Paper 165. http://epublications.marquette.edu/dissertations_mu/165 A WANT FOR NEWS IN AN OCCUPIED ZONE: NEWSPAPER CONTENT IN OCCUPIED LILLE, ROUBAIX, AND TOURCOING by Candice Addie Quinn, B.A., M.A. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degreee of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin December 2011 ABSTRACT A WANT OF NEWS IN AN OCCUPIED ZONE: NEWSPAPER CONTENT IN OCCUPIED LILLE, ROUBAIX, AND TOURCOING, 1914-1918 Candice Addie Quinn, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2011 The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain exactly what news people in the occupied zone of France received during the First World War, in an attempt to assess the general assumption that the people of occupied France received little to no news. It is certain that the people in the occupied cities of Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing received less news than before the occupation, and most of the news they did receive came from an untrusted source, namely the German occupiers. However, research for this dissertation reveals that the cities at the urban heart of northern France, Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing, received more news than historians previously have believed. Research for this dissertation comprised of reviewing all the sources available in Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcong during the occupation, which included German-controlled newspapers produced in France and Belgium, a short-lived clandestine press, and newspapers published outside the occupied zone covertly imported into the cities. -

1 Louise de Bettignies: een Franse heldin uit de Grote Oorlog Tekst en foto’s: Eric R.J. Wils Inleiding De Noord-Franse stad Lille werd op 13 oktober 1914 na felle strijd door het Duitse leger ingenomen. Er volgde een vier jaar lange bezetting door de Duitsers die vanuit Lille het nabijgelegen front in Frans-Vlaanderen controleerden. Franse burgers besloten geleidelijk aan verzet te gaan plegen tegen de Duitse bezetting. Een van die verzetsmensen was de 34-jarige Louise de Bettignies uit Lille. Zij zou uitgroeien tot het symbool van het Franse verzet uit de Grote Oorlog met de eretitel van ‘Jeanne d’Arc du Nord’. In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op haar leven en de tastbare herinneringen aan haar activiteiten tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Foto van Louise de Bettignies op 25-jarige leeftijd en een na de Eerste Wereldoorlog geschilderd portret met haar opgespelde eretekens en met loopgraven op de achtergrond. Louise de Bettignies Louise Marie Jeanne Henriette de Bettignies werd geboren op 15 juli 1880 in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, een plaats op zo’n 40 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Lille. Ze was het zevende kind van de negen kinderen van het echtpaar Henri en Julienne de Bettignies. Een streng katholiek gezin van gegoede afkomst, hoewel de familie in mindere financiële tijden terecht was gekomen. Haar oudste broer Henri werd tot priester gewijd en ook Louise overwoog haar leven aan het geloof te wijden.1 Het geboortehuis van Louise, in de naar haar genoemde Rue de Louise de Bettignies, staat niet ver van de rivier de Scarpe aan de oostkant van de plaats. -
