Cebulski. Writer C.B. Cebulski previews artwork from and answers your questions about "X-Men: X-Infernus," the sequel to the classic "Inferno" storyline, and teases new Loners! Anyone up for a ride on the highway to Hell? Well, as that’s not possible, how about a trip down the carpool lane to Limbo in December, courtesy of the miniseries, “X-Men: X-Infernus” by writer C.B. Cebulski, penciler Giuseppi Camuncoli and cover artist David Finch. The title marks a return to the world of Magik — also known as Darkchylde or Illyana, sister of X-Man Colossus — and serves as a sequel to the classic “Inferno” storyline from 1989. “X-Infernus” promises to be a blast from the X-Men’s past that will definitely have repercussions in the present. C.B. Cebulski, who spoke with CBR about “X-Infernus” back in July, has also penned such titles as “X-Men: Return of Magik” and the fan- favorite “The Loners,” and has contributed to “X-Men: Manifest Destiny.” Cebulski’s worked previously as an editor and talent manager for Marvel, but the scribe is now facing one of his most difficult assignments ever: answering your questions here at X-POSITION! Let’s take it easy on him, but considering the topic, we have a feeling that things are going to heat up quickly. Let’s begin with an assortment of queries from Faded Day, who was curious about individuals that fans might see in “X-Men: X-Infernus.” 1) Will "X-Infernus" mark the return of other characters besides Magik? Yes, Magik will not be the only character returning in “X-Infernus.” I won't reveal if that means returning from the dead or from other certain places unknown in the Marvel universe, but some faces not seen in a long time will be popping up come December. 2) Your Karma story in "X-Men: Manifest Destiny" re-teams you with awesome artist David Yardin, who you previously worked with during "X- Men: Divided We Stand.” Will Mr. Yardin continue to beautify our gene-freaks in the future? That's really up to Marvel Editorial, Faded. My two collaborations with David have both been wonderful experiences and I would love to work with him again on something! I have a few new projects I'll be pitching soon and will definitely recommend David as the artist I want to bring my future scripts to life. 3) Despite the distance between Detroit and San Francisco, will X-Factor somehow be involved in the "X-Infernus" crossover? Unfortunately not. Peter David has big plans for X-Factor, and Madrox and Co. will be too busy up in the Motor City to travel down to San Fran — or to Limbo for that matter — to help out during “X-Infernus.” AllThatsGeek also had a character request they wanted to see -- as more than just body art! Just a quick question regarding “The Return of Magik” — I am a huge Colossus fan (to the point of having him tattooed on my leg). How involved is Pete going to be with this arc? I have to believe he will show up somewhere, but will it be a "Oh yeah, here's the brother" cameo, or something a little more front and center (something nobody seems to really do with him anymore)? First off, please send us a pic of that tattoo, geek! And yes, you'll be happy to hear that Colossus is one of the driving forces behind “X-Infernus,” and Piotr will be front and center in all four issues. Please send any and all pics of X-themed tattoos our way for the upcoming X-POSITION X-TREME X-TATTOOS SPECTACULAR. Kroller is up next, and he wants details about the new miniseries. As he’s acting downright neighborly, do you have a cup or two of spoilers to spare? 1) I’ve heard that the New X-Men show up in “Infernus.” Will any of them play major roles? It seems that should figure largely into the mix as Illyana made a dagger out of part of her soul. Yes, Pixie is indeed one of the major players in “X-Infernus,” as you guess, and Mercury also has a large part to play as well. A few of the other X-kids will be showing up too. 2) It also seems the New Mutants should be making an appearance in this book, as they were Illyana’s best friends. Will they figure into the mix? I don't want to give too much away, but a few of them will, yes. 3) I know Kitty is “off in space,” but is there any chance her presence will be felt in the story, as she knew Illyana best and was closest with her? You'll just have to wait and see on that front, Kroller. 