70. A list of the centipede appears not to have been published. Bilton (1995) reports 14 woodlouse species including Eluma caelata found at Maryport, its most northerly global location, and Armadillidium pictum in the Borrowdale oakwoods.

INTRODUCTION Armadillidium nasatum Budde-Lund is one of the commonest oniscoid isopods in the south-eastern United States (Schultz, 1961). In Albemarle County, Virginia, and probably throughout its range, the species is polymorphic for body colour. The Oniscoidea as a whole are quite variable in colour and pattern (Vandel, 1960, 1962), and several workers have studied the genetics of individual loci (for references see Vandel, 1945, 1962). Only two have dealt with the frequency of genes in populations. Howard (1940, 1953, 1962) has investigated the genetics of Armadillidium vulgare with some attention to populations. De Lattin (1939, 1951, 1954) has studied the genetics of albinism and marbling in many species and has determined gene frequencies in some of them. However, neither study has seriously attempted to discover the causes for the polymorphisms. An extensive literature is available on the taxonomy (Vandel, 1960, 1962), physiology (Edney, 1954), and ecology (Hatchett, 1947; Brereton, 1957; Paris, 1962, 1963; Warburg, 1965) of land isopods. These works provide all the necessary background for investigations of population genetics in this large and widespread group of animals. Therefore, it seems important to apply to A. nasatum the techniques of ecological genetics so successfully used for other animals (Fisher and Ford, 1947; Cain and Sheppard, 1954; Dowdeswell, 1961). 2. METHODS (a) Collections All of the isopods used in this study were collected from natural popula- tions in Albemarle County, Virginia, from September 1964 to May 1968.

In the first volume of the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, pub- lished in 1818, Thomas Say presented “An Account of the Crustacea of the United States.” Crustacea are arthropods such as lobsters, crabs, shrimp, barnacles, and four- teen-legged creatures called isopods. Terrestrial isopods include familiar garden ani- mals known by many colloquial names, such as woodlice, sowbugs, roly-polies, and pillbugs. Say noted that one species, currently named Armadillidium vulgare, “is very common in moist places, under stones, in decaying wood, &c.”2 This species inhabits our garden in Center City. Introduction of pillbugs Unlike the Chinese mantid, A. vulgare in North America left no obvious clues to its place of origin. A genetic study of 10,000 of these pillbugs in 157 populations in Europe and North America concluded that this species was introduced from north- ern Europe.3 Root balls in imported horticultural and agricultural stock could have carried it in, or dirt used in ship ballast dumped near American ports could have transported it here.

Until fairly recently the main commercial species caught in Atlantic waters was assumed to be M.squinado. However, Neumann (1998) suggested that Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of M.squinado were distinct species based on morphological and biometric characters and concluded M.squinado in the Atlantic were in fact M.brachydactyla. Genetic analysis has since supported the recognition of two separate species with M.squinado restricted to the Mediterranean (Sotelo et al., 2009). M.brachydactyla is distributed in the eastern Atlantic from the western Sahara in the south to the southern British Isles in the north, including the Azores and Canary Islands (d’Udekem d’Acoz, 1999 cited in Abelló et al., 2014). It is most abundant at depths between 0-70 m, although it has been recorded at 120 m (Pawson, 1995). This species of spider crab can be found on most seabed types and scavenges food including carrion, encrusting animals, and seaweed. M.brachydactyla is known as the common spider crab but it might also be referred to as, the spinous, spiny, or European spider crab (names also used for M.squinado).

Interactions of the fishery of the spider crab Maja squinado with mating, reproductive biology and migrations. ICES Journal of Marine Science. In this paper different aspects of the fishery and life history of the spider crab Maja squinado in southern Galicia (NW Spain) are analyzed to evaluate the potential effects of the fishery on the sperm limitation of the reproductive effort (egg production) of the population. Juveniles of the spider crab inhabit shallow waters (<15 m), where they carry out a terminal moult in August-September, attaining sexual maturity when they are 2+ years old. A short time after the terminal moult (October-November), adults migrate to deeper waters (up to 100 m), where mating occurs (January-February). Field and laboratory data show that multiple matings and sperm storage in female seminal receptacles occur, indicating that females are able to fertilize multiple broods during the annual breeding cycle using stored sperm. The spider crab is the target of a tangle-net fishery, characterized by a very high fishing effort similar for both sexes. The fishing season is from November-December until May-June and is mostly dependent on migrating animals. Data from catch composition (percentage of recent recruits at the beginning of the season), recaptures from the fishery of females tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and electronic archival tags, and CPUE trends over the course of the fishing season (Leslie analyses of stock depletion) indicate that more than 90% of postpubertal (primiparous) adults are caught during the fishing season.

The highly diverse diet was made up primarily of macroalgae and benthic invertebrates that were either sessile or had little mobility. The most important prey were the seaweeds Laminariaceae (43% of the frequency of occurrence and 15% of the food dry weight), Corallina spp. (38% and 3%), molluscs [the chiton Acanthochitona crinitus (15% and 1%), the gastropods Bittium sp. (30% and 2%),Trochiidae and others and the bivalve Mytilus sp. (32% and 12%)], echinoderms [the holothurian Aslia lefevrei (32% and 18%) and the echi- noid Paracentrotus lividus (16% and 7%)] and solitary ascidians (18% and 6%). The variability in diet composition was determined by the season (Laminariaceae, Corallina spp., P. lividus, Mytilus sp., gastropods and chitons appeared in greater frequency in winter, while the solitary ascidians and A. lefevrei were consumed to a greater extent in summer) in addition to sexual maturity (prey such as Bittium sp.

Chelonia and Crocodylia ABSTRACT The revised catalogue of chelonians and crocodiles belonging to the historical material of Turin University and housed in the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino is pro- vided. The material, totally including 59 species of tortoises and turtles and 13 species of lor- icates, is particularly important since specimens were mainly obtained during the 19th Cen- tury and the first decades of the 20th Century. Most of these animals were personally import- ed alive and bought by the Count Mario Giacinto Peracca, who kept them in his glasshouses and estate, and were donated to the Museum after their death. Other remarkable individuals were captured during expeditions sponsored by the Museum, such as those by its collabora- tor Enrico Festa and by Alfredo Borelli, and the remarkable circumnavigation expedition of the “Regia Pirocorvetta Magenta”. Great part of the specimens is stuffed, while smaller specimens are preserved in ethanol. Finally, of particular importance we quote the anatomi- cal material derived from the specimens before being prepared, and consisting of skeletal pieces - including crania - or of internal organs.
