Respected for Character.

John Carroll University is a Jesuit Catholic university dedicated to developing women and men with the knowledge and character to lead and to serve. Founded in 1886, JCU is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the United States and has been listed in U.S. News & World Report magazine’s top 10 rankings of Midwest regional universities for more than 20 consecutive years. Degree programs through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Boler School of Business are offered in nearly 60 major fields in the arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and business at the undergraduate level, and in select areas at the master’s level. The Boler School of Business holds dual international AACSB accreditation – a distinction held by only 11% of business programs worldwide, and is further distinguished by its nationally and regionally recognized accountancy and MBA programs. In fall 2013, the Boler School added its Pre-MBA Scholars program, which grants exceptional high school students dual admission to JCU’s undergraduate and 5th-Year MBA programs. The College of Arts & Sciences offers a wide array of rigorous learning opportunities and life-changing experiences for students, including exclusive opportunities such as the NBC/John Carroll University Meet The Press Fellowship in honor of JCU alumnus Tim Russert, Class of 1972, and research and experiential internships.

The Value of a John Carroll Degree

John Carroll is consistently recognized as one of the top schools in the Midwest for academic quality, student retention, and graduation rates. Our unique size, structure, culture, and environment make us very successful at providing an outstanding education for our students and helping them become John Carroll graduates in FOUR years. Our students not only graduate on time; they are successful. Within six months of graduation, 98 percent of John Carroll graduates surveyed from the class of 2012 were either in the workforce, in graduate school, or fulfilling a commitment to a year of service (visit www.jcu.edu/careercenter/success for details). Although our rankings are important, we judge our performance more by the character and success of our graduates. Our rich Jesuit tradition of learning, leadership, and service is at the heart of who we are as an institution. We challenge and empower our students to think critically, adapt, and solve problems in order to make a difference in an ever-changing world. A John Carroll liberal arts education offers students an engaging academic experience that prepares them not just for their first job, but for life. • Individual attention: Students are taught in small classes by professors who are experts in their fields, not teaching assistants or graduate students. • Faculty expertise: 96 percent of full-time teaching faculty have the highest degree in their field, and the majority of our full-time faculty have published books, articles, or received grants in the last two years. • Inquiry: Because we are an undergraduate-focused university, students have opportunities to work with equipment, get published, and gain invaluable experiences that many students at other research institutions do not get until graduate school. • Internships: Our students engage in invaluable internships at Fortune 500 companies; accounting and law firms; Clinic, University Hospitals, and other healthcare facilities; news and media outlets; government agencies; environmental firms; research laboratories; schools; nonprofits; and other organizations. More than 500 companies in are owned or operated by John Carroll alumni, allowing many opportunities for our students to gain valuable experiences that set them apart in their job search after graduation. • Service: Our students contribute more than 70,000 hours in service to the community each year. • Cultural competency: From immersion experiences in Central America to study abroad programs in London, Rome, and Madrid (to name a few), many of our students gain a global perspective and begin to understand other points of view.

The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) is one of those three. It began in 1902 with the major focus on the welfare of the student-athlete. The conference currently sponsors championships in 23 sports, 12 men’s and 11 women’s. Currently the conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, , University of Mount Union, , , Otterbein University and Wilmington College.

