Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, All are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: All are welcome, ………………… 4 The Greeting The Bishop of Wolverhampton, the Rt. Revd. Clive Gregory greets the people. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All: Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one body and one spirit. All: There is one hope to which we were called, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, All: one God and Father of all. Peace be with you All: and also with you. The Collect The Bishop introduces a period of silent prayer. God of truth, help us to keep your law of love and to walk in ways of wisdom, that we may find true life in Jesus Christ your Son. All: Amen. 5 The Liturgy of the Word New Testament Reading 6 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For all of us must appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. 14 For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15 And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. 17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17 New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 6 Hymn Please remain seated. Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness shining. Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. Shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine! Fill this land with the Father’s glory. Blaze, Spirit, blaze! Set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow! Flood the nations with grace and mercy. Send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light. Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance. By the blood, I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness. Ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here, may our lives tell your story. 7 The Gospel Reading Please stand. Cantor: Alleluia…. (x4) I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord. No one comes to the Father except through me. All: Alleluia…..(x4) Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark. All: Glory to you, O Lord. 26 He also said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’ 30 He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’ 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. Mark 4:26-34, New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised This is the Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, O Christ. 8 The Sermon Please be seated. The Bishop of Wolverhampton, the Rt. Revd. Clive Gregory The Liturgy of Initiation The Presentation of the Candidates Please remain seated as the candidates are presented to the congregation. The Bishop asks the candidates for confirmation who have been baptised: Have you been baptised in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit? I have. The Bishop asks all the candidates: Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ? I am. The Bishop addresses the whole congregation: Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their life in Christ? All: With the help of God, we will. Testimony by a candidate may follow. 9 The Decision The Paschal candle is lit and the Bishop addresses all the candidates and all those who are renewing their baptismal promises: In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ.
