The Antioch University New England community is made up of students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds and experience. Students come to our campus from throughout the U.S. and around the world to pursue graduate study and change the world for the better. We share a common commitment to Antioch University’s mission with our colleagues at the other Antioch University campuses in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Seattle, and Yellow Springs, Ohio. All Antioch University campuses are covered by overarching policies; AUNE academic and administrative departments are guided by both these and our own campus policies and procedures. This Student Handbook is a reference for registration, academic, and financial policies and procedures, as well as for campus resources and academic supports. You are responsible for familiarizing yourself with all pertinent policies and procedures and for adhering to them throughout your graduate studies. If you have any questions as to which curriculum you are governed by, please contact the Registrar’s Office. 2 of 204 2012-2013 Degree Requirements: Applied Psychology • MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling • MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a Specialization in Substance Abuse/Addictions Counseling • MA in Marriage and Family Therapy • PhD in Marriage & Family Therapy • MA in Dance Movement Therapy and Counseling • Post-Master's Certificate of Respecialization in Dance Movement Therapy • Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate Program • Applied Behavior Analysis Certificate Program Special Requirements for All Programs in the Department of Applied Psychology Because these are programs of professional preparation, students must meet professional as well as academic standards. The Department of Applied Psychology adheres to the code of ethics of the following organizations: The American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy, The American Counseling Association, the American Mental Health Counselors Association, and the American Dance Therapy Association, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and also requires that students maintain the ability to function in a professional capacity and seek help, when necessary, in managing their personal issues. Questions about personal/professional competence or ethical conduct will be discussed with the student before any administrative action is taken. If resolution is not possible at the departmental level, the issues may be referred for more formal resolution through the Student Grievance Procedure. Policies and procedures employed by the Department of Applied Psychology in evaluating academic, clinical, interpersonal effectiveness, and professional behavior can be found in the Department of Applied Psychology Handbook. Certification and Licensing Graduates of the Department of Applied Psychology may apply for professional credentials, recognizing their level of training and experience. Credentials may be granted by national professional boards/organizations or by the regulatory boards of individual states. Generally there are three levels: Licensure Licensure is a legislatively established form of regulation granted and administered by individual states. It may protect the practice of an occupation as well as the title. This makes it the most desirable, both for public protection (its primary purpose) as well as for members of that profession. Only states may grant licenses. State licensure establishes standards for insurance payers to use in identifying Qualified practitioners. Examples of titles under current usage are licensed clinical mental health counselor, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, licensed alcohol and drug addictions counselor, or creative arts therapist. 3 of 204 Certification Certification is a process of verifying one's professional qualifications. State laws may establish certification; national professional organizations/boards may also certify. Most often this includes a written examination of one's knowledge in the field. The National Board of Certified Counselors offers certification as a National Certified Counselor and several specialty certifications. Certification for drug and alcohol counselors is available both through professional organizations and through state certifying bodies. Certification for Behavior Analysts and Assistant Behavior Analysts is available through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Certifications, memberships, and registries are not generally recognized by insurance payers, but are useful to the public in assessing a practitioner's qualifications. Registry or Roster Registry or roster usually refers to a listing of those using a title or providing a service. Registries can be maintained by the profession or by the state. Some states reQuire rostering in order to practice. Clinical Membership in AAMFT and Registry through the American Dance Therapy Association (American Dance Therapists—Registered) are examples of this level of credential. The state of Vermont, for example, maintains a roster of unlicensed practitioners and requires rostering prior to obtaining post degree supervised hours for licensure. The state of New Hampshire reQuires that applicants have supervision plans filed prior to beginning post-master's practice. The legislature in each state establishes the criteria for licensure and an appointed board determines an individual's eligibility for licensure. The Department has designed its programs to be consistent with the standards of the representative professional organizations. Individual states, many of which base their legislation on professional organization standards, vary as to specific coursework, number of hours of supervised practice, supervisor qualification, and other required criteria. The Department of Applied Psychology recognizes the importance of licensing and certification as part of the preparation for professional practice and offers coursework and internships that allow students to achieve a licensable portfolio. However, because licensure is the sole province of the state regulating bodies, the Department cannot guarantee that students will be licensed or certified. It is the students' responsibility to obtain their state's regulations and to meet specific state reQuirements. This is especially important since some states reQuire that all coursework be completed within the graduate degree program, and will not allow courses to be added at a later date. Additionally, board membership changes and new legislation may alter licensure requirements or interpretation of these reQuirements during a student's program. