The Legend of Moondyne Joe These notes to accompany The Legend of Moondyne Joe provide suggestions for classroom activities based on or linked to the book's text and illustrations and highlight points for discussion. Synopsis Not known for gunfights or robbing banks, it was the convict bushranger Moondyne Joe’s amazing ability to escape every time he was placed behind bars that won him fame and the affection of the early settlers. Wearing a kangaroo-skin cape and possum-skin slippers, he found freedom in the wooded valleys and winding creeks at Moondyne Hills. Joe was harmless, except possibly to a few settlers whose horses had a ‘mysterious’ way of straying. When blamed for the disappearance of a farmer’s prize stallion the colonial authorities were soon to find out that there wasn’t a jail that could hold Joe! On Writing “The Legend of Moondyne Joe” By Mark Greenwood I wanted to create a fun story, accurate in detail, about a strength of spirit that was nurtured by life in the new colony. A book that would bring to life a legend from our colourful history. I believe by having an appreciation of their own history, children better understand themselves, their community and their culture. The Legend of Moondyne Joe aims to encourage interest in our convict history to a wide audience of middle to upper primary and lower secondary age children. The picture book format allows illustrations to bring characters and settings to life. Illustrations help readers to develop a feel for bygone eras that words alone cannot portray.

We gratefully acknowledge our collaboration with Monash University, the National Museum of Australia and all the cultural institutions featured in this project. Join us on an Australian Journey Australian Journey is designed for anyone, anywhere interested in Australia. Exploring the themes of Land, People, and Nation, it offers a road map to our country’s Past, Present, and Future. Australian Journey will take you the length and breadth of the continent, and across almost four billion years of history, in 12 short and engaging episodes. And every episode uses objects to reveal the stories of a nation. What do these pieces of the past tell us about their time, their purpose and their maker? Some of the objects we have chosen are famous, iconic or familiar; others obscure, even quirky. But all our objects tell a story and all find a place in the National Museum of Australia. Australian Journey is presented by Professor Bruce Scates and Dr Susan Carland. Resources for the Journey This booklet recommends a range of resources to complement each episode of Australian Journey. School teachers, international university students and the general public can use this guide to find texts, websites, podcasts, films, and literature to augment teaching and learning about the Australian nation. A collection of written, audio, internet and visual sources, this booklet will enable you to extend your knowledge of Australian history and engage further in the historical debates around the objects featured in Australian Journey.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION Some of the books I write happen because somebody asked me to write them. Those are always fun, but my favourite books are the ones that begin as an itch of curiosity which becomes a temporary obsession that erupts into an essay which later balloons out into a whole book. This curiosity-driven book happened because I like to take breaks when I am driving. On the road between Sydney and Canberra, my usual break points are one or more of a coffee cart, a book barn, a part of the old highway, and the town of Collector, which has a pub with nice food. Stretching my legs outside the pub one day, I spotted a curious memorial. I wandered over and found that it commemorates the shooting of Constable Samuel Nelson by the outlaw John Dunn in 1865. I like to think of myself as fairly well-informed about The memorial to Constable Samuel Nelson, Collector, NSW. 1 NOT YOUR USUAL BUSHRANGERS Australian history, but while Dunn’s name rang a bell, I had no other knowledge of him. That was the itch of curiosity that started me off. Looking into the matter at home, I learned that Dunn was a bushranger from the high period of bushranging, which ran from about 1860 to 1880, and he rode with people I certainly knew about. All the same, he wasn’t one of the usual small bunch of bushrangers that the Australian-in-the-street knows about. I wondered how many other bushrangers there were, and that began the temporary obsession that ended up giving me, and you, this book.

  • Strutt's Australia
Heroes and villains: Strutt’s Australia FREE EXHIBITION 14 JUL – 23 OCT 2016 Young explorer’s trail Recording history In the 1850s, photography had only just been invented. Photographs were not widely available as a means to record events or famous people and we rely on painters to help us imagine what life was like. William Strutt (1825–1915) was an English-born painter who immigrated to Australia when he was 25 years old. Having studied art in Paris, he arrived in Melbourne at the beginning of an extraordinary decade, when many important historical events occurred. Strutt’s paintings are a valuable resource to tell us about life in the colony of Melbourne, not long after it began. William Strutt William Strutt, Mangarie Taranaki, New Zealand, 1856 drawing, pencil and wash, National Library of Australia Imagine no photographs exist of Melbourne. How would you describe Melbourne to someone who had never been here, without using photographs? Hazards of the bush Strutt’s paintings depict the hardships and hazards of living in Australia, as well as the fear and amazement that the natural world generated in the colony and abroad. Only six months after Strutt arrived, the biggest bushfire experienced by settlers in Victoria occurred. Can you find Strutt’s famous Black Thursday painting in the exhibition? It took him three years to paint, and he kept it for 20 years before he was able to sell it. Look at the eyes of the animals and the people in the painting. What do you think they are feeling? Half of the painting is devoted to the sky.
