Thank you so much for joining this liberating practice of singing and awakening the voice. Singing — opening the voice and clearing the pathway that connects the heart and mind — can be such a powerful way to clear communication, raise our vibrations, unlock our creativity and help us to express what we are here to share with the world. When we open this channel of our voices, and especially when we join our voices together in song and harmony, we create the conditions for more love, creativity, connection, bliss and healing to flow through our lives. This songbook is an ever-growing beautiful collection of some of my favourite mantras, heart songs, medicine songs and melodies collected from many parts of the world Now, you too are a song-carrier! Please feel welcome to use these songs to upli! yourself and share these mantras and melodies far and wide. With love & Gratitude XOXO Francie Love www.PureFlow.Yoga ~ 00 ~ [email protected] Kirtan: Call and Response Kirtan: Call and Response Singing / Chanting Singing / Chanting “The human ability to make and be moved by music is a universal human trait. Like miracles, music is ultimately interconnected with a sense of the sacred, the numinous and the divine. Music not only represent the sacred it also calls it forth and embodies it as well.” — Candace Alcorta The word “Kirtan” literally means to cut. The idea is that we focus on a particular name or deity to cut through the delusion of the mind that makes us feel separate from the source. Here are just a few songs we share: In Bhakti, or the yoga of devotion, we surrender the ego, our intellect, our doubts, judgements & fears, and we harness the power of emotions to help fuel our connection with the divine. In opening our heart in this way we create greater awareness and understanding of our true nature, bringing us contentment, sweetness, compassion, light and energy. Sound has the power to awaken our physical and energetic bodies. Singing reminds us of our essential nature: joyful, open-hearted, centered, blissful. In kirtan or call and response devotional singing, we li! our voices to heal our spirits and raise our vibrations. We use repetition in order to loosen mental chatter, to move from the head to the heart and become one-pointedly focused, just as in meditation. We sing to have a visceral experience of being and to feel the connectedness and joyousness of all things In chanting the names of different deities, we chant not to an external force, but rather we invoke the qualities and essences which they represent, which we also embody. www.PureFlow.Yoga ~ 00 ~ [email protected] Hindu Deities Hindu Deities The Pantheon of Hindu Gods is vast. There are said to be over 30,000 hindu deities. Yet, in fact, Hindus are a monotheistic religion worshiping one God. Hindus believe that there is only one ultimate reality; Brahman. Brahman is a supreme spirit that permeates everything. Brahman is entirely impersonal, and entirely impossible to describe. Everything in the universe is part of Brahman, but Brahman is more than the sum of everything in the universe. The Hindu gods serve as a way in which devotees can see, touch and feel this unknowable God, Brahman. They give the layperson a tangible, knowable aspect of the Supreme Being. Each of the Hindu Gods represents one aspect of Brahman. The God Shiva takes on the destructive aspect of Brahman. The Hindu God Vishnu preserves the working order of the universe. Each Hindu God is one tiny aspect of Supreme Being. www.PureFlow.Yoga ~ 00 ~ [email protected] 10 Hindu Deities to Know for 10 Hindu Deities to Know for Yoga Yoga Deities represent archetypical patterns of thoughts and behaviour that are universally present within our individual psyches. By embodying these qualities in form, we can more easily identify the qualities and characteristics being represented within ourselves, so that we can better understand ourselves, and also live with more intention. Hindu Trimurti - Trinity of Gods: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva Brahma Brahma God of Creation, the Cosmos and all its being Brahma is the first of the Trimurti — the supreme trinity of Gods, along with Vishnu and Shiva Symbolises the mind and intellect as he is the source of all knowledge Brahama is depicted with 4 faces symbolising the completeness of knowledge, and 4 hands symbolizes aspects of the human personality – mind, intellect, ego and consciousness Divine Consort: His divine consort is Saraswati who gives him knowledge to run the universe Mantra to honour the creator and great teacher Gurubrahma Guruvishnu Gurudevo Maheswarah, Guru Saakshaat Param Brahma Tasmai Shri Guravey Namah. Just think, Vishnu sleeps in the cosmic ocean, and the lotus of the universe grows from his navel. On the lotus sits Brahma, the creator. Brahma opens his eyes, and a world comes into being, governed by an Indra. Brahma closes his eyes, and a world goes out of being. The life of a Brahma is 432,000 years. When he dies, the lotus goes back, and another lotus is formed, and another Brahma. Then think of the galaxies beyond galaxies in infinite space, each a lotus, with a Brahma sitting on it, opening his eyes, closing his eyes.” — Joseph Campbell www.PureFlow.Yoga ~ 00 ~ [email protected] Vishnu Vishnu God of Preservation and Sustaining Also know as Narayana, Vasudeva and Har Symbolises Justice, Moral order He is omnipotent, omniscient and encourages kindness Divine Consort: Lakshmi – Goddess of wealth and happines Mantra for liberation, compassion, patience and when you need help remaining at peace in the face of fear or worry: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya The glorious Vishnu is the sole refuge of mortals. They are there to make us understand and express our own capacities. We all have that strength, but we don’t seem to know it. We seem to need to be challenged and tested in order to understand our own capacities. In fact, that is the natural law. If a river flows easily, the water in the river does not express its power. But once you put an obstacle to the flow by constructing a dam, then you can see its strength in the form of tremendous power." – Swami Satchitananda Trinity of supreme Goddesses in Hinduism: Saraswati, Lakshmi, Kali Saraswati Saraswati Goddess of language, knowledge, wisdom, flow, the arts “The Flowing One” — represented as a beautiful woman playing a lute upon a pure white lotus Divine Consort of Brahman, Daughter of shiva and durga Mantra to help make learning easy: Om Aim Hrim Srim Hrim Saraswati Devyai Namaha Only ‘knowledge’ can help us to know the universe, which is vast like an ocean.
