Europe’s unique karst ecosystem Livanjsko Polje (Livno karst field) in southwest Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the largest periodically flooded karst fields in the world. At an altitude of 700m the site is around 65km long with an average width of 5km, and is almost completely surrounded by mountains reaching a height of 2,000m. Livanjsko Polje has no surface water outflow and all its water drains through numerous sinks and a network of underground karst cavities towards the Cetina River, influencing water availability in neighbouring Croatia. Together with the surrounding mountains, Livanjsko Polje forms a unique geo-morphological and ecological entity with an impressive network of surface and subsurface water bodies including rivers, springs, lakes and oxbowes. The site has seasonally flooded agricultural land and alluvial forest, seasonal marshes and pools and the largest peatland in the Balkans. Uvodvo Jadranskii seobeniseob put je migracijski koridor koji milioni ptica selica iz Evrope i zapadnepadn Azije prate tokom svoje seobe – u jesen sa sje- vera prema jugu odnosno u proljeće u suprotnom smjeru. Tokom ovog putovanja od više hiljada kilometara ptice prelijeću planine Balkana i Jadransko more, prelaze Apeninski poluotok i Sredozem- no more te dolaze do obala Sjeverne Afrike. Neke vrste poput žli- čarke Platalea leucorodia ovdje prezime, ali mnogim vrstama, poput čaplje dangube Ardea purpurea ili patke pupčanice Spatula querque- dula to nije kraj putovanja, već moraju preći pustinju Saharu kako bi se domogle bogatih močvara središnje Afrike, tzv. pojasa Sahel. Tokom duge seobe sve ptice s vremena na vrijeme moraju sletjeti kako bi se odmorile i nahranile prije nastavka svog putovanja. Duž Jadranskog seobenog puta postoji niz važnih odmorišta koje ptice redovno koriste i koje su prave oaze za desetine hiljada selica. To su prije svega preostale velike močvare uz obalu Jadrana, u Italiji i Sjevernoj Africi. Seoba je za ptice prepuna opasnosti – pored ne- stajanja staništa, širenja pustinjskih područja Sahare, ili sudara s električnim vodovima. Jedan od faktora koji najviše ugrožava ptice selice je svakako krivolov i ilegalno uzimanje ptica iz prirode, te tro- vanje.     Livanjsko Polje Ramsar site in Bosnia-Herzegovina 15 April 2009 Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia-Herzegovina celebrates a major new karst Ramsar site On 3 April 2009, in the small town of Livno, the Bosnian authorities, experts from local and international NGOs and different stakeholders celebrated the inscription of Livanjsko Polje (Livno karst field) in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The extensive Livno karst basin is shaped by seasonal floods which provide habitat for up to 70,000 wintering waterbirds, a rare concentration in southeastern Europe. During the dry season, the receding waters disappear through many sinkholes and leave behind lush pastures, large fens, alluvial forests and good-quality arable peatlands that harbour a rich set of species, including in the least accessible areas, probably the most southern breeding pairs of Eurasian cranes (Grus grus), the symbol of the new Ramsar site. And down in the cave bottoms of the secluded sinkholes, a number of endemic fish survive until the next floods. The Ramsar site (45,868 hectares) covers the entire karst field, arguably the largest in the world, stretching over a length of 60 km between the high tops of the Dinaric Alps east of the Adriatic Sea. Proudly, about 120 people gathered in the new Gallery and Museum of the Franciscan Monastery of Livno to celebrate the inclusion of this new type of Ramsar site in the global network, focusing not only on its natural and cultural heritage, but providing also the framework for a new approach of sustainable economic development. StjepanMatkovic, the cantonal minister of agriculture, water management and forestry, explained how his canton intends to profit from the international recognition by the Ramsar Convention, to develop an ecology-based local economy, providing sustainable livelihoods through the production and marketing of high-quality organic products in the polje (floodplain), such as the internationally-known cheese “Livanjski sir”.

Hydromorphological intactness of rivers There are four classes characterising the different levels of hydromorphological intactness: Class 1 shows in blue colour near-natural conditions). Class 2-3 is characterised by slightly to moderately modified status, indicated in light green. Class 4 for river stretches which are extensively altered are orange and class 5 (red) indicates stretches with severely modifications in particular impoundments. Lakes and rivers outside of the project areas are visualised in dark blue. Bosnia and Herzegowina is entirely within the geographical Balkan and hosts all major tributaries of Sava river. In particularly the upper Una and the lower Vrbas as well as lower Drina fall still in the highest class, which is remarkable as most of the lower courses of comparable rivers in Europe are subject of strong changes. The major karst and Mediterranean river, the Neretva is altered by a chain of major hydropower plants. On the other side the headwaters and some of the lower tributaries provides still very good hydromorphological conditions (compare e.g. the cover image, water falls on Kravica). Even the densely settled Bosna valley still provides good to moderate hydromorphological conditions (still entirely free flowing, which has significance for sturgeon and Danube salmon populations).
