Phylogenetic signal was highly congruent and complementary between mtDNA and nuclear genes. In addition to single-nucleotide variation, shared deletions in nuclear introns supported one basal and two peripheral clades within the Aquilini. Monophyly of the Aquilini relative to other birds of prey was confirmed. However, all polytypic genera within the tribe, Spizaetus, Aquila, Hieraaetus, turned out to be non-monophyletic. Old World Spizaetus and Stephanoaetus together appear to be the sister group of the rest of the Aquilini. Spiza- stur melanoleucus and Oroaetus isidori axe nested among the New World Spizaetus species and should be merged with that genus. The Old World 'Spizaetus' species should be assigned to the genus Nisaetus (Hodgson, 1836). The sister species of the two spotted eagles (Aquila clanga and Aquila pomarina) is the African Long-crested Eagle (Lophaetus occipitalis). -

The Melagiris form part of an almost unbroken stretch of forests connecting Bannerghatta National Park (which forms its north-western boundary) to the forests of Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary - Karnataka (which forms its southern boundary, separated by the river Cauvery), and further to Biligirirangan hills and Sathyamangalam forests. The northern and western parts are comparatively plain and is part of the Mysore plateau. The average elevation in this region is 500-1000 m. Ground sinks to 300m in the valley of the Cauvery and the highest point is the peak of Guthereyan at 1395.11 m. Red sandy loam is the most common soil type found in this region. Small deposits of alluvium are found along Cauvery and Chinnar rivers and Kaoline is found in some areas near Jowlagiri. The temperature ranges from 10°C ± 35°C. South-west monsoon is fairly active mostly in the northern areas, but north-east monsoon is distinctly more effective in the region. -

The Evolution of Nest Construction in Swallows (Hirundinidae) Is Associated with the Decrease of Clutch Size

HENEBERG A b s t r a c t : Variability of the nest construction in swallows (Hirundinidae) is more diverse than in other families of oscine birds. I compared the nest-building behaviour with pooled data of clutch size and overall hatching success for 20 species of swallows. The clutch size was significantly higher in temperate cavity-adopting swallow species than in species using other nesting modes including species breeding in evolutionarily advanced mud nests (P<0.05) except of the burrow-excavating Bank Swallow. Decrease of the clutch size during the evolution of nest construction is not compensated by the increase of the overall hatching success. K e y w o r d s : Hirundinidae, nest construction, clutch size, evolution Birds use distinct methods to avoid nest-predation: active nest defence, nest camouflage and concealment or sheltered nesting. While large and powerful species prefer active nest-defence, swallows and martins usually prefer construction of sheltered nests (LLOYD 2004). The nests of swallows vary from natural cavities in trees and rocks, to self-exca- vated burrows to mud retorts and cups attached to vertical faces. Much attention has been devoted to the importance of controlling for phylogeny in com- parative tests (HARVEY & PAGEL 1991), including molecular phylogenetic studies of swallows (WINKLER & SHELDON 1993). Interactions between the nest-construction va- riability and the clutch size, however, had been ignored. -

Box 643, Weipa, Queensland 4874 Summary A White-throated Nightjar Eurostopodus mystacalis was photographed flying low above the sea in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, at ~1600 h on 25 August 2010. Sightings of Nightjars behaving similarly in the same area in the days before obtaining the conclusive photographs suggest that they were on southerly migration, returning from their wintering sojourn in New Guinea to their breeding grounds in Australia. Other relevant sightings are given, and the significance of this behaviour is discussed. The evidence Observations in 2010 At 0900 h on 21 August 2010, whilst conducting a fishing charter by boat in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the western coast of Cape York, Queensland, BB observed an unusual bird flying low over the sea. Although his view was sufficient to excite curiosity, it did not enable identification. Twice on 23 August 2010, the skipper of a companion vessel, who had been alerted to the sighting, had similar experiences. Then at 1600 h on 25 August 2010, BB saw ‘the bird’ again. In order to determine its identity, he followed it, which necessitated his boat reaching speeds of 20–25 knots. During the pursuit, which lasted 10–15 minutes, he obtained over 15 photographs and a video recording. He formed the opinion that the bird was a nightjar, most probably a White-throated Nightjar Eurostopodus mystacalis. -

This paper is a result of such a survey conducted in December 2012 supplemented by relevant prior work in this area. Anamalais sub-cluster in southern Western Ghats (Nair 1991; Das Munnar Hills (10.083°–10.333°N, 77.000°–77.617°E), et al. 2006). Anamudi (2685 m), the highest peak in peninsular forming part of the High Ranges of Western Ghats, also known as India, lies in these hills inside Eravikulam National Park (NP).
