I’d always been im- pressed that Beckenstein had kept the band together as long as he has, yet I was truly blown away here with his candor and his in- sight. For better or worse, Spyro Gyra has made the music they wanted to make, and Jay refuses to apologize for not falling into any jazz category. – Devon Murphy

We’re happy with the CD and I think it reflects the fact that we are still always great utterly enthusiastic about what we do. Latin music on Staying together for this long is a rarity for any genre. What has kept the band together? “the radio in New Well, really good people in the organization. The guys in the band are not just York. So from an very talented musicians – each one in their own way has got a lot to offer. Over the years we have become really good friends – these are my best friends and I early period of like to think they feel the same about me. We respect each other; we get along time I got to hear well with each other; and there is a lot of affection in the band. You have had many members that have had long stints with the band, in- that music and it’s cluding and Julio Fernandez, but you and Tom Schuman music that makes were there in the beginning and are still together. Is that the foundation for the band’s success? you move. Certainly. Julio has been in it for so long, I don’t even think that he wasn’t there in the beginning. But I guess you’re right. I guess it was Tom and I. And also there are people not in the playing band: my manager Phil Brennen, my road manager John Koron, both western New Yorkers, and my good friend Jer- emy Wall, who still writes for the band. The four of us were college roommates at UB (University of Buffalo). So the business core goes back to when we were in college together. And then with Tom and I – I just think we compliment each other. Tom is just a phenomenal jazz musician, he has got the technical thing totally covered, and I am a lyricist. I play melodically (I am more of a by-the-ear musician) and I bring a lot of nice melodies to the table. The two of us together are a very nice package and we recognize it; we both recognize that we need each other, and that together we are greater than we would be alone. You and Tom were both musically influenced by your parents right? Yeah. Actually everybody in the band is – the other night we were having din- ner with someone who had hired us and the guy had asked us if our parents were musicians. And right down the line all five of us in the band said, “Yes. My father was…my mother was.” So, it seems to be a generational thing, being a musician. Was that the link that brought you and Tom together? No. When I was just setting this thing up in Buffalo the keyboardist was Jere- my Wall, and Tom was only 16 or 17 years old at the time. He was kind of this

spectacular kid who was sneaking into the bar even though everybody kind of knew who he was. So Tom started sitting in with us when he was a teenager. Spyro Gyra was born in Buffalo and while you guys don’t live there today, does Buffalo still hold a special place in the heart of the band? I still root for the Bills and the Sabres. And also my soundman lives in Roch- ester and my road manager John Koron still lives in Buffalo. Yeah I still have a real emotional connection to Western New York. I know Charlie Parker and Lester Young were early influences on you. Ever think to record the music from that era? Well I don’t know about the music from that era. On this latest CD, if you listen to the cut “Wrapped In A Dream”, which is one I wrote, it goes back to the music from the ’50s – more Miles Davis perhaps than Charlie Parker and Lester Young. And it is still the music I listen to the most. Perhaps if I record a solo record I might do something that has a more straight ahead feel to it. Bird and Prez were big ones, but for me I would throw Stan Getz and Oliver Nelson in there and certainly Miles Da- vis. Maybe six or seven years after Bird is my jazz foun- dation. But Bird was a master, a Mozart, and he will be listened to for 500 years. Is it hard to duplicate the jazz from that era? I don’t think you try to duplicate it. When I think of the greats of jazz, going back before Bird, back to the ’20s, those musicians invented a language. And I am certainly not the inventor of the language. They were the founders, but I can use the language to try to make my own work. The harmonic language that was invented by Bird and Trane and Monk, it is an incredibly sophisticated lan- guage with which to work. Every musician that plays jazz will forever owe those guys because they created the vocabulary. So where does that put today’s musicians? If you are not duplicating, are you just trying to find your own niche? One of the ways that jazz has reinvented itself over and over again is combin- ing outside elements, and jazz has been really good at doing that. Whether it is Dizzy Gillespie playing Latin music, Bird playing Broadway music, or us com- bining some of the Pop and R&B from the ’70s and ’60s into the music, jazz has been able to incorporate outside elements without losing itself. And it has been a way of constantly making the music new and fresh. So although there is that very powerful and strong foundation that has been set down, part of the

You get airplay on both Smooth Jazz and Traditional Jazz stations. Do you think you belong in one category or another or both? We’re neither, and yet from one given piece of music to another we may fall into one. So I’m totally unapologetic about doing whatever I feel like doing stylistically. To call us any one thing usually misses the boat. It just doesn’t work. Sometimes for better or worse, and sometimes it has been for worse be- cause it can be much easier to market your music and sell your music to peo- ple and convince people to like your music if they have a clear idea of what you are. We just move around too much. But for us it’s great. And that’s all that counts. I’m happy having the freedom to do whatever I want. You asked earlier why the band stuck around. I think one of the main reasons we stuck around, clearly, is that a rather large group of people have stayed interested in what we are doing. They buy our CDs, come to our shows. Those are the people that have kept us alive, and they have accepted the fact that we are hard to pitch and hold. I’m very grateful to them because they have allowed us to do what we want. For those who haven’t heard, what is the story behind the name Spyro Gyra? When I first went to the University of Buffalo, my parents wouldn’t let me be a music major, so I pretended to be a pre-med major. During my first year in bi- ology I had to write a paper on a single cell simple green plant called spirogyra. A few years later we were playing at a little club in Buffalo called Jack Daniels. The club owner was kind of twisting my arm to come up with a name for the band and this silly sounding algae thing popped into my head. He misspelled it and that’s the way it’s been ever since. JW
