• Gulshan Zubair Under the Supervision of Dr. Parwez Nazir
ROLE OF MUHAMMADAN EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE IN THE EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL UPLIFTMENT OF INDIAN MUSLIMS ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Submitted for the Award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In History by Gulshan Zubair Under the Supervision of Dr. Parwez Nazir Center of Advanced Study Department of History ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2015 ABSTARACT Since the beginning of the 19th century the East India Company had acquired some provinces and had laid down a well planned system of education which was unacceptable to the Muslims. For its being modern and progressive Dr. W.W. Hunter in his book ‘Indian Musalmans’ accepted that the newly introduced system of education opposed the conditions and patterns prevalent in the Muslim Community. It did not suit to the general Muslim masses and there was a hatred among its members. The Muslims did not cooperate with the British and kept them aloof from the Western Education. Muslim community also felt that the education of the Christian which was taught in the Government school would convert them to Christianity. This was also a period of transition from medievalism to modernism in the history of the Indian Muslims. Sir Syed was quick to realize the Muslims degeneration and initiated a movement for the intellectual and cultural regeneration of the Muslim society. The Aligarh Movement marked a beginning of the new era, the era of renaissance. It was not merely an educational movement but an all pervading movement covering the entire extent of social and cultural life. The All India Muslim Educational conference (AIMEC) is a mile stone in the journey of Aligarh Movement and the Indian Muslims towards their educational and cultural development.

• Allama Shibli Nomani Aligarh Movement
Subject:- PERSIAN M.A. IInd Semester Course No. Per 205 Unit-III Topic- Study of Allama Shibli Nomani Online Class Materials By Dr. Sk Md Hafijur Guest Lecturer L. S. College, Muzaffarpur Allama Shibli Nomani Aligarh movement According to some scholars, Shibli was against the Aligarh movement. He opposed the ideology of Sir Syed and that is why he was debarred from the services of Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. Kamleshwar wrote a novel 'Kitne Pakistan' (How Many Pakistan?) and in that novel he portrays Nomani as a narrow-minded Muslim theologian. In another book, 'Ataturk Fi Karbala by Arif ul Islam', the author alleged that Shibli was not happy with Sir Syed's policies and ideologies and was involved vehemently against Aligarh movement. There does not appear to be evidence of any difference of opinion between Nomani and Sir Syed either in the former's writings or in the correspondence during the life-time of the latter. Shibli's first critical reference is not to Sir Syed but to Altaf Hussain Hali with reference to "Hayat-i-Javed" which Shibli referred to as "sheer hagiography" (sarasar madah sarai). It was only later, i.e. after 1907 that Shibli made many critical references to 'Aligarh College' and occasionally to the founder Sir Syed. From these writings, one is inclined to agree with the reasons assigned by Shaikh Ikram for this change of attitude. These are: (a) Nomani‘a desire to show that the traditionalist model of Nadwa was superior to that of Aligarh. (b) Nomani‘a affection and reliance on Abul Kalam Azad who was allergic to Aligarh and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

• A Great Stalwart of Aligarh Movement Nawab Mohsin-Ul-Mulk
Pakistan Vol. 49, 2013 Annual Research Journal A GREAT STALWART OF ALIGARH MOVEMENT NAWAB MOHSIN-UL-MULK Prof. Abdul Sattar Khan Abstract Nawab Mohsin-ul-Mulk, one of the great stalwart of the Aligarh Movement, has rendered valuable services for the educational uplift of the Muslims in the subcontinent. He was a strong adherent of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in pursuing educational philosophy. He tried his level best to stand Aligarh on strong footings. In political domain, he played a pivotal role in supporting the Muslim cause in the subcontinent. The paper tends to highlight the personality of Mohsin-ul-Mulk in a holistic way. Key words Nawab Mohsin-ul-Mulk, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Aligarh Movement, Mohammadan Educational Conference, Congress. The sad demise of the War of Independence of 1857 had landed the Muslims in extremely hapless and miserable conditions. Their resurgence as a nation required a miracle. It was the Aligarh Movement of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan which came like a ray of hope and injected a new spirit in the dormant body of the Muslim nation. The historic achievements of Aligarh Movement were achieved under the earnest and diligent services rendered by his closely associated colleagues. They were tireless workers and loyal lieutenants of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and always stood by him in all circumstances. Their devotion and loyalty to the cause of Aligarh was a great source of strength for the sage of Aligarh. “After Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s death, the great movement might have been failed if his loyal lieutenants Moshin-ul-Mulk and Viqar-ul-Mulk had not come to its rescue”.1 The name of Moshin-ul-Mulk is most prominent for keeping the mission of Aligarh alive and making it dynamic after the death of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

• Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali(1837 - 31 December 1914) Maulana Khawaja Altaf Hussain Hali (Urdu: ?????? ????? ????? ???? ????) was an Urdu poet, and writer. Hali occupies a special position in the history of Urdu literature. He was a poet, a critic, a teacher, a reformer and an impressive prose- writer. He was a close friend of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Moulana Altaf Hussain Hali has an important place in Urdu literary history. He is one of the Aanasar-e-Khamsa of Urdu. He has written the Musaddas-e-Hali which occupies an important position in Urdu literature. Short Biography Born in Panipat, circumstances did not permit him to attain formal education in a school or college, yet he managed to acquire , through sustained self-effort, perfect command of Urdu, Persian and Arabic, and a good working knowledge of English. He later moved to Delhi where he wished to study the Islamic theology and poetic tradition. As a poet he did not confine himself within the narrow bounds of the ghazal, but successfully exploited the other poetic forms such as the nazm, the rubai, and the Marsia. More particularly, he harnessed his poetic abilities to the higher aims of social and moral edification. His famous long poem, Musaddas-e-Hali, examines the state of social and moral degradation prevalent in the then contemporary Muslim society. His prose treatise, Muqaddama-e- Shair-o-Shairi, is a pioneering work of literary criticism. It dwells on the limitations of the traditional ghazal, and points to the hollowness of its hackneyed themes and imagery, especially when the form is handled by inferior poets and versifiers.

• Altaf Hussain Hali's Ideas on Ghazal
Bāzyāft-28 (January-July 2016) Urdu Department, Punjab University, Lahore 3 Altaf Hussain Hali’s Ideas on Ghazal Alessandro Bausani (Rome) KEYWORDS: The Musaddas, Muslim enlightenment, Aligarh Movement , Indian Muslims, socio-historical concept, composition, structure, means of artistic expression, imagery. ________________________ The importance of Maulana Altaf Husain Hali [Alṭāf Ḥusain Ḥālī] in the evolution of Urdu literature is sufficiently known, and we don’t need to emphasize it here again. i It is sufficient to say that his Muqaddama , or ‘Introduction” (originally intended as a rather long preface to his Divān , published in 1893) was and still partly is considered the modern ars poetica for Urdu poetry. “Hali and Shibli ii were the two great literary dictators of their age: writes Dr. Vahid Quraishi in the preface to his valuable re-edition of the Muqaddama published by the Maktaba-e Jadid in Lahore with interesting notes and appendices iii —they studied the old and new literary criticism and after having clearly fixed the limits of the old frame they tried to pour into it the leaven of Western ideas”. Such first attempts to create a fusion of Eastern and Western ideals in Art I consider extremely interesting both for their theoretical value (nobody can possibly know the intricacies and depths of the Muslim poetical style as much as an oriental poet) and their practical results. From the latter point of view it is sufficient 4 Altaf Hussain Hali’s Ideas on Ghazal to say that Hali is considered the renovator of modern style in Urdu and a bridge between the great Ghalib iv and the national Poet-Philosopher of Muslim India and Pakistan, Muhammad Iqbal.