An accounting major playing football? Not something that would immediately come to mind. But that was the case with Dean Vomero, John Carroll class of 1989. Vomero came to JCU after graduating from McDowell High School in Erie, Pennsylvania. John Carroll had everything he was looking for in a college “John Carroll had a strong accounting program, a good location and allowed me a chance to contribute to the football program,” recalled Vomero. His skills were apparent from the first practices at Carroll, and the coaches were impressed enough to make him a starter on the offensive line right away. He would go on to become a four-year starter in the program. “I owe a lot to my position coach, Hank Cernigoj, for his patience and teaching ability which helped my career.” One of the fondest memories of football he has is the “fatty football” games after Friday practice. The linemen would get together to play touch football and afterwards go out for pizza. In his junior year, when Tony DeCarlo became the head coach, the football program began a period of success that goes on to this day. Beating Baldwin Wallace, 10-3, on September 12, 1987, was an especially memorable win. Coach DeCarlo’s team would go on to post the program’s first winning campaign since 1982. No other victory was as sweet and no other victory did as much as this one to restore the pride in the John Carroll football program. “It was a great win, a turning point for the program,” said Vomero. “We realized how good we could be.” After recovering from knee surgery, Vomero had a stellar senior year. A 3-2 upset loss at Grove City to end the season for the ranked Blue Streaks was a major disappointment. “That game was played in a rainstorm that just destroyed the field,” Vomero remem- bered. “It was so bad Grove City was penalized once for splashing water on the long snapper.” Despite the setback, Vomero’s efforts during the season were rewarded with selection as the team’s most valuable lineman as well as a first team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection. The rigors of his accounting major kept him busy during his time away from football. In his senior year, one of the coaches pulled him aside just to tell him what a great achievement it was to play football and succeed in such a difficult field of study. He also remembers during a Theology class when an earthquake was felt in northeast Ohio and the pro- fessor told them that God was sending a message that it was time to dismiss class. The attention to detail that Vomero that was so important in football and in class at John Carroll has served him well. After graduation, he began working for Ernst & Young, where he spent seven years. He followed that with several differ- ent business ventures, working in the field of restructuring, business strategy and expert testimony. He is currently the Managing Director of Applied Business Strategy in Cleveland. His business history, though located in Cleveland, has taken him to New York City as well as about a dozen different countries, working on complex matters for some of the largest businesses in the country. Vomero and his wife Critinia have two children, Connor (16) and Emma (12) ~ Bryan Fritz

After turning back Case Western Reserve, 27-10, in front of 3,000 fans yesterday at Finnigan Field, the John Carroll Blue Streaks were flushed with the bravado that accompanies victory. “The Streaks are back,” said JCU coach Tony DeCarlo, “The Streaks are definitely back. A lot of people questioned us, but now they have to believe the Streaks are back.” “Our goal is 9-0, and we believe that will happen,” predicted senior linebacker Dave Rastoka, who made 15 tackles to set a school career re- cord of 266. “No one wants to lose Former John Carroll president Rev. Michael J. Lavelle, S.J., accepting the Presidents’ Cup following the Blue Streaks’ win over Case Reserve in 1987 this year.” Senior tailback Steve Prelock, who rambled for 107 yards, said: “I’m confident with this team. We are playing together. We can go 9-0. I know it.” The Blue Streaks, whose 5-4 record the previous year had ended a series of losing seasons, are 2-0 as they prepare for their Pres- idents’ Athletic Conference back at home Saturday against Washington & Jefferson, ranked seventh nationally this week by Football News. The defense keyed JCU’s first triumph over CWRU (1-1) in five years. The Spartans were forced into two key errors early in the second half. The Blue Streaks took advantage and turned the 3-3 half-time standoff into 13-3 lead with 7:20 to play in the third quarter. On a third-and-10 situation with ball on the Spartans’ 15-yard line. CWRU quarterback Paul Washlock’s pass was intercepted by Jim Mitchell on the 12. Prelock then carried the ball four straight times. He plunged in from two yards out to put Carroll ahead to stay. On CWRU’s next series, John Carroll’s John Tompkins blocked a Mark Spain punt and the Streaks took over on the CWRU 19-yard line. Four plays later, Steven Graeca kicked a 34-yard field goal, his second of the game. He kicked a 42-yarder in the first half. “John Carroll is a good team, but if you make that many mistakes you are going to lose,” said CWRU coach Ron Stuckey. “We self-destructed today, but we are a good team and we will win some games.” Prelock scored from seven yards out in the fourth quarter and then Mitchell intercepted Washlock again and raced 85 yards for JCU’s final score. It was a tough day for the CWRU offense, as its only points in the opening half were the result of a 33-yard field goal by Chris Hutter. It was not until the last minute of the fourth quarter that the Spartans found the end zone. Washlock connected with Jamie Meek on a four-yard scoring strike for the game’s final points. Prior to this meeting between the Streaks and the Spartans, John Carrol had been outscored 129-22 in a string of four consecutive losses to its neighbors down Cedar Road. The seven year drought for the Streaks was ended and brought the series record between the two teams to a 10-7-1 John Carroll advantage.

15 about the blue gold club

What is the Blue Gold Club? The mission of the Blue Gold Club is to promote, support and recognize varsity athletics at John Carroll University. Established in 1982, the Blue Gold Club raises much needed funds that supplement the annual operating costs of the Department of Athletics. We also seek to engage alumni athletes, and all John Carroll alumni through sporting events, the annual Hall of Fame dinner and social outings and receptions.

