150 YEARS OF HISTORY - THE FAMOUS – 1860- BUSHRANGER HOTEL – Auction 1pm Saturday 11th October 2014. On 27th January 1865 Constable Samuel Nelson was shot and killed out the front by John Dunn when the Ben Hall gang raided the then Commercial Hotel, to be forever after known as the Bushranger Hotel in Collector. The 26th January 2015 is Australia Day… A day later… The Bushranger Hotel honours another special chapter of Australian history… the very day after... In just a few months time… The 27th January 2015 will mark 150 years of this most tragic event at Collector. Michael Maxwell is selling the Bushranger Hotel for Norm & Dianne Bett’s and invites any Investor, Developer, Businessman, Publican and or Australian Historian etc to purchase this stunning artefact and National Treasure on Saturday 11th October 2014. Months in advance of the necessary preparations required to properly honour Constable Samuel Nelson and his valiant attempt to arrest Ben Hall and his gang. Outside and on the grounds the successful bidder will recreate the event no doubt and firmly re-establish the events together with the community of Collector NSW. The monument to Constable Samuel Nelson will also no doubt also be wet with the tears and cheers of all gathering. It is said that Ben Hall regretted the passing of Constable Nelson that he had shouted words of warning and remorse later having also washed his conscience inside the Bushranger Hotel… It is a tribute to him also to be found standing here… for any man to consider his actions regrets and the loss of life and love that began elsewhere. -

Scenic and Historic Drives Route 2 Explorers and Bushrangers
SCENIC AND HISTORIC DRIVES ROUTE 2 EXPLORERS AND BUSHRANGERS DRIVE DESCRIPTION Hamilton Hume famously began his trek south from his property near Gunning in 1824, however he also explored extensive parts of the Goulburn Plains. Likewise, bushrangers including Ben Hall terrorized travelers along these key transport routes. Explore from Gunning to Collector and get a sense of this history. POINTS OF INTREST Gunning Your journey back to the time of the explorers and bushrangers starts in the historic village of Gunning. Explorer Hamilton Hume established a sheep property here in 1821, and soon after the area became an official settlement. In 1824 Hume and Captain William Hovell set off on their famous expedition south to what is now Melbourne. In 1840, bushrangers Thomas Whitton and his ruthless gang held up the town. Hamilton Hume’s brother, John Kennedy Hume and a group of local men faced up to the bushrangers, but John Hume was killed. You can find his grave, and those of others from this time, in the Gunning General Cemetery at the end of Wombat Street. Gunning features a whole range of interesting historical buildings and sites dating from this time onwards, featured in the self-guided Heritage Walk of Gunning. Fish River After exploring Gunning’s rich history, and maybe enjoying refreshments in one of the delightful cafés, it is time to head east out of town on the Cullerin Road. Around 5 km out of Gunning you will find a commemorative memorial erected in 1924, marking the start of Hume and Hovell’s expedition in 1824. -

Ghosts of Ned Kelly: Peter Carey’s True History and the myths that haunt us Marija Pericic Master of Arts School of Communication and Cultural Studies Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne November 2011 Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts (by Thesis Only). Abstract Ned Kelly has been an emblem of Australian national identity for over 130 years. This thesis examines Peter Carey’s reimagination of the Kelly myth in True History of the Kelly Gang (2000). It considers our continued investment in Ned Kelly and what our interpretations of him reveal about Australian identity. The paper explores how Carey’s departure from the traditional Kelly reveals the underlying anxieties about Australianness and masculinity that existed at the time of the novel’s publication, a time during which Australia was reassessing its colonial history. The first chapter of the paper examines True History’s complication of cultural memory. It argues that by problematising Kelly’s Irish cultural memory, our own cultural memory of Kelly is similarly challenged. The second chapter examines Carey’s construction of Kelly’s Irishness more deeply. It argues that Carey’s Kelly is not the emblem of politicised Irishness based on resistance to imperial Britain common to Kelly narratives. Instead, he is less politically aware and also claims a transnational identity. The third chapter explores how Carey’s Kelly diverges from key aspects of the Australian heroic ideal he is used to represent: hetero-masculinity, mateship and heroic failure. Carey’s most striking divergence comes from his unsettling of gender and sexual codes. -

