www.castleairmuseum.org CONTRAILS FALL 2019 - PRESERVING MILITARY AVIATION HERITAGE ON APPROACH By: Joe Pruzzo, CEO The Museum has been a beehive of activity thus far in 2019 on all fronts. Our beautiful Lockheed MC-130 P Hercules Aircraft was moved from the Castle Airport Tarmac area to the Museum this past July. As you can image this was quite an undertaking! Many Museum departments, plus municipalities and utility companies were involved to facilitate this move. Personally, and on behalf of the entire Museum thank you to all who participated to make this move a resounding success! The dedication of this aircraft was held on Saturday Oct. 26, 2019. While on the subject of grounds and facilities, they have never looked better! Thank you Tim, Larry, Ed, ADM-20 Quail Decoy Missle and Brian for all of your hard work and dedication. For the first time we took our television campaign North to the Sacramento market, while pouring more into our Fresno television campaign, which resulted in an Open Cockpit Day larger than ever experienced by the Museum! Aviation Pavilion to host events, both private and community Approximately 5,000 plus in attendance on Monday, yes events, along with the prospect of having the option of hosting Monday Memorial Day May 27. I must thank our exceptional traveling, cultural exhibits for our region and beyond. Our staff and volunteers for shifting the day from Sunday to marketing and promotion campaigns have been critical in the Monday, a mere 48 hours prior due to inclement weather. We growth of Museum awareness and getting more people to are diligently working towards our long desired goal of an come be amazed!! Hope to see you soon at the Museum! HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Moving the C130 HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HANGAR HAPPENINGS By: Jeff Heyer, Restoration Manager all has welcomed us with some better weather, and a note I started in 2003 and restoration was a lot smaller group new set of 24 UC Merced inters for the semester. I must back then. I was still working full time and only could make pass on thanks and appreciation for the work our it to the hangar one day a week. I really felt part of the team restoration team does. From setting up aircraft stands for when Bill Hiller gave me the blue restoration hat. This last FOpen Cockpit Day by John and Dave, to taking over week I was able to hand out the new blue restoration hats. management of restoration during my absence by Mac. All This was a very proud moment for me and the kicker is Bill of our team members continue raising the bar on our quality Hiller’s family provided the money for the hats, and while of work completed. Our Hidden Collection is growing with Bill is not physically with us anymore, his spirit was there as the addition of a Quail and an Chucker. Our B58 has 16 of I passed out the hats. I look forward to seeing what the new the 18 new tires and restored wheels, plus four new axle stands year will bring and what adventures await us. You are installed. The B36 is sporting new camera doors. Work welcome to stop by the hangar anytime the doors are open to continues of the F100, F102, and the Firebee 2. On a personal see “What’s Happenin’ in the Hangar!” US Congressman Jim Costa at dedication of the EC 130 Wing Commander Taft Aujero with the 129th Presentation from Diane Westmoreland-Pedrozo Air Rescue Wing on behalf of CA Senator Anna Caballero VOLUNTEERby Kim Heyer, Volunteer Coordinator/Special CORNER Events s we look back at this year it is easy to say Car Show “WOW What a Year!!” From the placement of the MC 130 Hercules to the overwhelming success of the May Open Cockpit Day, with the Arecognition of two of our long time volunteers Peter “Scotty” Burns and Al Osborn, I think we are moving in the right direction. Car shows, Wine and Craft Beer tasting festivals, Golf Tournaments – just a few of the fun and exciting events that have happened here this year. We have had many new volunteers sign up and UC Merced came through again with a class of 32 Interns working in many different aspects of the museum operations. Partnering with UC Merced has been a win-win all the way around. As we approach the holiday season and the big slow down, it is time to start thinking about next year and the new and updated image we want to project to the community. We need to work hard to keep the Pavillion Project moving forward and we are crossing our fingers that we will receive the grant. This project would elevate us to another level of success in the aviation museum world! As always with this much activity we need more and more help from our volunteers. Please keep coming to the monthly meeting (last Sat of each month at 9am) to find out what is going on and how you, YES YOU, can help our museum thrive and grow.
