After they sailed out from the port of Tiku/Pariaman on the west coast, the sea suddenly ebbed, for that was the divine decree of God. As a consequence, their ship ran aground on the sand. The two datuk gathered all their children and kemanakan together and said, "Hai, children and kemanakan, let us tow this ship, because it has run aground on the sand." Their children answered, "We are afraid that we will be run over by the ship." Their kemanakan replied, "If that is the wish of our elders, let us tow the ship. It does not matter even if we are run over by the ship and killed in the process, for it is the ship of our elders that has run aground." All the kema­ nakan then got off onto the sand and pulled the ship. With the assis­ tance of the spirits, the ship floated again of itself and moved to the middle of the sea. Later, following the advice of Cati Bilang Pandai, their able servant, the two datuk decreed that from that time on all the property was to be given, not to the children, but to the kemanakan as a reward of their services.

Historically, the Minangkabau migrants have coexisted peacefully with local communities in which they settle, and there is no record of conflict between the Minangkabau migrants and local inhabitants. This study attempted to determine the values espoused by this nomadic community. The study was grounded in literature study approach of philosophical hermeneutics and utilized methodical elements, such as description, induction deduction, synthesis analysis, and heuristics. The study also applied observation, and interviews with the Minangkabau migrants. The findings revealed that the culture of this ethnic group explicitly encourages young people to venture abroad. The ethical values that form the basis of the outmigration’s of the Minangkabau community are affirmed by the adat (local) proverbs that prescribe strong work ethics, mutual respect, and an understanding of the local culture to which they outmigrate. Andaya In present-day Malaysia the dominant ethnicity is the Melayu (Malay), followed numerically by the Chinese and the Indians. A very small percentage comprises a group of separate ethnicities that have been clustered together by a Malaysian government statute of 1960 under the generalized name of Orang Asli (the Original People). Among the “Orang Asli” themselves, however, they apply names usually associated with their specific area or by the generalized name meaning “human being”. In the literature the Orang Asli are divided into three groups: The Semang or Negrito, the Senoi, and the Orang Asli Melayu.1 Among the “Orang Asli”, however, the major distinction is between themselves and the outside world, and they would very likely second the sentiments of the Orang Asli and Orang Laut (Sea People) in Johor who regard themselves as “leaves of the same tree”.2 Today the Semang live in the coastal foothills and inland river valleys of Perak, interior Pahang, and Ulu (upriver) Kelantan, and rarely occupy lands above 1000 meters in elevation. But in the early twentieth century, Schebesta commented that the areas regarded as Negrito country included lands from Chaiya and Ulu Patani (Singora and Patthalung) to Kedah and to mid-Perak and northern Pahang.3 Most now live on the fringes rather than in the deep jungle itself, and maintain links with Malay farmers and Chinese shopkeepers. In the past they appear to have also frequented the coasts.

The development of this discourse and its manifestation in Indonesian literary theory began with a postcolonial debate on the construction of Indonesian modernity, i.e., toward which center it is going to be oriented. The tension between Western-centric discourse, on the one hand, and traditional orientation, on the other, characterized the earliest intellectual debate in the 1930s. This argument took a different contour in the 1960s when the tension turned out to be between social realism and liberal humanism. The banning of leftist ideology and teaching after 1965 gave way to the unchallenged dominance of the traditional humanist outlook in the literary-critical scene. The paper argues that the present hegemony of traditional humanist approach in Indonesian consciousness is rooted in its distinctive development in these few decades. WHAT HAS BECOME OF THE SLENDANG? CHANGING IMAGES OF WOMEN AND JAVA Sita van Bemmelen and Mies Grijns The images of women in Java as depicted in academic studies, like their realities, have changed over the last half-century. An illuminating analogue can be found in the use of the slendang, a wide shawl originally made from batik cloth or from lurik, a striped coarsely woven material for daily use. To us, the transformation of the slendang over the past decades runs parallel to the development of studies on women in Java. The slendang is a predominantly female attribute, used by women and girls. Men occasionally use a slendang, but only for carrying small children. The anthropologist Hildred Geertz describes the slendang in the 1950s as more than just a piece of cloth for practical use: “Carrying a baby in a shawl is called nggéndong; and it is this action that is usually re-enacted as symbolic of the mother’s total care — for instance, at the wedding ceremony or at the harvest when the first ears of rice are carried home in a slendang. The slendang represents complete security…” (Geertz 1961:94). Women also use the slendang as a working “tool,” to transport other loads than babies such as firewood, trading goods, or jamu. The saying “sapikul, sagendong” depicts the different ways men and women carry goods: men in two baskets on a bamboo shoulder-pole, women in one basket fastened in a slendang on their backs.
