MODERN SOCIETIES and NATIONAL IDENTITIES Legal Praxis and the Basque-Spanish Conflict
MODERN SOCIETIES AND NATIONAL IDENTITIES Legal Praxis and the Basque-Spanish Conflict Unai Urrastabaso Ruiz IDENTITIES AND MODERNITIES IN EUROPE Identities and Modernities in Europe Series Editor Atsuko Ichijo Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Kingston University United Kingdom The Identities and Modernities in Europe series covers one of the central issues of the social sciences: that of modernity. Arising from a European Commission funded FP7 project, ‘Identities and Modernities in Europe’, the series brings together the latest research findings and provides a broader sociological, historical and anthropological analysis of various dimensions of identity in contemporary European societies. By way of a comparative study of processes of Europeanisation, the series contributes to sociological understandings of migration, secularization and education. It also examines the dynamics between Europeanisation, nationalisation and globalisation. Bidding Wars: Enactments of Expertise and Emotional Labor in the Spanish Competition for the European Capital of Culture 2016 Title
BIDDING WARS: ENACTMENTS OF EXPERTISE AND EMOTIONAL LABOR IN THE SPANISH COMPETITION FOR THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2016 TITLE By Alexandra Oancă Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Professor Jean-Louis Fabiani Professor Daniel Monterescu CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2017 I hereby state that this dissertation contains no material accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions. The thesis contains no materials previously written and/or published by another person, except where appropriate acknowledgment is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Budapest, May 2017 Alexandra Oancă CEU eTD Collection In the loving memory of Marcel Oancă (1961-2016) CEU eTD Collection Abstract Competition appears to be pervasive. Nowadays, it is portrayed as the necessary philosophy of socio-economic life, seemingly driving both companies and cities, to engage in an all-out competitive struggle for resources. However, competition between cities is neither ‘natural’ nor a ‘macro-structural effect’ of contemporary urbanism and state restructuring but a dynamic and relational ensemble of socio-spatial policy processes that connect and disconnect cities, scales and wider policy networks. For European cities, the engineering of inter-urban competition is a state-led political and economic project: it is not a coherent project of the EU but a partial assemblage of different policy processes that have uneven consequences and that are contestable and contested. Instead of looking at inter-urban competition and competitive bidding solely as phenomena that are reflecting and reinforcing class interests, state projects or hegemonic ideologies, it is more productive to include them into a relational and processual analysis and focus on how these processes of inter-city rivalries are actually unfolding and on the specific labor practices that make them possible. -
The Unsettled Debate: Monarchy and Republic in Spain and Greece in the Interwar Years*
■ Assaig] ENTREMONS. UPF JOURNAL OF WORLD HISTORY Barcelona ﺍ Universitat Pompeu Fabra Número 6 (juny 2014) www.entremons.org The Unsettled Debate: Monarchy and Republic in Spain and Greece in the Interwar Years* Enric UCELAY-DA CAL (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) abstract The following essay examines the political development in Spain and Greece between the World War I and World War II, comparing these two Mediterranean countries and placing them in a broader European and global context. The conflict between the supporters of monarchy and republic as forms of government was extremely important in the political debate in both countries, and shaped their history in a quite remarkable way. The discussion of these intricate dynamics will help to appreciate the problems that Spain and Greece faced at that time, and can also contribute to a deeper understanding of some key features of the historical change in these two countries. resumen El siguiente ensayo examina el desarrollo político en España y Grecia en el período entre la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, comparando estos dos países mediterráneos y situándolos en un contexto europeo y global más amplio. -

Dossier on Greens in Spain 2Nov2011
To the Council Delegates Copenhagen, 11-13 May 2012 Dear Delegates, We inform you by this separate letter that the EGP Committee proceeds with the proposal to the Copenhagen Council to withdraw the membership of the ‘Confederación de los Verdes de Espana’. We have sent you a separate mailing on the issue to avoid all confusion or running the risk that the issue will not be picked up from the mails with general information to the EGP Delegates. We know this is a delicate and sensitive issue and that is why we want you to be fully aware of all the facts. You have received in November 2011 and in February 2012 a full dossier (annex) stating the European Green Party repeatedly received information that the Confederación has not been functioning properly. Procedure at the Council We have scheduled a closed session in the Copenhagen programme, on Saturday from 9h00 to 10h00, for Delegates only, to discuss and give you the opportunity for questions and answers. Naturally we will give the representatives of the Confederación the floor as well to enable them to express their view on the matter. We bring the membership issue to the vote on Sunday morning at the beginning of the voting session, where we will proceed as in a normal voting session and give the floor to one speaker pro and one speaker contra before proceeding towards the vote. More information The Committee received, among others, complaints on the Confederación regarding the following points: no respect for their statutes and internal democratic rules, lack of clarity as regards the leadership, lack of transparency and doubts regarding the existence of the legal seat of the party. -

Human Rights in Spain – a Mere National Topic?
ÖGfE Policy Brief 27'2015 Human rights in Spain – a mere national topic? By Ruth Simsa & Luis Berraquero-Díaz Vienna, 27 July 2015 ISSN 2305-2635 Policy Recommendations 1. Europe must respond to the recently toughened Spanish law on public security that is bound to lead to a severe restriction of civil rights. 2. The observation and documentation of human rights violations in EU member states should be improved. 3. An active role of European politics in fostering civil and social rights in all member states would comply with its crucial values and could increase trust in the EU.
