Abstract This thesis examines the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and voluntary labour initiatives (codes of conduct and standards) with special reference to banana production in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is the third biggest supplier of bananas to the United Kingdom (UK), but market access is determined by the major UK supermarket groups, and the terms and conditions dictated by these powerful actors impact the labour conditions on banana plantations. In this regard the banana supply chain is increasingly viewed as ‘buyer-driven’ and as such, the theoretical framework employed in the research is based on global commodity chain studies (Gereffi 1994, Gereffi et al. 2005). The thesis draws on interviews and focus groups organised with banana workers and their representatives over a two month period in 2006. However, the banana supply chain is not a simple linear model in terms of control and influence; there is a high degree of complexity regarding the social relations within it. The chain includes major transnational producers and trade unions, and an international framework agreement (IFA) is in place on some plantations, and there are also other interested parties - audit groups, NGOs and civil society groups - concerned with labour conditions on plantations. Interviews were conducted with these social actors both prior and following the period of fieldwork in Costa Rica. The thesis also reports on the Second International Banana Conference held in April 2005, a forum for the major players to debate the issues and conditions within the industry. The thesis shows that the leading supermarkets have considerable power over suppliers/producers. However, it is argued that the supermarkets’ professed desire to act socially responsibly to those workers employed on plantations is contradicted by the downward pressure exerted on the price of bananas and that this contributes to a downward spiral of labour conditions.     Spatial-Structural Relationships in Retail corporate Growth: A Case-Study of Kwik Save Group P.L.C. by Leigh Sparks* Retail companies develop and expand by combining both struc- tural attributes and spatial awareness. The spatial-structural development and growth of individual retail companies has been neglected in the growing retail literature. Through examin- ing in detail the growth and development of retail companies, concentrating on both the spatial and structural dimensions of development ad using the concepts and ideas emerging in cognate fields such as entrepreneurship, competitive strategy and innovation diffusion, it is postulated that a better under- standing of the complexities of retail growth will be produced. A case-study of Kwik Save Group P.L.C. is used here to explore these concepts, to build a spatial-structural theory of retail change and to demonstrate the relevance and usefulness of detailed study of individual firm. It has often been claimed that location is crucial to retailing,, but it is equally true that the retail offering and operation has to fit both the marketing and the wider competitive environment. Retailers have to determine what and how they are going to retail, where outlets are to be located in respect of the market and the competition and how the retail operations are going to be organised.

In particular, there has been a neglect of the process of introducing new technology. Based on a comparative study of two supermarket chains, this thesis examines the way in which technology is introduced into retail companies and the problems they encounter. The technology in question consisted of the computerisation of all head office and warehouse systems and the introduction of Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) and Portable Data Capture Units (PDCs) into the branches. Research methods included participant observation, interviews and analysis of documents. The study found that the introduction of new technology was not the result of a rational, pre-determined strategy, but that it evolved from a series of ad hoc decisions. Organizational processes played an important part in forming this emerging strategy and also influenced its successful implementation.

    Retail Change: a consideratici! of the UK food retail industry, 1950-2010. © Roger Clough 2002 Ph.D Middlesex University Abstract The immense changes to have taken place in UK food retailing during the second half of the 20th ccntury are detailed, explained and analysed, with constant référence to théories of retail change. The resuit is not just a history of UK food retail change post-1950, but a comprehensive évaluation and extension of retail change theory, with new driving forces and ideas elaborated, and a forecast of likely key developments to 2010. The thesis is based largely on the testimonies of key industry actors of the period, including past and présent executives of leading food retali organisations, and followed an un-structured interview approach, allowing stories to be told without unnecessary constraint. The development of the industry is detailed and explained, drawing heavily on thèse testìmonies, and this change is explained with référence to major factors with a direct hearing on the industry, such as government policy and socio-economie change. Because of the emphasis on witness accounts, the théories of retail change are analysed with a heavy focus on the people driving change, a refreshing change in a field where the historical nature of the subject tends to drive research towards secondary sources of data. The thesis contributes a better understanding of the forces driving the théories of retail change, and proposes an extension to the domain of application. The relevant éléments of the théories of retail change are implemented to forecast likely developments in the UK food retail industry to 2010, which is complemented by an 'expert' Delphi forecast and a projection of current socio-economie trends.