How does Blue Gold Club Membership Help? The Blue Gold Club’s mission is to assist our student-athletes by providing them support for the best environment possible. For the past 33 years, former athletes, their parents and enthusiasts of JCU sports have contributed to the Club to enhance our student-athletes’ experience. In the past year alone )15-16) the Blue Gold Club contributed more than $140,000 to enhance the softball field and Shula weight room, purchase clothing and equipment for varsity teams, purchase outdoor shelters for soccer and lacrosse programs and sponsor senior dinner and alumni events.

Recent Blue Gold Club Enhancements & Programs • Donated $90,000 for the renovation of the Shula Weight Room in the stadium • Contributed funding for the renovation of the David R. Meuse Wrestling Room. • Purchases new record boards and championship banners for the swim team, and portable shelters for soccer and lacrosse • Supports alumni and senior dinner receptions for sports teams; as well as Hall of Fame and All-American recognition display cases. • Provides funding for supplemental needs for varsity teams such as timing systems, video cameras, uniforms and practice equipment.

Who joins the Blue Gold Club? Alumni, parents, friends and boosters…anyone interested in becoming a part of and contributing to the continuation of John Carroll’s successful athletic tradition.

There are six different levels at which to give, each with a benefits package that increases with the donation amount: Blue Gold ($50- $99), Head Coach ($100-$249), Athletic Director ($250-$499), Herb Eisele ($500-$999), All-American ($1000-$2499) and Hall of Fame ($2500+).

The following is a list of all Blue Gold members (individuals) who donated at least $100 during the 2015-16 school year. See bottom of page 17 for information regarding 2016-17 memberships as of 9/9/16

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Those outside, and perhaps even a few inside, the John Carroll football program may wonder what those four letters mean. Those four letters ... A ... M ... D ... and G ... located right at the front of the gold helmet. It is the abbreviation of Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, which in Latin means for the greater glory of God. In its broadest context, the phrase asks for all of mankind to strive to give God more glory by always doing what is more pleasing to him. It is the motto of the Society of Jesus. In the context of John Carroll, it also takes on the context of how everyone in the program strives to be a better player, a better coach, a better teammate, a better person. This is done in many ways, and shown both in action and in words. 18 BLUE STREAKS IN THE PROS

