ironcolor shiner Notropis chalybaeus Kingdom: Animalia FEATURES Phylum: Chordata The ironcolor shiner has a black stripe on its side Class: Actinopterygii that continues through its lips and chin. The inside Order: Cypriniformes of its mouth is black. The eye diameter is longer than its snout length. The dorsal fin origin aligns Family: Cyprinidae with the pelvic fin origin and is much closer to the ILLINOIS STATUS snout than to the caudal fin. There is a black spot at the base of the caudal fin. The back is yellow-brown, threatened, native and the scales here are outlined with dark pigment except for the ones directly above the dark stripe. The body color is silver-white below the dark stripe. The breeding male has orange-red coloration on the body and fins, and tubercles are present on the chin and lower jaws. Teeth are present in the throat. Adults range from about one and one-half to two and one-half inches in length. BEHAVIORS This species lives in creeks and rivers with clear water, a sand bottom and many aquatic plants. They swim in schools in mid-water, feeding on small aquatic animals, mainly insects. FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. POLICY The Natural Resources Conservation Service has responsibility to protect federal and state listed endangered species and their habitat(s). National Policy is contained in the General Manual, Title 190 - Ecological Sciences, Part 410, Subsection 410.22 "Threatened and Endangered Species of Plants and Animals". If there is potential that a proposed or planned practice or action will adversely impact a species and/or its habitat, no further assistance will be provided by the NRCS. This agency will initiate consultations with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the New York State - Department of Environmental Conservation only at the request of the landowner. If such a situation arises, NRCS personnel are directed to immediately contact the State Biologist for further instructions. ENDANGERED SPECIES Species in danger of extinction throughout all, or a significant portion of its range. THE FISHES OF THE CAROLINA SANDHILLS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE by Larry L. Olmsted and Donald G. Cloutman Final Report to United States Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service March 1978 INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife has established more than 300 national wildlife refuges for management of waterfowl, large mammals, and certain endangered species. Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 as a wildlife demonstration area (USlll, Fish and Wildlife Service 1968). Although management practices and developments are designed primarily to Improve the habitat of certain birds and mammals, the area also serves as a sanctuary for many other forms of life, including fishes. Little information is available concerning the fishes of the Sandhills region in South Carolina, and no detailed studies have been conducted previously on the refuge. Welsh (1916) reported on fishes he collected during a canoe journey in the Lumber, Pee Dee, and Waccamaw drainages from Pinebluff, North Carolina to Georgetown, South Carolina, and Carolina Power and Light Company (1976) has surveyed the fishes of Lake Robinson and Black Creek south of the refuge. This present study was initiated to provide distributional data on fishes of the Sandhills region and to formulate management recommendations for protecting threatened species or species of economic or ecological interest on the refuge. DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA The Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge (Fig. 1) consists of 46,000 acres (18,600 ha) in a wide band of sandhills along the Fall Line between the Coastal Plain and Piedmont Plateau in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Project Manager and compiler for the freshwater fish status review was Jeanette Bowers-Altman, Principal Zoologist, ENSP; she was not a reviewer on the review panel. Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries biologists compiled a list of 65 species to be reviewed using the Delphi Technique (Appendix 1). Twelve species were dropped from the review process due to reviewer concerns over species’ utilization of marine habitats. Several reviewers suggested that the ENSP conduct a separate status review focusing on anadromous fish species. The statuses of the remaining 53 species were reviewed during four rounds. Ten panelists agreed to participate in the review process. One reviewer dropped out during Round 1. Each of the nine remaining panelists participated in all four rounds. Reviewers included experts from NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife and other state agencies, federal agencies, and academia. Panelists were provided with information on each species, including current status in NJ and across their range; species range maps created by NatureServe; NJ Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries (BFF) native fish maps of fisheries data collected from 2000 to 2012 (data were extracted from the BFF FishTrack Database and compiled with data from DEP’s Freshwater and Biological Monitoring, the Pinelands Commission, and USGS); NJ Freshwater and Biological Monitoring/EPA fish distribution maps, Pinelands Commission fish distribution and abundance graphs; Shortnose sturgeon Delaware River occurrences generated from NJDEP Biotics data; and other materials.
