  • Summerreadinggeneral2021.Pdf
Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School Summer Reading Assignment 2021 Students will read any novel or nonfiction work by Michael Crichton and complete six (6) dialectical journal entries (see instructions below). You must space out the quotes you find (2 from the beginning, 2 from the middle, and 2 from the end) from throughout the novel. Dialectical Journals The term “Dialectic” means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by using conversation involving question and answer.” Think of your dialectical journal as a series of conversations with the text. The process is meant to help you develop a better understanding of the text. Use your journal to incorporate your personal responses to the text and your ideas about the themes covered. You will find that it is a useful way to process what you’re reading, prepare yourself for group discussion, and gather textual evidence for your Literary Analysis assignments in your future classes. Procedure: o As you read, choose passages that stand out to you and record them in the left-hand column of a T- chart (ALWAYS include page numbers). o In the right column, write your response to the text (ideas/insights, questions, reflections, and comments on each passage) o If you choose, you can label your responses using the following codes: (Q) Question – ask about something in the passage that is unclear (limit to only two) - be sure to respond to/reflect upon your question if/when you find an answer. (C) Connect – make a connection to your life, the world, or another text (CL) Clarify – answer earlier questions or confirm/disaffirm a prediction (R) Reflect – think deeply about what the passage means in a broad sense – not just to the characters in the story.

  • Synopsis of Disclosure
SYNOPSIS OF DISCLOSURE Tom Sanders is an executive at Digicom, a leading computer software firm. Digicom is about to launce a new virtual reality-based data storage system that is expected to revolutionize the industry, and Bob Garvin, the owner of the company, is in the midst of negotiating a merger that could bring $100 million into the firm. However, while Tom is expecting a promotion, he discovers the position has been given instead to a new hire, Meredith Johnson, with whom Tom had an affair years ago, before he was married. After her first day of work, Meredith invites Tom up to her office and makes a concerted attempt to seduce him. The next morning, Meredith accuses Tom of sexual harassment, and he realizes this is merely a power ploy to get him out of Digicom for good. Tom is determined to fight, files a counter- suit, but he finds himself stuck in a situation where people do not believe a man could possibly be harassed by a woman and it leaves him with no friends at the company. Finally, because of his efforts with Louis Fernandez, his attorney, he succeeds in proving that he is not guilty and consequently Meredith’s position is replaced by Stephanie Kaplan, CFO in Digicom. At the end of the story, Louis Fernandez concludes that this case has happened because of the rarity of women who have executive positions. 21 Maranatha Christian Universitas BIOGRAPHY John Michael Crichton was born in Chicago, Illnois, but he grew up in Roslyn, Long Island, New York. His father was John Henderson Crichton and his mother was Zula Miller Crichton.
