Brecon Cathedral Website: http://www.breconcathedral.org.uk/ Brecon Cathedral; 5th- 12th August 2015. Capacity: 12 campers. Brecon Cathedral has a long-standing relationship with CSV Heritage Camps, having hosted a camp every year except one, since 2009. As a Cathedral, they love having the Campers around as they do a fantastic job with enthusiasm and attention to detail, and their hard work is for all to see. The Cathedral was, until the establishment of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon in 1923, the Parish Church of St John the Evangelist. A Norman Benedictine Priory was founded on the site in 1093 and this became the Parish Church in the 16th century at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries. Because of the nature and type of its location it is thought that the Norman Priory might have been built on the site of an older, possibly Celtic, Church. • The local area Brecon or as it is known in Welsh 'Aberhonddu' (meaning mouth of the Honddu) is a traditional Mid Wales market town nestling in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the County of Powys. This magical spot at the confluence of two rivers, the Usk and the Honddu has always been a popular destination, offering visitors spectacular scenery and leisure activities. Brecon remains first and foremost a traditional Mid Wales market town; Brecon Market is an indoor market with 20 stalls - as you will see on any Tuesday or Friday! Brecon has numerous attractions for when campers have time off, including 37 miles of canal, where you can walk or hire a kayak, or you could visit the National Park. • What is involved on the Brecon Camp? As in previous years, campers will be involved in helping renovate and maintain the fabric of the Cathedral as well as various jobs in the beautiful grounds, weather permitting. These will involve painting, waxing some of our medieval woodwork, steam cleaning paths, gardening work and much more! This year, the Campers are going to be here for the Brecon Jazz Festival weekend and as part of this, they will also be involved in helping our Facilities Manager around this event. • What is the accommodation like? Brecon Cathedral is the only Cathedral in Wales that has a Cathedral Close; Campers will be accommodated in the Canonry Flat and Diocesan Centre within the Cathedral Close. This will be ‘in-door camping’ so campers will need to bring their own sleeping bag and roll mat. There is a kitchen in the flat where campers will be able to prepare their meals as well as shower facilities. • Directions Brecon Cathedral, Cathedral Close, Brecon, Powys LD3 9DP The nearest Railway Station to Brecon is Abergavenny which is about 20 miles away. From Abergavenny, you can take the number 43 bus to Brecon, which takes about an hour. Once at Brecon bus station, the Cathedral is just a short walk. .
