THANKS, ADAM 3/14/07 Hi Adam, I finally had the chance to read "Elvis & Me by Priscilla and thought I'd share a little info with you. As I read the book, I really find it hard to believe that Priscilla would put some of the information she has in the book if Elvis was alive. There is quite a bit of their intimacy moments in the book and knowing what I've read about the two of them, it's hard to believe Priscilla even sharing this information. All I know is that I have very mixed feelings about the whole Elvis thing. Is it a money gimmick and/or just to keep Elvis and themselves in the limelight light. I do know that people are out to make a buck off of him. Some of those addresses on People Search are phony and they shouldn't be allowed to rip people off by using his middle initial and date of birth. -

Welcome to My World: Researching the Role of Personal Narrative and Affective Presence at Graceland Mariruth Leftwich Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the regulations of the Institute of Education, University of London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute of Education, Faculty of Children and Learning 2012 1 Thesis Abstract This study explores the visitor experience at one of the world's most famous historic houses, Graceland, Elvis Presley's home. The research methodology prioritises the visitor's voice, examining the impact of the Graceland experience on visitor perception. Particular attention is paid to theories of personal narrative and affective presence as interpretive devices. Personal Meaning Maps from 170 visitors form the core data and provide evidence of the profound conceptual changes that occur in visitors' perceptions of Elvis. Visitors consistently describe Elvis as a 'real' person, with personal characteristics such as humility and generosity proving more memorable than his fame or career. The Graceland tour is designed for visitors to connect with Elvis in an affective manner, evoking emotions and relying on narratives of family and nostalgic discourses. This succeeds in providing visitors with an experience that challenges and extends their pre-visit views of Elvis as the 'King of Rock and Roll.' The ability to change visitor perception is linked to the quality of the experience, as Adams et al. (2003) suggests, 'the better the experience, the greater the change' (p. 22). The transformations documented at Graceland prompted investigation, searching for indicators of quality interpretation through analysis of the audio tour content and visitor photographs. This examination reveals a set of interpretive practices potentially useful for other historic properties, including the contextualising of space through personal accounts, the introduction of emotive media, and a reliance on a narrative that is personal rather than objective. -

Alice Fugate Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies Rhodes College 2016 ! !1 Introduction: Fame and Familiarity Remember that time you were shopping in the same store that hip hop artist Usher was browsing in? When you met fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer at a wedding reception? Or the time you asked Roger Moore (a.k.a. James Bond) for directions when you got lost in London and he told you “You’re in for a hell of a walk.” These are some of my parents’ encounters with fame. These chance encounters became stories they would tell for years afterward around the dinner table, at parties, or while on a walk. Many of us have had similar experiences, and it’s all the same: you were living in the familiar, and suddenly fame walked through the door. Now imagine living next door to Elvis Presley in 1956. 1034 Audubon Drive was Elvis Presley’s first purchased house in Memphis, Tennessee, bought in 1956 for his parents with the royalties of “Heartbreak Hotel.” The King only lived there for thirteen months, but from May, 1956 to May, 1957 he became Elvis, at least the early Elvis as the world knows him. While living here, he recorded “Hound Dog,” appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, bought his mother a pink Cadillac, and played touch football with the neighborhood kids. Audubon Drive in the 1950’s was a new neighborhood right at the edge of Memphis — the suburbs. It was an upper-middle class, almost all-white neighborhood, full of successful professionals and tons of children. -

It has been performed by dozens of churches in over ten different states. I would love to have seen the version performed in San Francisco area! One of the ongoing requests made to me was to write a sequel so that the audience would learn whose daughter the young woman is. I finally finished that script, “Madeline Gets Married” and I went back and expanded the original Bobbie June script. I needed to add characters and situations that would make sense for the sequel. So, this script is the “Director’s Cut”, an extended version of Aunt Bobbie June’s Tea Room. It was performed in October, 2004 at Brookwood Baptist Church to a sell out crowd.
