Community Council Newsletter June 2016

Your community council

The next community council meeting will be on Wednesday 29 June, and you will meet your new Chair, Cllr Sunil Chopra and Vice Chair, Cllr Sandra Rhule.

I am sure we would all like to welcome them in their new roles, and give a big vote of thanks to the outgoing Chair Cllr Johnson Situ, and Vice-Chair Cllr Cleo Soanes for all their hard work and excellent leadership for the last two years

As the community council meetings continue to evolve to meet the needs of a changing society, it is important that we continue to deal with the issues that you are concerned about, so we will be looking for your input to determine the themes covered over the new round of meetings. Please let your friends and neighbours know, as the more residents that attend, the better it will be, and local democracy will be all the richer!

Peckham Youth Platform

If you are 13 – 19 and interested in art, design, technology, music and your local community, then we want you to get involved!

The Youth Platform is a fortnightly, youth-led, culture focused group for 13-19 year olds. Together they work on creative projects, meet artists and designers, go on visits and help organize events in Peckham Platform’s gallery space and in the surrounding area. The sessions are free of charge and no previous arts experience is required.

The aims of the project run in parallel to Peckham Platform’s aims of increasing accessibility to the arts and strengthening our community. As part of the Youth Platform you will help advise Peckham Platform on how to best achieve these aims and will consult on projects for the gallery. Hall for hire in Rye Lane

I would like to offer your care leavers the chance to reach financial autonomy through employment which could make the transition to independence that much easier. Our work with female care leavers includes finding them placements in apprenticeships, voluntary work and paid employment. In addition to great employment opportunities we also have a support team that specialises in working with young women with complex needs and we work to minimise any barriers into employment through workshops, training and 1:1 key working.

Southwark Smart Savers - don't miss out

The 2016 Smart Savers scheme went live in April.. Last year hundreds of Southwark students claimed their £10 voucher. Is your child a Southwark Smart Saver? If not, you have until 2 September 2016 to claim your voucher.

Southwark Smart Savers has been designed to help young people to save and teach them about responsible financial behaviour including experience of money matters, budgeting, saving and handling cash; giving them the tools to manage their money well into adulthood.

We want to raise a generation of financially savvy smart savers, starting with every year 6 child from Southwark. If your child is a resident of Southwark and is in year 6, they can claim a £10 voucher to deposit into a new or existing London Mutual Credit Union junior saver account.

How to claim your voucher

In February this year we sent a letter to all parents/carers of eligible children, however if you have not received the letter or have misplaced it, you can email us at [email protected] and we will send you a new letter.

If you have received our letter and voucher but are yet to redeem it, you can cash your voucher simply by:

Visiting any London Mutual Credit branch - don't forget to bring along the letter and your child's birth certificate. If you are not a member yourself, you will also need to bring proof of ID

You can either set up a new account for your child and deposit the £10 voucher or add the voucher to your child's existing credit union account.

London Mutual Credit Union is a not for profit organisation that provides a range of financial services to its members. They offer a safe and convenient place to save and also provide loans at a very reasonable rate of interest. London Mutual Credit Union is driven by an ethos of service to their members, rather than maximising profits.

Wanted – aspiring TV family with Caribbean roots

Caribbean family wanted to go “Back in Time” for BBC Two!

Wall to Wall Television, the makers of Long Lost Family, Who Do You Think You Are? and Back in Time for the Weekend are making a fantastic new living history series. Back in Time for Brixton takes one 2nd or 3rd generation Black British family through 60 years of cultural and social shifts, charting the story of how African-Caribbean immigration has changed British culture and society. From the arrival of the first families of the Windrush generation, to active recruitment from London Transport and the NHS, to the slow and sometimes questionable appearance of Black faces on British TV. Back in Time for Brixton will celebrate and explore Black British history and its place and influence in British popular culture. As with the previous Back in Time For… series, we’ll recreate a home and include celebrity visitors. Past shows have included Trevor Nelson, Angela Rippon and Trevor Brooking, and we’ll also have a Historian discussing social and economic issues to back to up our historical research. Any families with a minimum of two children aged 8+ or older interested in this exciting opportunity should email [email protected] for details on how to apply.

Creating new burial space

Creating new burial space: extending Camberwell New Cemetery into the old nursery site at Honor Oak Southwark, like many other boroughs, is quickly running out of burial space. If nothing is done about it we could run out completely by next year, leaving residents without the option to be buried locally. To avoid this, the council consulted local people on the future of the burial service, who said that they felt that the best option was to provide new burial areas within our existing cemeteries of Camberwell Old Cemetery and Camberwell New Cemetery. The currently unused old nursery site at Camberwell New Cemetery, beside Honor Oak Park, has been identified as a space we could use for burial space in the short term. Our proposal for this site will: Bring the area back into public use and make it accessible to everyone Provide up to 1000 burials spaces for all residents, regardless of faith Include landscape improvements Improve biodiversity and enhance recreational use.