4) I read all of the “New X-Men” stories and enjoyed them, but the one that involved Magik left me a bit confused (I’m sorry to say). It almost seemed to say that the Illyana/Magik we saw wasn’t the one we knew (or something like that). Plus, she needs to make soulstones to escape limbo? Could you give us a Cliff Notes explanation? My fingers need their strength for typing scripts, so try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illyana_Rasputin. It seems that Nancy Boy believes in Occam’s Razor, and wants to see if C.B. is a believer as well. What say you, C.B.? Why the convoluted return for Magik? Limbo had at least two variants of each X-Man and up till “Inferno” only one Illyana. Why not just say the 'real' Magik had been in Limbo all this time and leave it at that? All will be revealed in time, Nancy Boy. Ha! See what Occam has to say about that! And now it’s time to join our friend Derek, as he reminisces of days gone by…. I really enjoyed the original “Inferno,” but at the same time I was very disappointed that a terrific character like Madelyne Pryor was written off. Is there any chance she might return? Possibly, but not in “X-Infernus.” Hm. That sounds like a “maybe.” Let’s let Caleb Warren try another approach on that particular query. 1) You've said that in “X-Infernus” Illyana will be taking on kind of a “Madelyne Pryor” role. In that case, will anyone be taking on the role Jean played in “Inferno”? Again, yes, but I can't answer as to who just yet for fear of spoiling the story. 2) Who's your favorite X-character? People always break my balls about it, but Dani Moonstar is my favorite X-character (cue Fraction and Brubaker laughter). 3) Please do more with the Loners. Working on it, Caleb! Philip A. Moore closes out our little X-party today with the following set of questions: 1) Is “X-Infernus” going to be a self-contained story like “Onslaught Reborn” or will other X-books tie for an issue or two, like “House of M”? “X-Infernus” will be self-contained, and released as a four issue mini-series starting in December. Ramifications will be felt in the other X-books as we go though. 2) Do you have any other X-Men miniseries in the works? I noticed you wrote the Karma story in “X-Men: Manifest Destiny” — is there any chance this story will be leading into a larger storyline in the X-books? No plans at the moment, Philip. I have a Mercury story in an upcoming issue of “Manifest Destiny” and am wrapping up “X-Infernus” now. After that, I have a few ideas I'll be pitching. I would love to get to write some of the New X-Men or New Mutant characters in the near future though! Wow! Two X-POSITIONS in one week, and it’s not even your birthday (is it?). What can we say — we love our readers! And don’t forget, we’ll be right back here early next week with “X-Force” writers Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. Oh, and if you ask really nicely, Yost may even answer a question or two about “X-Men: Kingbreaker.” So what are you waiting for? Send us those questions ASAP. Throw “X-Position” in the subject line and we won’t think you’re an ad for Cialis, okay? See you soon! X-Men: How X-Infernus Brought Magik Back Into the Marvel Universe. Illyana Rasputin has long been one of the X-Men's darkest characters, and X-Infernus saw her go through Hell to come back to the team. Illyana Rasputina has been, for as long as she's been part of the Marvel universe, a fan-favorite character no matter what form she's taken on. As Magik, she's fought alongside her brother Colossus and the other X-Men, not to mention the Savage , taking down all sorts of terrestrial, alien and mystical threats. As Darkchylde, she has ruled over Limbo and spilled the blood of demons in her conquest of the realm. In the pages of X-Infernus , Illyana fought some of the toughest battles of her life as Darkchylde, cut off from her loved ones and allies, all to literally win back her own humanity. Published originally in 2009, X-Infernus by C.B. Cebulski, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Jesse Delperdang, Dave Lanphear and Marte Gracia followed the aftermath of Illyana's untimely death. After the fallout of Inferno -- in which Illyana was the gateway for the demonic invasion of Earth -- the young hero emerged even younger, having de-aged from her Magik persona back into a young girl. Once returned to her family, she found herself at peace, if only for a moment, as it wasn't long after that she would become the first unfortunate victim of the Legacy Virus. The demon sought after Illyana's soul for his own nefarious purposes and resurrected her in her Darkchylde form. As Darkchylde, Illyana went to great lengths to try and restore her lost humanity, even taking a piece of Pixie's soul to craft a new soulsword with. Trapped in Limbo, the X-Men are coming to odds over how to handle the situation, with Colossus losing his