8 Shipping

The 2009 is now accepting shipments for donated books for the attendee bookbags, as well as any related ephemera – bookmarks, postcards, flyers, buttons, stickers – being donated for giveaway at WFC.

If you are a publisher wanting to donate in quantity, and have not already been in touch, please contact Rina Weisman at pub- [email protected]. Please do not send books without first emailing her. Shipments will be accepted until Tuesday, October 27th; anything that arrives after that date may be returned to sender.

Please address your shipping label as follows:

Rina Weisman / WFC 2009 c/o Extra Space Storage Attn: Unit 74 2501 Cesar Chavez Street San Francisco, CA 94124

Please write 'BOOKBAG' in large letters, somewhere on the side of the box.

Please keep a record of your shipping information and tracking number; WFC2009 is not responsible for packages that go astray on their way to us. A letter acknowledging your donation will go out to you after the close of the convention.

This address is NOT for dealers wishing to ship their merchandise to the convention. Shipments to the Dealers Room will be accepted beginning in October. Please contact Dave Clark at [email protected] if you have any questions.

The shipping service at the convention, for both dealers and attendees, will be the United States Post Office. The USPS will be setting up a subsidiary station on Saturday and Sunday, and will provide Media Mail, 1st Class, and Priority Mail. Insurance and customs forms will be provided. For those wishing to ship stuff home via FedEx or UPS, the hotel maintains a business center with those services. The WFC will also have a "box farm" with plenty of sturdy cardboard boxes for packing. Hours for the USPS station will be posted at the convention.

Well, in this case, OUR local independent bookstores! But we are willing to share, courtesy of IndieBound! What is IndieBound? A community-oriented movement bringing together booksellers, readers, indie retailers, and anyone else with a passionate belief that healthy local economies help communities thrive — meaning that dollars, jobs, diversity, choice, and taxes stay local, creating strong, unique communities and happy citizens.

For a fairly comprehensive list of bookstores in the area, should you be planning to happily browse and buy while in town for World Fantasy, please visit this IndieBound link:

http://www.indiebound.org/indie-store-finder

For the best selection, pick "50 miles" and "50 stores" and choose:

San Jose / zipcode 95113

San Francisco / zipcode 94107

Marin/Napa area / zipcode 95404

Berkeley/East Bay / zipcode 94704

You’ll see each bookstore location flagged on the map and the sidebar will take you to the store’s profile and contact info (call before visiting). The Bay Area is blessed with several science fiction and fantasy stores, so make time to visit:

Borderlands Books - www.borderlands-books.com San Francisco SF’s #1 for SF, fantasy and horror books

10 Getting to the Convention There is a detailed description of how to get to the convention on our website at http://www.worldfantasy2009.org/?page_id=77. This is a slightly condensed version of how to get there by or car. If you wish to take bus, train, or other methods, please check the website for details.

The convention is at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California, a city approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of San Francisco. The convention site is in downtown San Jose. If you attended the 2002 , you will remember this hotel as ConJose’s headquarters and party hotel.

By Air

The Bay Area has three major airports: San Francisco (SFO), Oakland (OAK), and San Jose (SJC). We recommend flying to San Jose Airport, which is about 3 miles (5 km) from the Fairmont. The other airports are about 40 miles (65 km) away; getting from them to San Jose can be time consuming and inconvenient. However, particularly for people traveling from outside the US, SFO is a better choice for getting a direct flight. Just bear in mind that the time you save in the direct flight to SFO may be eaten up by getting from SFO to downtown San Jose.

Getting from SJC to the Fairmont Hotel

Taxis and Shuttles: There is no hotel shuttle. Your options for getting from the airport to the hotel include a taxi or shared-ride shuttle ($20-$25). We don’t recommend a car rental unless you need it during the convention. See notes on parking expenses at the end of this section.

Public Transit (VTA Rail): For the economy-minded, there is public transit available, in the form of the free #10 bus (catch the bus marked “Light Rail” on the headsign) to the Metro/Airport light rail stop, then catch a light rail train heading downtown (headsigns for “Winchester” or “Santa Teresa”). Light rail fare is $1.75 (buy a ticket from the vending machine at the station) and light rail stops in front of the Fairmont Hotel. Leave a comment on the website expressing interest and we’ll provide more information on the bus/light rail connection.

Getting from SFO to the Fairmont

Taxis and Shuttles: A shared-ride shuttle is $30-$40 one-way, while a taxi is at least $75 (not including tip). If you rent a car, you’ll have to pay $26/day to park that car at the Fairmont (or much less in one of the surface lots or parking garages in the area).

11 Public Transit (BART/Caltrain): The least expensive but most time-consuming way to get from SFO to downtown is to take the train. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system does not go to San Jose, but you can use it ($4 fare) to get from the airport to the Caltrain commuter rail line, then catch a train to San Jose ($6), then take a taxi, light rail, free downtown connection bus, or even walk the 0.8 mi (1.3 km). One of the webmasters here is a transit buff and will post detailed directions for using BART/ Caltrain if there is any interest.

You can also use the 511 transit system to map out a ride on Bay Area public transit: Use “SFO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, San Francisco” and “Paseo De Station, San Jose” as your start and end points, then provide your expected time you will leave SFO as your start-of-trip time to get an idea of the cost and time your travel will take. A typical trip costs about $12 and takes about 2 hours, but times vary considerably depending on when you arrive, and may not be available for very late night arrivals at SFO.

Getting from OAK to the Fairmont

Taxis and Shuttles: Taxis and shared-ride shuttles from Oakland International to downtown San Jose will cost approximately the same as from SFO, and a rental car also presents the same challenges as from SFO. There are two public-transit alternatives from OAK. Both require taking the AirBART shuttle bus ($3) to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station. From there, you have two choices, one relatively frequent and one that only works at limited times of the day.

Public Transit (BART/VTA): Take a BART train from Coliseum (trains run at least every fifteen minutes) to the end of the line at Fremont ($3.60), then catch the 180 or 181 bus operated by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation (VTA) ($3.50). This bus will drop you off within a block of the hotel. Be sure to check the schedules before making your plans, especially if arriving late at night.

Amtrak Capitol Corridor: The Amtrak Capitol Corridor service runs seven trains per day that stop at Coliseum Amtrak (connected to the BART station by pedestrian skywalk) and to to the San Jose Amtrak/Caltrain station. See “By Train” on the website for more information. Fare from Coliseum station is $13 (buy a ticket from the vending machine in the Amtrak station).

By Car/Parking

The San Jose Fairmont is in downtown San Jose at 170 S. Market Street. The only parking at the hotel itself is the hotel’s valet parking garage, which is $26/day. However, there are numerous downtown public parking facilities, including surface lots and garages, detailed at the San Jose Downtown Parking web site. Different lots and garages charge different rates, and some lots have free night and/or weekend parking. Most of the lots and garages near the Fairmont allow overnight parking, but you need to check the individual lot to confirm this. We have found that in some lots and garages near the hotel, even if you parked for several days, if you leave late at night or on a weekend, there is no charge; however, parking conditions change from time to time, so we cannot guarantee that you will be able to get free parking. 12 Members
