Of course these books have a ver classic vibe to them, taking after LoTR and big epic quests, so I kind of knew it would be a slow start with an epic end, but Williams takes that to the extreme : This book is part two of the climax where everything is coming together. I also didn't feel like there was ample reason given why Simon wasn't told this by before by all the people who knew about it. In fact it seems clear at times that Williams was worrying about the story first and the themes later, which means the tale may not resonate on as mythic a level as Tolkien's does. To green angel tower, part 2 is the second half of the final book in the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy. This is the second half of "To Green Angel Tower". -

I was interested in elucidating the ways in which this reality, which formed the basis for such fiction, was transformed by the writer in his/her work and the reasons behind the transformation. Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. Hamlin Does it mean anything? -Leo Steinberg, ‘Jasper Johns: the First Seven Years of His Art’, 1962 It is one of the great idées reçues in the history of contemporary art that Jasper Johns is difficult to interview. Despite his otherwise affable rapport, he is alleged to stonewall his interlocutors by blocking their efforts to find meaning in his artworks and intentions. He has given many interviews in the course of his career.1 These dialogues contain plenty of parry and joust that, at first glance, appear to yield very little insight. In what Michael Crichton dubbed the ‘Johnsian conversation’,2 the reader routinely encounters the sort of exchange that the late Leo Steinberg fictionalized in his now canonical essay on Johns in 1962.3 The interview, as Steinberg later acknowledged, was not transcribed from an actual dialogue, but This is a revised and expanded version of a paper entitled “Interviewing Johns” that I presented on February 22, 2008 at the Annual Conference of the College Art Association in Dallas. Abstract Radical Empiricist Poetics in the New York School and Beyond by Maude Chanson Emerson Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Charles Altieri, Chair This dissertation contends that the first-generation New York School poets—especially John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, and James Schuyler—develop the aesthetic possibilities of the philosophical stance that William James called “radical empiricism.” James followed the British empiricists in granting priority to parts, individuals, and unanalyzed sensations, but he radicalized the empiricist perspective by holding experiences of cohesion and relation to be as real as those of disjunction and discrete sensation. Schuyler, Ashbery, and O’Hara each practice an empiricist poetics: a poetics of the everyday, the felt, and the miscellaneous. At the same time, their poetries pose challenges to the conceptions of experience on which empiricism historically has been based, from the presumption of a unified experiencing subject to the relegation of sensation and abstraction to separate orders of reality. I argue that these challenges should not be seen as a denial of experience, as some postmodernist readings of New York School poetry allege, but as part of a careful and critical commitment to experience. As radical empiricists, these poets understand experience not as an inward phenomenon but as a field in which inner and outer are merely potential and constantly shifting divisions. -

It’s quite US-centric, but definitely worth picking up! Brittany Burns The Hate U Give Angie Thomas A really grounding and personal view of the Black Lives Matter movement from the perspective of a teenage girl who sees her unarmed friend shot by the police. For those who are a bit lazier, the movie is also excellent. Pachinko Min Jin Lee A really interesting (and heartbreaking) dive into the experience of Koreans living in Japan in the 20th century through the life of a young Korean woman. What’s truly shocking is that a lot of the hardships and discrimination experienced in the early 1900s are still happening today. 1Q84 Haruki Murakami My favorite of Murakami’s intense dream-like epics. It’s a deep and complex web of stories but it’s so worth the effort. Jeremy Button The Men Who United The States Simon Winchester I love this book because it’s about how America went from being an east of the Appalachian Mountains collection of states to becoming a nation as its size grew exponentially. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science December 2015 An Abstract of the Thesis of Clara Dawn Piazzola for the degree of Bachelor of Science in the Department of Biology to be taken December 2015 Title: The Poison of Misinformation: Analyzing the use of science in science fiction novels, in · original short story The purpose of this thesis was to read a variety of science fiction novels and understand how the science progresses each novel. For the novels Creature by Peter Benchley, The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton, Dune by Frank Herbert, and The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi, I considered the role of science in relation to plot and character development. For Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, I analyzed the creativity that the author used with science in addition to the role science played in the novel. For Jaws by Peter Benchley, I researched the accuracy of the science used and determined that the majority was accurate. With all of these analyses in mind, I created a template to guide authors in writing science fiction.
