Tattersalls Coverage Cont. Americans and Japanese Busy in Newmarket There was no shortage of Americans in buying action yesterday. Leading the way was Reiley McDonald, who paid 280,000gns for Bob McCreery=s homebred Group 3-winning three-year-old filly Middle Club (GB) (Fantastic Light--Anna Oleanda {Ire}, by Old Vic), sold from Richard Hannon=s stable. AShe was a very well-balanced filly and, to my eye, she was as clean as a whis- tle and vetted that way as well,@ McDonald said. AI liked her form, and was looking for something to race on the grass in California for a client and then be bred from one day.@ Reiley McDonald Also heading to the West Coast is Group 1-placed juvenile Lilly (Ire) (Mujadil--Swallow Falls {Ire}, by Lake Coniston {Ire}) (lot 1479), who was knocked down to trainer Jim Cassidy for 210,000gns. Japanese buyers were noticeably strong, and broth- ers Katsumi and Teyuya Yoshida each made significant purchases. Katsumi Yoshida, bidding through veterinar- ian Fumihiko Nakajima, spent 375,000gns on Belle Allure (Ire) (Numerous--Mare Aux Fees {GB}, by Ken- mare {Fr}), winner of the GIII Athenia S. at Belmont, and offered from Cian and Sue Ann Foley=s Islanmore Stud. The five-year-old mare, in foal to Giant=s Cause- way, is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Jukebox Jury (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Patrick Cooper of BBA Ireland was underbidder on the mare, for whom Teruya Yoshida=s Shadai Farm and New Zealand agent Guy Mulcaster also competed. AShe will foal in Japan and we have plenty of choices about which stallion to use [next year],@ Nakajima said. AShe had a lovely pedigree.@ Mulcaster was underbidder at 300,000gns to Teruya Yoshida=s team for Limelight (Dalakhani {Ire}--Last Second {Ire}, by Alzao), a half-sister to Group 1 winner Aussie Rules (Danehill), sold from Prince Faisal Salman=s Denford Stud in Oxfordshire. Failte Isteach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}--Affianced {Ire}, by Erins Isle), a full-sister to G1 winner Soldier Of Fortune (Ire) sold from the Bolger family=s Redmondstown Stud, and was knocked down to Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland with a 340,000gns price tag. AShe=s been bought for a new client in the United Kingdom and is the first filly out of the mare. Pedigree Insights Cont. Thanks to Jersey Town=s narrow victory over his paternal half-brother Haynesfield in the Hill >n= Dale Cigar Mile H., Speightstown now also has a total of four. The WinStar resident is 12 years old, but the fact that he raced until he was six means that he currently has only three crops on the track, compared to Mr. Greeley=s 12 and Elusive Quality=s nine. Of course, he wasn=t the only son of Gone West in the spotlight three days ago, as Canadian Frontier also hit the Grade I target when No Such Word confirmed her toughness and her talent by winning the Gazelle S. Canadian Frontier=s services have been priced at only $3,500 for 2011, which surely makes him attractive. His No Such Word Horsephotos three-year-old daughters from his comparatively small second crop also include Hilda=s Passion, winner of the GII Raven Run S. a month ago. Canadian Frontier stands at Airdrie, alongside another of Gone West=s sons, Proud Citizen. This sire of the champion filly Proud Spell made a bright start in 2007, so his 2009 foal crop should be worth watching next year. Speightstown=s four Grade I/Group1 winners--Lord Shanakill, Mona de Momma, Haynesfield and Jersey Town--are all members of his first crop, which also features the newly retired Munnings (three times a winner at the Grade II level) and the Grade III winners Gemswick Park and Despite The Odds. That=s seven graded winners from a crop of 99 named foals, and that=s not all. This crop also contains the graded-placed performers Reynaldothewizard, Mullins Beach and Cinderella=s Wish, plus the stakes winners Mother Ruth, Country Day, Congor Bay, Fufty Too and French Dip. This adds up to a very eye-catching start by 2004=s champion sprinter, and fulfils the promise of his blood- lines, which helped him make $2,000,000 as a yearling. At present, it looks as though Speightstown=s second crop is going to fall short of this very high standard, as it has so far produced only one graded winner, the Grade III-scorer Bridgetown. It is worth mentioning, though, that, in an injury-hit career, Speightstown did- n=t become a stakes winner until he was six, and three of his four Grade I winners didn=t achieve that status until they were four. I think many young American stallions can be for- given if they experience diminishing returns with their first four crops, as their book size and fee often fall as breeders await proof of their ability. Although Speightstown=s fee held steady at $40,000 in his first four years, the broodmare sires of this year=s yearlings from his fourth crop include quite a few that couldn=t be described as fashionable.

Pedigree Insights Cont. It is only now that his fee has been raised, to $50,000 in 2011, after two years at $35,000. I pointed out last week the number of good winners with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector, but this hasn=t been a widespread feature among Speightstown=s stakes performers, though Congor Bay is inbred 3x3, while Mullins Beach and the 2010 two-year-old Roayh are inbred 3x4. Expect to see more examples, as Mr. Greeley and Elusive Quality have Grade I winners inbred 3x4 and Grand Slam, Western Winter and Elusive Qual- ity all have Grade II winners inbred 3x3. Two of Speightstown=s Grade I winners are out of non-winning mares, Lord Shanakill being out of an unraced daughter of Theatri- cal, and Mona de Momma from a Linkage mare that was unplaced. Haynesfield, though, is out of a graded- stakes mare, and there can be no complaints about the bottom half of Jersey

Dear Breeder, Selling two International Derby winners in one year marks a wonderful milestone for a programme that I have been successfully pursuing for the last decade: buying and selling quality broodmares and broodmare-prospects. With time, the list of their stakes winning offspring is getting longer. Apart from EISHIN FLASH and OCEAN AND BEYOND, the following Stakes Winners emerged after I sold their dams – more often than not for very reasonable prices: TAWQEET (3rd in Group 1 UK St Leger, 2x Group 1 winner in Australia), KIP DEVILLE (4x Group 1 winner in USA, Netjets Breeder’s Cup Mile), SRI PUTRA (Group 2 winner of 3 stakes races in FR and UK), CORSICA (Group 3 winner UK), VIA MEDICI (Group 3 winner in FR), L’ILE D’AVAL (SW in JAP, 3rd Group 1 NHK Mile Cup, TOKYO), ART MARTIAL (SW in FR), GREY SOLDIER (SW in FR), RISING SHADOW (SW in UK), FESTIVALE (SW, Group 3 placed in UK), NANS JOY (SW in GER), POMPEYANO (SW in FR) and ALSACE LORRAINE (SW in UK). Business being now conducted through the Haras de Saint Pair, we have plenty of interesting horses on offer at the upcoming Arqana December sales - broodmares, fillies out of training, foals and even one yearling filly, some of them on behalf of our valued clients.
