By the time I was about a third of the way through the book, I was already burnt out. Things took so long to be explained that characters were yelling at other characters to get to the point. Since they're the heroes, Simon and Miriamele's shy creep toward each other often takes center stage and he plays it well to make it seem natural despite the lopsidedness of available options while several women have their eye on Simon, Miriamele's suitors range from people who want to seduce her for political reasons or those who want to seduce her for lecherous reasons, none of whom are anywhere near her age. Compare that to our last cover, where our two heroes stare at you as grizzled veterans, holding their weapons with utmost confidence, Simon wearing torn clothing that suggests "you should see the other guy" while Miriamele gives us her best "come at me, bro" look. The ending reminds you how much has changed since the start, how many of these people started out this series as total strangers to each other and how much they've gotten to know each other in the interim. I think that since writing this series has probably only gone from strength to strength and I know I loved the series by him, so I am looking forward to reading more set in this world with his new book. Pus, everything leading up to the confrontation was just as powerful as the pulse of the swords that drove Simon, Caramis, and Elias to their confrontation with the Elias, Pyrates, and the Storm King. The best part is the worldbuilding. It is at first a challenge to acclimate to the slow seduction and melancholy tone of Williams' world, but it is a challenge well worth undertaking. I'll have them read and reviewed pre-release. I found this last installment in the series to be a bit drawn-out but there were still many great parts. Maybe that's the modern expectation of darker fantasy talking, but our primary characters DID feel very safe, so this last book felt a little cluttered from all the overlapping scenes. If you finish the first book and dig it, you should read to the end. It was so action-packed as if I were watching an action movie. Williams gave the world his own structure and rules, and created unique creatures and challenges for his characters. The swordplay and close-calls are fun but what kept me here through the millennial length was his skill at characterization, the sheer sincerity of the characters and how real their relationships feel even as the stakes grow higher. I'm pleased to have read the whole saga, but the 5th star is not forthcoming for my reading tastes as the plot progression is simply too slow. I liked the journey up the fantasy family tree. It was full of not only action, strife, and even romance, but also the eerie clashes between the Sithi and their evil counterparts, the Norns, which were fought via haunting songs, and even the final battle with the Storm King, Ineluki. I do think there was a lot for Williams to handle in this story, and it still had to be exciting and readable, and I think he did manage that.