patience with Cyclops' apparent refusal to do more. Belasco's daughter, Witchfire, brings word of Darkchylde's quest to reclaim the lost pieces of her soul and restore her humanity to the Table of Demonic Overlords which her father used to have a seat at. She is in possession of the bloodstones and wants to take back her patriarch's former rule of Limbo for herself. is willing to at least let her try, agreeing to give her a seat at their table should she be successful. Darkchylde is closer to her goals than Witchfire realizes though, as she ambushes the X-Men in the Danger Room after Pixie's soulsword took control of her while training with . After stabbing her mentor in the chest, Pixie removed her dagger from his torso, dragging Illyana's soulsword out behind it, and Darkchylde has come to claim what is hers. After taking her soulsword back from Pixie, Illyana is almost restored to her former self, though she doesn't spend any time explaining that to the other X-Men who arrive on the scene, including her brother. The X-Men now know without a doubt that she is still alive, and they form a team to go into Limbo and recover her. Nightcrawler leads Colossus, Rockslide, Pixie, Mercury and into Limbo, and the group lands right in the thick of things when they arrive. Illyana, in chains, tells Nightcrawler that he's their last hope, begging him to stab her with Pixie's dagger. Doing so draws forth Illyana's soulsword and allows Kurt to turn the tide of battle. In spite of this, Witchfire takes a second piece of Pixie's soul, completing the Bloodstone Amulet and calling forth the Elder Gods to wreak havoc on this plane of existence. The X-Men aren't done fighting though and dive headfirst into a scrape with literal gods while Magik goes to deal with Witchfire. Witchfire isn't concerned, at least not until Illyana doesn't even flinch in the face of her powerful magic. Illyana has donned the mutant Mercury, who is invulnerable to magic, as a living suit of armor. Mercury makes her presence known and helps Illyana strip Witchfire of her amulet. With the combined might of herself and Pixie, Illyana is able to sever the amulet's full power, though they lose the amulet and Witchfire to the ensuing vortex. Pixie, unable to deal with the loss of more of her own soul, takes off on her own. Illyana, believing herself a monster, is hesitant to rejoin the other X-Men back on Earth, but acquiesces to their pleas. From that point forward Magik would go on to become a regular fixture of the various X-books at the time. More than an action-packed adventure through Hell and back, X-Infernus shaped and defined a key part of the Marvel universe for years to come in just four short issues. John Dodge has been an avid consumer of comic books and nerd culture for just about his entire life. He has written for almost that long. X-POSITION: C.B. Cebulski & Cammo. Writer C.B. Cebulski answers your questions about "X-Infernus," demons, and Cebulski-related rumors. Plus a guest appearance by "X-Infernus" artist Giuseppe Camuncoli and exclusive art you won't see anywhere else! Illyana Rasputin has had a hell of a life - literally . To begin with, she is the sister of Colossus of the X-Men, which has made her a target (incidental and intentional) of his enemies since she was a young child. As a matter of fact, this led Illyana to being kidnapped by the sorcerer Belasco and taken to Limbo, where parts of her soul were stripped and used to make a powerful Bloodstone pendant. After eventually defeating Belasco, Illyana returned to Earth several years later. While she had aged into a teenager, Illyana discovered that no time at all had passed since her kidnapping. She then joined the New Mutants, fought valiantly, was later de-aged back to a child, and finally died as a result of the Legacy virus, a deadly disease that only affects mutants. But like all good superheroes who die, Illyana came back in the pages of the "New X-Men". sort of. Belasco had returned to Limbo and used a spell to pull forth the remaining essence and memories of Illyana still held within the dimension. This "essence" took shape and became the Darkchylde, which looks like Illyana (complete with goat legs), but at the same time, isn't quite her. Did you get all that? Well, if you have questions. good! That's why X-POSITION is here, to give fans a place where they can query of the writers, artists and editors of Marvel's X-Men family of books. This week's guests include writer C.B. Cebulski and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli (a.k.a. Cammo), who have teamed together to bring you the four-issue "X-Infernus" miniseries, issue #1 can be found in stores now . This is the book that will enlighten readers on what has occurred to poor little Illyana, and begins the next new chapter in her interesting life. We had lots of people write in last week, so without further ado, let's jump out of the frying pan and into the fire. [All answers by C.B. Cebulski, unless otherwise indicated.] Excalibur88 gets to start things off today, because he obviously did his homework. 