NOTE ZOOS' PRINT JOURNAL 20(11): 2076-2078 The status of the birds are catagorized as residential (R), migrant (M), resident migrant (RM), winter migrant (WM ), breeding BIRDS IN AND AROUND NANDED CITY, migrant ( BM) and passage migrant (PM). Abundance of birds MAHARASHTRA was catagorised as common (C), uncommon (U), rare (r) and occasional (O). 1 2 3 A.N. Kulkarni , V.S. Kanwate and V.D. Deshpande Observations: The study reveals the occurance of 151 species of birds belonging to 44 families and 16 orders. Table 1 details 1, 3 P.G. Department of Zoology, Science College, Nanded, the scientific and common names, status and occurrence of the Maharashtra 431605, India 2 Department of Zoology, V.N. College, Cidco, Nanded, Maharashtra birds. The list includes 86 species of resident birds, 32 species 431603, India resident migrants, 19 species winter migrants, 10 species Email: [email protected] migrants, two species breeding migrants and two species passage migrants. Fifteen species, namely, Cattle Egret, Red- wattled Lapwing, Blue Rock Pigeon, Eurasian collared-Dove, Nanded district in South East of Maharashtra is situated on the Rufous collared-Dove, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Greater Coucal, bank of river Godavari. It has varied habitats like river, dams, Brainfever Bird, House Swift, Small Bee-eater, Common Swallow, lakes, mountain strips and agriculture fields. The predominating Black Drango, Common Myna, Red-vented Bulbul, White- vegetation is typically dry deciduous type (Champion & Jeth, throated Munia, were common in all the study stations. 1968). Common flowering tree species are Acacia arabica, Maximum number of birds were recorded at Sitakhadi forest (81 Melia azadirachta, Ficus religiosa, Mangifera indica, Ficus species) where as only 46 species of birds were recorded at bengalensis, Tectona grandis, Zizyphus jujuba, Vitex negundo, Science College Campus. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. The Melagiris form part of an almost unbroken stretch of forests connecting Bannerghatta National Park (which forms its north-western boundary) to the forests of Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary - Karnataka (which forms its southern boundary, separated by the river Cauvery), and further to Biligirirangan hills and Sathyamangalam forests. The northern and western parts are comparatively plain and is part of the Mysore plateau. The average elevation in this region is 500-1000 m. Ground sinks to 300m in the valley of the Cauvery and the highest point is the peak of Guthereyan at 1395.11 m. Red sandy loam is the most common soil type found in this region. Small deposits of alluvium are found along Cauvery and Chinnar rivers and Kaoline is found in some areas near Jowlagiri. The temperature ranges from 10°C ± 35°C. South-west monsoon is fairly active mostly in the northern areas, but north-east monsoon is distinctly more effective in the region. -

They belong to the sparrow family Passeridae and their scientific name is Passer domesticus. The Latin word Passeridae and English word sparrow is the term used for small active birds and the Latin word domesticus means "belonging to the house". They are common birds found in most parts of the world like in most of Europe and Asia and the Mediterranean region. There are 5 Species found in India these are House Sparrow, Spanish Sparrow, Sind Sparrow, Russet Sparrow and Eurasian Sparrow. Humans and sparrows……. The House Sparrows are believed to have been closely associated with humans around 10,000 years ago. The House Sparrow is considered to be beneficial to humans especially by eating insect pests. It has even been mentioned in our mythologies and folklores, along with the common crow, eagles, vultures and other birds, which used to build their nest close to human dwellings. The bird names have been listed and classified according to the scientific codes. An etymological study has been presented for scientific names, including genus and species. If it was possible we have provided the etymology of Persian and Gilaki native names of the birds. According to our best knowledge, there was no previous report gathering and describing the ornithological fauna of this part of the world. Gilan province, due to its meteorological circumstances and the richness of its animal life has harbored a wide range of animals. Therefore, the nomenclature system used by the natives for naming the animals, specially birds, has a prominent stance in this country. Many of these local and dialectal names of the birds have been entered into standard language of the country (Persian language). The study has presented majority of comprehensive list of the Gilaki bird names, categorized according to the ornithological classifications. -

