http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7968.2013v1n31p119 JORGE AMADO AND THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Elizabeth Lowe University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [email protected] Abstract: Jorge Amado (1912-2001) is the most translated Brazi- lian writer and the literary figure that has shaped the reception of Brazilian literature in the world. He is credited with opening the international literary market to the post-dictatorship generation of Brazilian writers. Yet Amado is also a controversial figure. The debate around him is sparked by what some believe is sexual and ethnic stereotyping in his post-1958 works and the reinforcement of “paternalistic “racial views. His reception therefore is mixed. For his English-language readers, he is a fascinating source of exotic and titillating narratives about the vast, unknown country of Brazil, and for Brazilians he is either a “great ambassador of Brazilian culture around the world” or a faux populist who dis- guises sexist and racist attitudes behind charming prose. This talk will address Amado’s literary career, his unique contributions to Brazilian letters, the challenges of translating his work, and his influence on the production of a new Brazilian literature for export Keywords: reception, controversy, translation. http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2012n62p341 A PREFACE TO A THEORY OF ART-FEAR IN BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Julio França Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Luciano Cabral da Silva Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Abstract There is no tradition in the study of horror in Brazilian literature; with Álvares de Azevedo”s tales of Noite na Taverna generally considered as the only example of Gothic, terror or horror narrative quoted in literary history. This article aims to demonstrate that there are several works in Brazilian literature which could be classified as “fear literature”—a fictional narrative that produces “artistic fear”. In fact, some of the most important Brazilian authors, including Machado de Assis, Bernardo Guimarães, Aluísio Azevedo, Inglês de Souza, João do Rio, Humberto de Campos and Coelho Neto, penned works in the macabre during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, critics were either unable to identify them as works of horror or paid no attention to an area of fiction in which social problems were not realistically represented. It presents major topics in the panorama of Brazilian cultural history and civilization from 1500 to the present through readings on regions, cultures, peoples, and arts, including the architects of Brazil’s national cultural identity, its chronological development, and modern self-description. Topics include discovery and rediscovery of Brazil, baroque architecture, romanticism and empire, regionalism, immigration, urbanization, and modernization. The main texts draw on a cultural history of Brazil through selected writings by major authors and scholars. The course features an individual creative project on the student’s experience in Brazil to be presented in Portuguese during the final two classes. Requirements No absences allowed in YSS. Despite the importance of this call to a more planetary approach to literature, the turn to a world scope often recapitulates problems associated with the nineteenth century emergence of the term “world literature”: local concerns and traditions dissolve into the search for general patterns or persistent dependencies. If these new comparative models tend to separate the local from the construction of literature’s “world,” significant strains of Latin Americanist criticism have also sought to distance the local from literature and the literary, often identifying the latter alternatively with either the collapse of previous emancipatory dreams or a complicity with power and domination. -

Artists: Brazilian 161 The artistic identity of Brazil includes the influences of its indigenous peoples and each of the successive cultures that laid claim to the land, and thus its maritime art reveals a rich blend of native and European styles. Colonial Period Much of Brazil's early maritime art came from the artists and draftsmen who traveled to Brazil, seeking to docu ment the newly discovered territories. Images of the exotic Brazilian coast were sketched into personal journals and ship's logs. Maps and drawings allowed mariners to navigate the extensive Brazilian coast. There are few works by known artists, however, from the colonial period. Seventeenth-century engravings of Todos os Santos Bay, published in London, were some of Europe's first views of the Brazilian harbor. Dutch painter Frans Post (1612-1680) painted Brazilian coastal scenes in 1637. -
Brazilian Gothic: Allegories of Tradition in Gilberto Freyre and the Catholic Novelists of the 1930S
Athens Journal of Philology - Volume 1, Issue 3 – Pages 209-220 Brazilian Gothic: Allegories of Tradition in Gilberto Freyre and the Catholic Novelists of the 1930s By Fernando Monteiro de Barros This paper traces the intertextual presence of the eighteenth-century English gothic novel in the works of Brazilian sociologist Gilberto Freyre, notably The Masters and the Slaves (1933), and the novels by Brazilian Catholic writers Lúcio Cardoso and Cornélio Penna, who both depict a setting marked by emblems of a ruined patriarchic tradition that echo the splendour of a bygone monarchic and aristocratic past. In the context of 1930 Brazil, the decadent plantation manors of the once thriving coffee plantation areas of inland Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais stand as tropical counterparts of the haunted castles present in the gothic literary tradition, according to both Freyre’s sociological study on Brazilian society and to Cardoso’s and Penna’s novels. Indeed, the focus of Brazilian Modernism on that decade begins to lie upon the tensions between tradition and modernity, in a country where the archaic coexisted with urban industrialization. In the same manner that it occurs in the English gothic novels, in which the imagery of tradition appears in a phantasmatic way, with the ruined castle as an allegory of the medieval past overthrown by modernity, the ruined plantation houses of Brazil’s imperial and colonial times that are so recurring in Cardoso’s and Penna’s novels stand for the country’s tradition supplanted by the Republic, which brought about the industrialization and the growth of the Brazilian bourgeoisie and its values. -

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES This course focuses on the fictional representation of the formation of modern and contemporary Brazilian national identity in Brazilian literature, with a particular focus on the novel. The course aims to familiarize students with key social components to the definition of a common Brazilian identity — namely race, class, gender and migration —, using literature as a gauge for the perception Brazilian citizens have of these topics. We will read and debate Aluísio Azevedo’s O Cortiço (The Slum, 1890), a naturalist novel written at the time of the abolition of slavery. O Cortiço focuses on the development of Rio as an early melting pot of Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous and European heritage, one that defines the basis for contemporary Brazilian society. We will study Jorge Amado’s acclaimed Capitães da Areia (Captains of the Sands, 1937), a novel about the children that live in the streets of Salvador da Bahia. We will use an intersectional approach that focuses on class asymmetries, gender barriers, and racial discrimination, all topics that are addressed by the novel, as it renders a compelling account of the life of these disenfranchised children and their forms of cultural expression, such as capoeira. -

Ginway: The Amazon in Brazilian Speculative Fiction There are two key moments when the Amazon is used as the setting for Brazilian science fiction, both during periods of dictatorship in the twentieth century. The first takes place during the authoritarian government of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945), the second after the decades-long push for modernization and technological change imposed by the military government from 1964 to 1985. Curiously, however, the portrayal of the Amazon during these two periods is strikingly different. As Candace Slater has noted, Amazonia has traditionally been portrayed in an ambivalent way, either as a verdant inferno or as a paradise filled with unattainable riches (38-48).1 Indeed, the Amazon region can be termed an “empty signifier” into which any number of meanings can be placed: nationalist projects, utopian dreams, and nightmarish scenarios of cultural and ecological destruction.