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of and to meet these requirements. The cost of any coursework over and above that reQuired for the student's program is the responsibility of the student, including the cost of meeting any future changing regulations. Membership in state professional organizations and ongoing contact with licensing boards in their respective states will assist students in assuring their own eligibility for professional licensure. Core faculty members in the Department are available for advice and counsel on licensing matters. 4 of 204 Changing State Licensing Requirements AUNE, while not responsible for actions of external licensing agencies, does intend to support both current masters and doctoral degree students and graduates in meeting changing reQuirements. In doing so, we strive to be fair and consistent to all students. Therefore, if licensing requirements enacted by an external agency exceed the current degree requirements, the following options are available: 1. For current masters or doctoral degree students: additional coursework to satisfy licensing reQuirements (either existing courses or SISs). Current students may use elective credits, or if necessary, study an additional semester at the current per-credit rate. 2. For graduates of masters or doctoral degree programs: the opportunity to enroll as a Continuing Education Student in either the appropriate course or, as an exception, in an SIS, at the following rate: 50% of the Continuing Education master’s per credit tuition. This charge is less than the current per credit fee for matriculated master’s students. MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling 62 credits Students may enter the program in the Fall or Spring semesters. Both entry points require 6 semesters of study and the degree requirements are the same. The first year is an introduction to the foundations of Mental Health Counseling theory and practice. In the second year, students continue to study the fundamentals of the profession, adding a professional seminar and a 600-hour practicum/internship experience which should include a supervised experience in individual, group, and systems interventions.     ABSTRACT RICE, CARL ROSS. Diocletian’s “Great Persecutions”: Minority Religions and the Roman Tetrarchy. (Under the direction of Prof. S. Thomas Parker) In the year 303, the Roman Emperor Diocletian and the other members of the Tetrarchy launched a series of persecutions against Christians that is remembered as the most severe, widespread, and systematic persecution in the Church’s history. Around that time, the Tetrarchy also issued a rescript to the Pronconsul of Africa ordering similar persecutory actions against a religious group known as the Manichaeans. At first glance, the Tetrarchy’s actions appear to be the result of tensions between traditional classical paganism and religious groups that were not part of that system. However, when the status of Jewish populations in the Empire is examined, it becomes apparent that the Tetrarchy only persecuted Christians and Manichaeans. This thesis explores the relationship between the Tetrarchy and each of these three minority groups as it attempts to understand the Tetrarchy’s policies towards minority religions. In doing so, this thesis will discuss the relationship between the Roman state and minority religious groups in the era just before the Empire’s formal conversion to Christianity. It is only around certain moments in the various religions’ relationships with the state that the Tetrarchs order violence.     How did Geography Help Rome Rise to Power The Roman Empire dominated most of Europe and much of Africa and the Middle East for centuries. So great was the empire that it influences geopolitics even today. Often overlooked is the role that geography played in the great city's rise to power. Several geographic advantages helped Rome to grow and ultimately dominate the known world. Protection From Invasion Two mountain ranges, the Alps and the Apennines, helped to protect Rome from invasion. The Apennines divide the Italian peninsula in half and, according to SPQR Online, allowed the Romans to mass forces for counter-attack whenever they were threatened. Any army attempting to attack Rome would be at risk of attack from the other side of the mountains. The Alps, located on the northern border of modern-day Italy, seal off the peninsula from the rest of Europe during winter. This natural roadblock protected Rome from outside invasions by forcing attackers to move slowly through narrow passes, giving the Romans time to respond. Fertile Land Rich volcanic soil makes the Po and Tiber river valleys ideally suited for agriculture. Historian Mike Anderson notes that volcanic ash made the soil near Rome some of the best in all of Europe. Rome attracted new settlers during its rise to power due to its agricultural potential, according to Collins Hill High School teacher Julie Smith. The Roman population grew quickly, thanks to surplus production of grains, olives and other crops. The extra population later helped Rome's military expansion by providing a large supply of troops.

