In fact, there are vanishingly few universals of language in the direct sense that all languages exhibit them. Instead, diversity can be found at almost every level of linguistic organization. This fundamentally changes the object of enquiry from a cognitive science perspective. This target article summarizes decades of cross-linguistic work by typologists and descriptive linguists, showing just how few and unprofound the universal characteristics of language are, once we honestly confront the diversity offered to us by the world’s 6,000 to 8,000 languages. After surveying the various uses of “universal,” we illustrate the ways languages vary radically in sound, meaning, and syntactic organization, and then we examine in more detail the core grammatical machinery of recursion, constituency, and grammatical relations. Although there are significant recurrent patterns in organization, these are better explained as stable engineering solutions satisfying multiple design constraints, reflecting both cultural-historical factors and the constraints of human cognition.

    ABSTRACT The Music of Language by Andrew Joseph Keller Spoken languages are musical. Tonal languages from East Asia and Africa use pitch to convey meaning. Clicking languages from southern Africa use percussive consonants not found in other languages. Constructed languages such as whistled languages from the Canary Islands, and drumming and xylophone languages from Africa are musical-surrogate representations of spoken languages. After a comparison of the musical qualities of these languages, this document will examine how twentieth-century composers have explored the music of language in a way previous Western composers had not. This includes natural languages in the works of Ernst Toch, John Cage, Steve Reich, Vinko Globokar and Georges Aperghis, as well as constructed languages in the music of Kurt Schwitters, Milton Babbitt, Luciano Berio, Cathy Berberian, Stuart Saunders Smith, Adriano Celentano, and Eduard Khil. Unlike previous research of language-inspired music that has focused on individual composers and their works, this document aims to create connections between twentieth-century compositional techniques and to create categories of differentiation between spoken language music. To pomeni, da se te finančne pogače zaradi kratkovidnosti pri upra- vljanju te izrazito zbirokratizirane agencije večinoma oklepa peščica (zasebnih) produkcijskih podjetij, ki za svoj obstoj potrebujejo stalne in izdatne injekcije javnega denarja, ne pa mladi producenti, režiserji z ulice ali siceršnji alternativni filmski ustvarjalci. Na drugi strani spektra so vse šibkejši tudi veliki tiskani me- diji, predvsem dnevno časopisje, zaradi česar se je pod eksistencialno preizkušnjo znašla filmska kritika, vzporedno s tem pa trpi javni okus in sposobnost sploš- nega prebivalstva za presojanje kakovosti filmskih del.

    US-China Foreign Language, January 2018, Vol. 16, No. 1, 30-47 doi:10.17265/1539-8080/2018.01.003 D DAVID PUBLISHING Translating Artificial Languages and Alien Identities in Science Fiction (Multilingual) Films Michela Canepari University of Parma, Parma, Italy Throughout history, artificial languages have often developed side by side natural languages, and although some of them have been relegated to the status of bizarre experiments, others have prospered and, as with Esperanto, are used to this day. In this sense, literature and cinema have often posited themselves as important arenas of linguistic creativity and have repeatedly voiced the impact new languages can have in societies where intercultural and interlinguistic issues are brought to the fore. From the Newspeak created by Orwell in 1984 to the Nadsat we find in A Clockwork Orange by Burgess, artificial languages have often represented important tools through which authors could question the relationship between language and power, the linguistic representation of Others, its consequences, and so on. In particular, because the genres of science fiction and, to a certain extent, fantasy represent the ideal settings in which the creativity of language can express itself, many of the artificial languages created throughout the 20th and the 21st century stem from this type of production. This paper therefore aims at analyzing some of the instances of artificial languages as represented in some of the most popular science fiction products of our age (the Star Wars saga in particular), focusing specifically on the way they were translated audio-visually for the Italian audience. As my paper suggests, the ineffective and often inadequate translations of these languages, which represent essential aspects of the fictional universes construed in these works, go to the detriment of the viewers’ enjoyment and, more fundamentally, affect the many implications the source texts have at a linguistic, cultural, and philosophical level.