1) You did a story about Peter and Illyana back in "X-Men Unlimited" #14. I was wondering how long you've been thinking about doing this particular story or others with these characters? Thanks for bringing up that "X-Men Unlimited" story, ! It's one of the earliest things I wrote for Marvel and still one of my favorites. It was actually [artist] David Aja's first work for Marvel, I believe. The New Mutants have been my favorite Marvel characters since I was a child, with Illyana at the top of the list. (Dani's still number one though!) I've always had various ideas for her, but the thought of writing her return came to me a little over a year ago. I'm so happy Marvel saw fit to let me tell it! 2) Will you be writing or be editing any more X-Men books in the near future? I hope so. I love the X-Men and have a few new ideas I'll be pitching to Marvel soon! Solicitations for "X-Infernus" have indicated that Colossus will be travelling to Limbo with a few of his teammates, in addition to several New X- Men. Naturally, this raises a question about the cast. We'll allow Philip Denver to pose the question: I can understand why Colossus is taking his friends and some of the New X-Men to Limbo due to their powers and history, but why aren't any of the New Mutants going? Since they were Illyana's close friends, I am wondering why they aren't playing a larger role in this series. Good question, Philip. The reason not a lot of Illyana's friends are going after her is that they're all a little busy elsewhere at the moment. Kitty was obviously closest to Illyana, but she's no longer with us, unfortunately. Dani's also one of her best friends, but she's depowered right now. Rahne is going through her own troubles in "X-Force," as I'm sure you've read. You'll see Karma in issue #2, but she's not going on the mission for her own reasons. And each of the other New Mutants are unavailable for various story reasons. Bums me out too as I would have loved to have written them, but maybe they'll get a chance to interact with Illyana in the near future. Christopher Judd apparently believes C.B. is Santa and has sent in an item from his wish list: #1 Magik Fan here! Is there any chance Dani Moonstar will be repowered through magic before this story is through? As much as I would love to see that, no mutants will be repowered for the foreseeable future, Christopher. Up next is Aether, who was wondering about a few of the story's details. 1) Will we be seeing Amanda Sefton or Margali in the story you are telling? No, Amanda has her own demons to deal with at the moment. Limbo is not a place she wants to go back to anytime soon. 2) Is that Mr. Fantastic's arm that can be seen on the cover of the next issue? Wha. huh? I gotta check that. Hold on. ah, I see what you're referring to, Aether. No, that's Mercury's arm, actually. Magik has her fans, but C.B. has a few of his own; most notably, our next contributor - Venomous! Hey C.B., I'm a big fan, and I'd just like to say that I absolutely love your grasp of continuity. And on that note. 1) In "X-Infernus," you seem to be making a great many references to Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's pending "Unholy War" storyline - a book he's been laying hints for in essentially everything he's written for Marvel Knights: from "4" to "Nightcrawler" and on to "Sensational Spider-Man" (and even in his one-off issue of "Young Avengers Presents"). Were your references intentional, or am I reading too much into it? They were indeed intentional and hopefully we will see that story told in full someday soon. 2) I noticed you had a great many of the Hell Lords assembled in the first issue, but I was wondering why the Olympian Pluto/Hades and Ghost Rider's Lucifer weren't present? Mephisto snubbed them both. Heh. Prodigial sent in a prodigious amount of questions for this week's guests. He begins: Cebulski, there's so many components to watch out for in this story: Limbo, the amulet, Magik's Soulsword, Pixie's SoulDagger, spells, teleportation discs, etc. You've got my hopes up and I want to wish you good luck writing all this into one epic event! Yeah, it's been a lot of get a handle on, to be honest, but I think I got it all nailed down and I hope it shows. 