    Uncivil Liberties and Libertines: Empire in Decay MARIANNE MCDONALD 1. I’ve been a film nut from the time my parents would park me in a film theatre as their form of baby-sit- ting. My father invented phone vision, which was an early version of cablevision that allowed us to see newly released movies at home on our round television screen, which looked like an old Bendix washing machine. I wrote one of the earliest books on classics in cinema—and soon after, more books on the topic followed mine.1 I looked forward to seeing the films described in Ancient Rome, many of which I had not seen because I have avoided blood-fest films which invite being described with gore-filled ecstasy. (I have also avoided slasher movies, holocaust movies, and kiddie movies because they disturbed my possibly misguided sensi- bility.) The choices of films in Elena’s Theodorakopoulos’ book are all the work of interesting directors—some better than others, but the quality is, for the most part, high. The writ- ers for all these film scripts are generally outstanding. Good photography also seems to be a given. As we are told in the conclusion, “Whatever the story, spectacle is never far from Rome.” The key to assessing these treatments lies in the interpreta- tion of the portrayal of violence. Are we, the audience, ad- miring it? Calling for it, as we call for it in films by Quentin Tarentino, beginning with Reservoir Dogs (1992), or the se- ries called Saw, the seventh version (2010) now in 3-d?     Roman History THE LEGENDARY PERIOD OF THE KINGS (753 - 510 B.C.) Rome was said to have been founded by Latin colonists from Alba Longa, a nearby city in ancient Latium. The legendary date of the founding was 753 B.C.; it was ascribed to Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of the daughter of the king of Alba Longa. Later legend carried the ancestry of the Romans back to the Trojans and their leader Aeneas, whose son Ascanius, or Iulus, was the founder and first king of Alba Longa. The tales concerning Romulus’s rule, notably the rape of the Sabine women and the war with the Sabines, point to an early infiltration of Sabine peoples or to a union of Latin and Sabine elements at the beginning. The three tribes that appear in the legend of Romulus as the parts of the new commonwealth suggest that Rome arose from the amalgamation of three stocks, thought to be Latin, Sabine, and Etruscan. The seven kings of the regal period begin with Romulus, from 753 to 715 B.C.; Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, from 534 to 510 B.C., the seventh and last king, whose tyrannical rule was overthrown when his son ravished Lucretia, the wife of a kinsman. Tarquinius was banished, and attempts by Etruscan or Latin cities to reinstate him on the throne at Rome were unavailing. Although the names, dates, and events of the regal period are considered as belonging to the realm of fiction and myth rather than to that of factual history, certain facts seem well attested: the existence of an early rule by kings; the growth of the city and its struggles with neighboring peoples; the conquest of Rome by Etruria and the establishment of a dynasty of Etruscan princes, symbolized by the rule of the Tarquins; the overthrow of this alien control; and the abolition of the kingship.

The Roman Empire has made a lasting impact on the world due to its culture, political structure, and military might. The purpose of this project was to examine how the materials and processes used to create the weapons and armour helped to contribute to the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. This was done by analyzing how the Empire was able to successfully integrate new technologies and strategies from the regions the Empire conquered. The focus of this project is on the Empire's military, including the organization of the army, and the tactics and weapons used.