John Carroll has extended its reach beyond the borders of collegiate football. The Jesuit University of Cleveland is making a name for itself in the . Former Blue Streak linebacker (pictured upper right) made a name for himself in the NFL, completing 16 seasons in the league and seven with the Redskins before retiring at the end of the 2013 season. In 2012, a year in which he was named to his third Pro Bowl, Fletcher received the Bart Starr Award, given annually to the NFL player who best exemplifies leadership and outstanding character in the home, on the field and in the community. As the starting middle linebacker for the St. Louis Rams, Fletcher appeared in two Super Bowls. He posted a team-high nine tackles in a thrilling 23-16 victory over the in XXXIV. He also made five tackles in the Rams 20-17 loss to New England in Super Bowl XXXVI. Fletcher was a three-year letterwinner for the Blue Streaks (1995-97). He was a first team All-American selection in 1996 and 1997, as well as Football Gazette’s Division III Linebacker of the Year in 1997. That year, Fletcher set a school record for tackles in a season with 202. When Fletcher took to the field for Super Bowl XXXIV, he became the first John Carroll alumnus to play in an NFL championship game in 40 years. The last Blue Streak to do so was , class of 1951, who played on the Baltimore Colts’ back-to-back NFL Championship teams in 1958 and 1959. Fletcher is part of a distinguished list of Blue Streaks who have performed in regular season pro competition. Graham Armstrong (class of 1941) played for the Cleveland Rams of the NFL in 1941 and 1945 (NFL champions that year), and the of the AAFC in 1946-47. He played in 36 games over four years, playing a variety of positions including placekicker. He made 23 of his 27 extra points during his four-year pro career. Ed Ecker (class of 1944) began his career with the in 1947, then played for the Chicago Rockets of the AAFC in 1948. After a year off in 1949, Ecker played with the in 1950-51 before concluding his career with the Washington Redskins in 1952. Tom Lahey (class of 1941) had a brief stint with the Chicago Rockets of the AAFC in 1946 and 1947, playing end. Burrell Shields (class of 1952) also played two seasons in the NFL as a back, hooking on with the in 1954 and the Baltimore Colts in 1955. Don Shula (class of 1951, pictured right - left side) had a much bigger impact as a head coach in the NFL, but his career as a player spanned seven seasons. He started with the in 1951-52, moved to the Baltimore Colts in 1953-56, and concluded with Washington in 1957. Gene Stringer (class of 1925) played for the original Cleveland Bulldogs in 1925. Stringer was listed as playing five positions: halfback, fullback, tackle, quarterback and end. Carl Taseff (class of 1951, pictured right - right side) had the most successful career in the pro ranks of any Blue Streak up to this point. Originally a halfback, Taseff made his name as a defensive back. He made 20 interceptions over 11 pro seasons, starting with the Cleveland Browns in 1951. From 1953-61 he 19 BLUE STREAKS IN THE PROS played with the powerhouse Baltimore Colts. He wound up his career by playing with the in 1961 and Buffalo of the AFL in 1962. Taseff’s banner season was 1958, when he made seven interceptions for the storied NFL champion Colts. He played and started in the legendary 1958 NFL championship game when the Colts edged the in overtime. In more recent years, quarterbacks from John Carroll have received NFL and CFL attention. Larry Wanke (class of 1992) was a 1991 draft choice for the New York Giants. P.J. Insana (class of 1995) signed a free agent contract with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League in 1995. Tom Arth (class of 2003) spent two seasons with the as well as two spring seasons in NFL Europe with teams in Scotland and Germany. He also played one year in the Arena Football League with the Grand Rapids Rampage. Arth enters his second season as the head coach at his alma mater in 2014. John Carroll’s impact in the NFL is not limited to players. Three JCU graduates – Taseff, Gary Stevens, and Silvio Cornachione – served at one time or another on Shula’s staff with the Dolphins. Another JCU grad, Dick Walker, was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers staff that won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1978 and 1979. He also was part of Woody Hayes’ staff at Ohio State from 1969 to 1976, appearing in five Rose Bowls and one Orange Bowl. He was inducted into the JCU Hall of Fame in 2006. Chuck Priefer, a 1962 graduate of John Carroll, spent four decades as a college and professional coach. He was renowned as a special teams coach, sending several of his charges to the Pro Bowl. Included in his resume are a collegiate championship as a member of Georgia Tech’s staff in 1990, and a Super Bowl XXIX appearance with San Diego Chargers. (pictured upper right) and Josh McDaniels, both of whom played for JCU in the late 1990’s, have been part of four Super Bowl wins and five Super Bowl appearances with , including the most recent world championship, Super Bowl XLIX. Caserio has remained with the Patriots, occupying the top spot in the personnel department as Director of Player Personnel. McDaniels is back with the Patriots as offensive coordinator after spending time as a head coach with the . Four other Blue Streaks are with the Patriots in various capacities-- , , David Ziegler and Frank Ross. Another NFL team also has a John Carroll grad as its “OC”, as (class of 1995) holds that position with the Buffalo Bills. Prior to his assignment with Buffalo, Roman helped lead the to an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII against the in 2013 as the team’s offensive coordinator. Three former Blue Streaks were employed by the Super Bowl XLI champion Indianapolis Colts at the time of their win in administrative roles -- , , and David Caldwell (pictured lower right). Currently, Telesco (class of 1995) is the of the San Diego Chargers, while Caldwell (class of 1996) is the General Manager of the . Chris Polian (class of 1993) joined Caldwell in Jacksonville and is now Director of Pro Personnel. Polian’s brother, Brian (class of 1997), is currently in his second year as head coach at the University of Nevada. Ben Milsom (class of 2001) has also risen in the ranks of an NFL organization, as he is now Director of Sales for the , while David Ziegler (class of 2000), after several years as a pro scout for the Denver Broncos, has joined the personnel department for New England. Ken O’Keefe (class of 1975), who served for over a decade as the offensive coordinator at the University of Iowa, joined the in 2012 as the wide receivers coach. Although not a John Carroll graduate, it is also worth noting that Chris Shula, the defensive coordinator for John Carroll in 2014 and the grandson of the John Carroll football stadium’s namesake, left the Blue Streaks to take a position with the coaching staff of the San Diego Chargers. 20