Synopsis Not known for gunfights or robbing banks, it was the convict bushranger Moondyne Joe’s amazing ability to escape every time he was placed behind bars that won him fame and the affection of the early settlers. Wearing a kangaroo-skin cape and possum-skin slippers, he found freedom in the wooded valleys and winding creeks at Moondyne Hills. Joe was harmless, except possibly to a few settlers whose horses had a ‘mysterious’ way of straying. When blamed for the disappearance of a farmer’s prize stallion the colonial authorities were soon to find out that there wasn’t a jail that could hold Joe! On Writing “The Legend of Moondyne Joe” By Mark Greenwood I wanted to create a fun story, accurate in detail, about a strength of spirit that was nurtured by life in the new colony. A book that would bring to life a legend from our colourful history. I believe by having an appreciation of their own history, children better understand themselves, their community and their culture. The Legend of Moondyne Joe aims to encourage interest in our convict history to a wide audience of middle to upper primary and lower secondary age children. The picture book format allows illustrations to bring characters and settings to life. Illustrations help readers to develop a feel for bygone eras that words alone cannot portray. -

The obsession with identity in Australia betrays longstanding uncertainty. It is not difficult to interpret in this uncertainty a replaying of the deeper insecurities surrounding the settler community's legal and more broadly cultural claims to the land. Such insecurities are typically understood negatively. In contrast, this thesis accepts the uncertainty of identity as an activating principle, appropriate to any interpretation of the narratives and themes that inform what it means to be Australian. Fundamental to this uncertainty is a provisionality in the post-colonial experience of place that is papered over by misleadingly coherent spatial narratives that stem from the imperial inheritance of Australian mythology. Place is a model for the tension between the coherence of mythic narratives and the actual rhizomic formlessness of daily life. Place is the ‘ground’ of that life, but an ambivalent ground. An Ambivalent Ground approaches postcolonial Australia as a densely woven text. In this text, stories that describe the founding of a nation are enveloped by other stories, not so well known, that work to transform those more familiar narratives. -

It forms part of the Accessible Lifelong Learning (ALL) Project, a joint partnership between Macquarie University and the State Library of New South Wales. Journeys in Time is designed to provide scholarly access to primary source texts describing early colonial life in Australia. It also seeks to commemorate some of the tangible links between Macquarie University and its namesake, Lachlan Macquarie, the fifth governor of the colony of New South Wales (1810-1822). The first members of his family to come to Van Diemen’s Land were Frederick Lewis von Stieglitz and two of his brothers who arrived in 1829. Henry Lewis, another brother, and the father of John Charles and grandfather of Karl, arrived the following year. John Charles von Stieglitz, after qualifying as a surveyor in Tasmania, moved to Northern Queensland in 1868, where he worked as a surveyor with the Queensland Government, later acquiring properties near Townsville. In 1883, at Townsville he married Mary Mackenzie, who died in 1883. Later he went to England where he married Lillian Stead in London in 1886. On his return to Tasmania he purchased “Andora”, Evandale: the impressive house on the property was built for him in 1888. He was the MHA for Evandale from 1891 to 1903. Karl von Stieglitz visited England with his father during 1913-1914. After his father’s death in 1916, he took possession of “Andora”. He enlisted in the First World War in 1916, but after nearly a year in the AIF (AMC branch) was unable to proceed overseas due to rheumatic fever. -

89 CHAPTER 3 THE FEMALE ORPHAN SCHOOL AND ITS OPERATION DURING MACQUARIE’S GOVERNORSHIP The situation in the colony facing the incoming fifth Governor, was one which would require strong leadership to restore order. We shall be examining Lachlan Macquarie’s background, and also his involvement with the Female Orphan School. The part his wife Mrs Elizabeth Macquarie was to play in that institution will also engage our attention, as well as her background, her strong personality, and her leadership role as Patroness of the School. When a decision was made to relocate the School from Sydney to Arthur’s Hill, Parramatta we shall consider the Rev. Marsden’s activity in overseeing the construction. The problems he encountered in the construction will be discussed as well as the on-going inadequacies of the buildings. The enlargement of the Committee by the re-instatement of former members; by the nomination of the wives of prominent men; and by the inclusion of other gentlemen will be discussed, as well as the numerous deliberations which engaged the Committee’s attention. Changes in staff of Masters and Matrons were made in this period, and the contribution made by these people who were charged with the day-to- day running of the School will be noted. The change in the monitorial system of the School will be mentioned and the punishment meted out to one of the girls will be examined. Finally an argument linking Governor Macquarie’s humane approach to emancipists to his policies relating to the Orphan Schools, will be made in this chapter.