1) What the hell was Illyana's Soulsword doing within Nightcrawler?! Amanda Sefton placed it there to hide it. You can read old issues of Nightcrawler's solo series written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for more info on that, Prodigial. 2) Is Amanda Sefton really their only way of getting into Limbo?! Not anymore, she's not! 3) Colossus got really frustrated and was pretty harsh to Scott. Is the loss of Kitty and his sister going to bring more of a mean arse out of him? Read "Uncanny X-Men" for the answer to that one. It's something Fraction will be addressing in that series. 4) What kind of agenda does Witchfire have beyond being Belasco's daughter? I got a feeling she is going to be a big problem. She's not going to do the 'baby sacrifice' stunt, is she? You'll just have to keep reading to find out. 5) Are Sym, N'Astirh, and other demons going to terrify San Francisco like they did when they partied in New York City? Not this time around. They're knee-deep in it down in Limbo to do much more this time around. 6) And will we have to watch out for any new Limbo-characters? 7) Assuming we get an authentic Magik at the end of this saga, can Magik return everything the did back to normal? No, she's not that powerful just yet - unless she gets all five Bloodstones and calls upon the power of the Elder Gods. Another wait and see, I guess. 8) I like the artwork Cammo has done so far. Whose aesthetic choice was it to do the new Darkchylde with goat-legs - Cammo's? And what's the biggest challenge you have found in drawing demons? The goat legs were part of the last look Darkchylde had after the "Quest for Magik" arc in "New X-Men." And doesn't Cammo just draw the most kick-ass demons? Giuseppe Camuncoli a.k.a. Cammo: Thank you, C.B. And glad you like what I did so far, Prodigial; hope you'll feel the same with what you haven't seen yet. I just love letting my creativity loose with demons. It's fun, challenging and entertaining at the same time. Really, there's no specific challenge on the "drawing demons" side; the only difficult thing to me is coming up with new designs every time. I know I don't necessarily have to invent new demons at each turn, but I just can't resist. And as much as I always prefer a nice pair of human legs (possibly with boots) in a lady, I "had" to stick with Darkchylde original design. It's a demon - she doesn't necessarily have to look hot! And what if we do think the goat legs look hot? Um, never mind. Let's go straight to this email from AnonyMouse: C.B, first, please tell Cammo he's awesome! Cammo, you're awesome! Cammo: Thanks again C.B., and thanks AnonyMouse too! How can I reply to both of you in a fashionable yet not banal way? Well, let's just say that you're. uncanny! Secondly, can you give any info or updates on your upcoming projects with: A) David Finch - Wolverine, right? That's the word on the street. David will be going back to our Wolverine story after he finishes lending his outstanding pencils to "Ultimatum" with Jeph Loeb. B) Kenneth Rocafort - anything post Wolverine/Punisher? He's awesome. Kenny is indeed incredible, and I'll hopefully have the chance to work with him on something else in the future. C) Travis Charest - comic art fans everywhere need to know what you and he have planned. You should be hearing more about Travis's plans at Marvel very shortly! Our last question of the day comes from Elias Metaxas, who obviously has the afterlife on their mind: I have a question about Illyana getting her soul back. We saw her younger self dying from the Legacy Virus. When a person dies, their soul supposedly moves on. So, if her soul moved on, even if she picks pieces of it from her friends, how is she going to be complete? Is she going to storm heaven? This is definitely something we'll be addressing in upcoming issues of "X-Infernus," Elias, so keep reading! Thanks for all your support, everyone! Cammo: I'm with C.B. on this one too. I can only add that there's more coming. and that it's gonna be really hot! Every new script I get from C.B. is possibly cooler than the previous one. Cheers everyone! Next week, we have a treat for you - the X-Editors! Ain't X-POSITION grand? How often do you readers get the chance to grill your favorite X-overlord on the books you know and love? Take advantage and send your emails as soon as you can. Put "X-Position" in the subject line to make sure we don't miss your missive underneath the mistletoe!