FORKTAIL 13 (1998): 97-107 Taxonomy of the Mirafra assamica complex PER ALSTROM Four taxa are recognised in the Mirafra assamicacomplex: assamica Horsfield, affinis Blyth, microptera Hume, and marionae Baker; subsessorDeignan is considered to be a junior synonym of marionae. These four taxa differ in morphology and especially in vocalizations. Both assamicaand microptera have diagnostic song-flights, while affinis and marionae have similar song-flights. There are also differences in other behavioural aspects and habitat between assamicaand the others. On account of this, it is suggested that Mirafra assamicasensu lato be split into four species:M assamica,M affinis,M micropteraand M marionae.English names proposed are: Bengal Bushlark, ] erdon' s Bushlark, Burmese Bushlark and Indochinese Bushlark, respectively. The Rufous-winged Bushlark Mirafra assamica Horsfield (including the holotype) on my behalf in the Smithsonian is usually divided into five subspecies: assamica Horsfield Institution, Washington, D.C., USA. I have examined c. (1840), affinis Blyth (1845), microptera Hume (1873), 20 specimens of ceylonensis, though I have not compared it subsessor Deignan (1941), and marionae Baker (1915) in detail with affinis, and I have only measured four (Peters 1960, Howard and Moore 1991). One further specimens (of which two were unsexed). For all taxa, taxon, ceylonensis Whistler (1936), is sometimes recognized, measurements of wing length (with the wing flattened and but following Ripley (1946) and Vaurie (1951) most recent stretched; method 3, Svensson 1992), tail length, bill length authors treat it as a junior synonym of affinis. They are highly sensitive to even minor perturbation in ecosystems. Documentation of avian assemblages in different ecosystems is, therefore, becoming increasingly important from environmental monitoring perspective. In absence of comprehensive account of birds of Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary, West Bengal, India, we made an attempt to document the birds thriving in this protected area. A total of 102 species of birds belonging to 13 orders and 46 families were recorded during the study period (June 2013 – May 2016). Maximum number of species belong to the order Passeriformes (49 species) and minimum under order Anseriformes (1 species). Among the total bird species, 83 species (81.37%) were resident, 15 species (14.71%) were winter visitor, three species (2.94%) were summer visitor and one species (0.98%) was passage migrant. We noted 38 species of birds (including 36 residents and two summer visitors) to breed within the sanctuary. Analysis of feeding guild data revealed that 46.08% were insectivore, 22.55% were carnivore, 15.69% were omnivore, 6.86% were granivore, 5.88% were frugivore, 1.96% were nectarivore and 0.98% were herbivore. Grey-headed Fish Eagle (Icthyophaga ichthyaetus) and Red- breasted Parakeet (Psittacula alexandri) are two Near Threatened (NT) species designated by IUCN. -

Box 643, Weipa, Queensland 4874 Summary A White-throated Nightjar Eurostopodus mystacalis was photographed flying low above the sea in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, at ~1600 h on 25 August 2010. Sightings of Nightjars behaving similarly in the same area in the days before obtaining the conclusive photographs suggest that they were on southerly migration, returning from their wintering sojourn in New Guinea to their breeding grounds in Australia. Other relevant sightings are given, and the significance of this behaviour is discussed. The evidence Observations in 2010 At 0900 h on 21 August 2010, whilst conducting a fishing charter by boat in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the western coast of Cape York, Queensland, BB observed an unusual bird flying low over the sea. Although his view was sufficient to excite curiosity, it did not enable identification. Twice on 23 August 2010, the skipper of a companion vessel, who had been alerted to the sighting, had similar experiences. Then at 1600 h on 25 August 2010, BB saw ‘the bird’ again. In order to determine its identity, he followed it, which necessitated his boat reaching speeds of 20–25 knots. During the pursuit, which lasted 10–15 minutes, he obtained over 15 photographs and a video recording. He formed the opinion that the bird was a nightjar, most probably a White-throated Nightjar Eurostopodus mystacalis. -
