See you in two weeks. 17 The Carroll News Editorialwww.wjcu.org/cn October 11, 2007 Editorial Event cancellations John Carroll University’s Student Union Programming Board is normally the brain power behind on-campus events and activi- ties. A major goal of the group is to produce as many successful and entertaining events as possible and involve the student body. However, this year the committee will host one fewer event. The annual Oktoberfest, which was to take place on Oct. 5, was cancelled. Oktoberfest is an event that allows clubs and or- ganizations to raise funds by selling food and holding activities and games. SUPB claims that the event was withdrawn from the yearly list of events because many organizations lacked time and resources. We believe though that SUPB should attempt to implement as many activities as possible and strive to make events possible, regardless of the situation. The group is a programming board and the essence of the committee is to host and execute events for the student body. Although SUPB claims that organizations did not have the time or resources, there are alternatives for having the event. Oktober- fest could have been rescheduled for another weekend. Also, planning for Oktoberfest can begin much earlier in the year so that when it comes time to have the event, the majority of the planning and logistics can be easily executed. SUPB also claimed that the event was cancelled due to a lack of student participation in years past. However, with better advertising and larger incentives to participate, the event can be profitable for all the participating organizations. NOTABLE QUOTABLE The reasons given by SUPB do not justify the cancellation of an annual event that is part of the University’s tradition. SUPB should do their very best to make sure that events and activities are successfully planned and enjoyed by the student body. If an event is effectively planned, students are more apt to participate. “I think she’s maintaining her mark in the ” Editorial industry, showing there’s a greater come- Online SU voting back to come.
