  • About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
    About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization.

New research activities, launched in the last few years, indicate that these figures may be significantly higher than generally assumed. Hitherto, frogs of this new species were traditionally misidentified as Phrynopus peruvianus. The new species is known only from elevations of 3270–3450 m in the vicinity of the type locality in the Cordillera de Paucartambo, Departamento Cusco, Peru. It is unique within Psychrophrynella in having a marked, oblique inner tarsal tubercle. The geographically closest species Psychrophrynella bagrecito Lynch, also possesses a tarsal tubercle. In addition, the comprehensive phylogenetic studies of Heinicke et al. (2007) and Hedges et al. (2008) plus other, more partial studies (e. g., De la Riva et al., 2008; Padial et al., 2007; 2008) have led to a drastic taxonomic rearrangement of the whole group.

The taxonomic status of the population ofRhacophorus angulirostris from West Sumatra is reassessed. This record was based on five specimens that had been collected in Padang, West Sumatra, more than a century ago, are stored in the collection of the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Austria, and were assigned to R. angulirostris from Borneo by Inger (1966). Reexamination revealed that the specimens from Sumatra share only few diagnostic characters with R. angulirostris from Borneo. Bornean and Sumatran specimens differ in the presence of a dermal projection at the tibio-tarsal articula- tion, male body size, snout shape, shape of the canthus rostralis and the supratympanic fold, extent of webbing between the fingers, size of the thenar tubercle, position of the nostrils, internarial distance, the eye-to-nostril distance, size of eye and tympanum, and size and position of the dentigerous processes of the vomers. The specimens from Padang were compared to all other Southeast Asian members of the genus and found to represent a distinct species, herein described as new, that appears to be not even closely related to R. angulirostris. Because the only record of R. angulirostris from Sumatra was based on these specimens, the geographic distribution of R.

Fisher Supplemental Information Taxonomic Notes Genera were assigned to families for summarization (Table 1 in main text) and analysis (Table 2 in main text) based on the most recent available comprehensive taxonomic references (Frost et al. 2006, Frost 2008, Frost 2009, Frost 2011). We chose recent family designations to explore patterns of Bd susceptibility and occurrence because these classifications were based on both genetic and morphological data, and hence may more likely yield meaningful inference. Some North American species were assigned to genus according to Crother (2008), and dendrobatid frogs were assigned to family and genus based on Grant et al. (2006). Eleutherodactylid frogs were assigned to family and genus based on Hedges et al. (2008); centrolenid frogs based on Cisneros-Heredia et al. (2007). For the eleutherodactylid frogs of Central and South America and the Caribbean, older sources count them among the Leptodactylidae, whereas Frost et al. (2006) put them in the family Brachycephalidae. More recent work (Heinicke et al. 2007) suggests that most of the genera that were once “Eleutherodactylus” (including those species currently assigned to the genera Eleutherodactylus, Craugastor, Euhyas, Phrynopus, and Pristimantis and assorted others), may belong in a separate, or even several different new families. Subsequent work (Hedges et al. 2008) has divided them among three families, the Craugastoridae, the Eleutherodactylidae, and the Strabomantidae, which were used in our classification.

Community structure and habitat associations of amphibians and reptiles on both rainy and dry seasons of six habitat types of three sites in Gunung Ciremai National Park, West Java were investigated in March and October 2008. The data of herpetofauna was obtained by opportunistic searches. Herpetofaunal diversity for each habitat was determined by using Shannon Wiener index, the species abundance per unit area was calculated by using Margalef’s index, and the homogeneity of distribution of species in relation to other species in a sampled per unit area was evaluated using Evenness index. The similarity in herpetofauna communities among habitat types was determined using Sorensen’s coefficient, meanwhile the Jaccard’s index was used to estimate similarities in habitat utilization. Thus, both community similarities and habitat utilization displayed in cluster dendrogram. A total of 46 amphibian and reptile taxa were recorded, comprising 16 anurans, 22 lizards and 8 snakes. Of the total taxa, four anurans are endemic and unusual specimens probably new in sciences referred to the genus Cyrtodactylus and Eutropis.

Lokasi resor ini berdampingan dengan kampung Citalahab. Pusat Penelitian Biologi, Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia dan beberapa institusi lainnya telah melakukan penelitian secara intensif mengenai keanekaragaman fauna TNGHS dari stasiun ini. Studi ini memformulasi daftar keanekaragaman fauna di sekitar stasiun penelitian Cikaniki dan Citalahab, TNGHS dari berbagai sumber, seperti survei lapangan, koleksi museum (Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense), publikasi ilmiah, dan laporan. Studi dilakukan dari bulan Oktober 2019 hingga Oktober 2020. Survei lapangan terkini dilakukan pada 8-10 Oktober 2019 di bawah skema program Jungle Survival dan Manajemen Koleksi Biologi 2019. Secara keseluruhan, terdapat 821 spesies fauna tercatat di kawasan Cikaniki-Citalahab, yang terdiri dari 48 spesies moluska, lima spesies Malacostraca, 523 spesies serangga, 22 spesies Actinopterygii, 63 spesies amfibi dan reptil, 115 spesies Aves, dan 45 spesies mamalia.
