A TRIP TO THE MOVIES satisfies a very human need to gather with friends, family, and community. In 2019, that humanity was reflected in the movies themselves: films about families (March, Kim, and Crawley), films about human talent, human decency, human foibles, human resilience, human interdependence, and so much more.

2019 STAGE ON SCREEN 6 SPECIAL EVENTS

WAR AND PEACE At seven hours and two minutes (nine hours with intermissions!), Sergei Bondarchuk’s adaptation of WAR AND PEACE is the longest film ever shown at BMFI in a single screening. Audience members who stayed for the entirety were gifted with a mini Moscow Mule mug and a once-in-a- lifetime BMFI experience.

WAR AND PEACE relied on a cast of thousands to create its unique cinematic experience, and so too does BMFI. In 2019, contributions from 5,546 of our closest friends and film lovers enabled us to exhibit the best films, offer the most interesting classes, and maintain our historic facility.

SPECIAL EVENTS 7 SPECIAL EVENTS

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a tradition at BMFI…and so are the early sell-outs and full theaters.

Due to popular demand, for the first time ever, we dedicated three of our screens—611 seats—to the annual event. Your excitement and creative costumes are definitely a few of our favorite things.

SPECIAL EVENTS 8 SPECIAL EVENTS

DOWNTON ABBEY What better place to take in the feature-length continuation of the DOWNTON ABBEY saga than our era-specific theater? BMFI, which opened in 1926, is the exact type of movie palace that a star-struck Daisy, date-night Bateses, or even a begrudging Mrs. Patmore would have enjoyed on a free evening. Attendees at our premiere event joined fellow DOWNTON enthusiasts to get a leg up on the crowds, experiencing the film one night before its official opening.