Consultation on this proposal to create much needed burial space in the old nursery site next to Camberwell New Cemetery will be occurring in June 2016.

Information on the plans for this site and the consultation being undertaken will be made available on our website in the next few weeks https://consultations.southwark.gov.uk/

Its your future…

Relaunch of Peckham Settlement

The Peckham Settlement was established in 1896 to provide services to the people of Peckham which it did very successfully for over 100 years. However, as trading conditions worsened, the Settlement was sadly forced into administration in August 2012. The Administrators sold the Settlement's premises on Goldsmith Road in order to repay the Settlement's debts. Administration is often the first step towards the winding up of the organisation concerned but happily in this case, the Settlement's creditors have been repaid in full, the Settlement has come out of administration and control has been passed back to the trustees. The trustees' intention is that the Settlement should resume its charitable activities in Peckham and they have invested the surplus from the sale of the premises. The Settlement's main aim to start with will be to make small grants out of the income produced from its investments to local charities and other voluntary sector organisations. At this stage, the trustees will run the Settlement themselves but when the Settlement re-establishes itself, the trustees may take on a part time paid staff member to deal with administration. The trustees are re-launching the Settlement from Peckham Library at 6 pm on 16 June and they have invited their friends and supporters to join the trustees in marking the Settlement's return to Peckham. The trustees greatly appreciate the support they have received from so many through some very difficult years. They're delighted to be back and very much look forward to playing their part in supporting the local community once more.

Peckham regeneration updates

Peckham Rye Station Square Southwark Council and the Greater London Authority are transforming the entrance to Peckham Rye Station into a generous, vibrant public square. This will enhance and celebrate the beautiful Grade II listed station building and create spacious routes for people to walk through, as well as calmer, greener spaces for people to rest and meet. The railway arches will be revealed to provide places for local and independent businesses to trade, animating the square and providing a sense of safety. The refurbishment and extension of the Blenheim Grove corner building will create space for community groups to meet alongside affordable work space for entrepreneurs and start up businesses.

Following extensive public engagement through the co design process and detailed design development to prepare the planning application, permission was granted in March 2016. The council is making progress towards finding new premises for the existing businesses, such as in the Peckham Palms project (see below). It is anticipated that construction works will begin in the autumn.

Peckham Palms

As part of the Peckham Rye Station Square project a number of retail tenants that are currently using the units along Blenheim Grove, many of whom provide hair and beauty services will need to be re- located during construction.

Earlier this year we appointed design studio Something & Son and business support specialists Tree Shepherd to work with these businesses to develop ideas for a bespoke centre for afro-Caribbean hair and beauty in Peckham. After a number of one to one interviews and group workshops, the team has developed ‘Peckham Palms’. This new centre for hair and beauty draws its inspirations from Peckham’s cultural heritage and distinctiveness and will cement Peckham’s reputation as the leading destination for affordable and quality afro-Caribbean hair styling and beauty in London.

The council will submit a planning application this month and the aim is to open the Palms later this year.

Copeland Road Car Park update

We have ambitious plans to provide 11,000 new council homes by 2043, with the first 1,500 by 2018.

These homes will be provided through a combination of development on our existing estates, buying some directly from developers and developing land that we own through the regeneration partnership.

The Proposals This exhibition event is designed to update you on the status of the proposals before we submit them for planning and the evolution of the proposals throughout the consultation process. The exhibition will take place in June, and residents who live within a three hundred metre radius will receive a leaflet alerting them to the venue, date and time. The details will also be made available online at http://tinyurl.com/CopelandCP Please note that this is not a consultation event, this is a chance to see the proposals before they are submitted for planning only.

Opportunity at Peckham Library

Peckham Library Square

Southwark Council is seeking a gallery operator to manage and programme a new non-commercial gallery space on Peckham Library Square. The new gallery space, with a footprint of 337sqm, is part of a mixed development on the ground floor of a new residential site at the entrance into the square from Peckham High Street.

Our vision for the gallery is to provide a year-round public engagement programme of high quality exhibitions, artist residencies and events, which provides a platform for both established and emerging artists, and forms part of a hub of cultural and creative activity, which is attractive and accessible to local people. The successful operator will have demonstrable knowledge of running a gallery venue, a strong business plan to maintain a financially sustainable model for the use of the spaces and clear evidence of the impact that their work will have on local residents, audiences and the wider artistic community/cultural sector.

Peckham town centre is one of the borough’s key regeneration areas. The significant and growing cultural industries presence in Peckham contributes to place making, community cohesion, promoting local areas, increased footfall and economic growth in the borough. The successful operator will also demonstrate an understanding of the local Peckham context, and how they will respond to and enhance the town centre’s unique character and identity.

Download the operator brief and site plan. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/4567/peckham_library_square

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 12 July at 5pm.
