Per ciascuna poesia è indicato il numero attribuito da Franklin (F) e quello della precedente edizione critica di Johnson (J). Fra parentesi è indicata la datazione, in genere stabilita sulla base della calligrafia del manoscritto. Quando le date delle due edizioni critiche non sono uguali le ho indicate entrambe. Le date sono nella quasi totalità dei casi approssimative e precedute, in entrambe le edizioni, da "circa"; ho omesso sempre questa indicazione. Quando il cambio pagina corrisponde a una nuova strofa ho inserito il simbolo "[]". Nelle note sono frequentemente citate le lettere, per le quali ho indicato il numero stabilito nell'edizione critica di Johnson preceduto da "L". Nella stessa edizione sono presenti in appendice i "frammenti in prosa", con una numerazione propria; per citarli ho utilizzato il numero preceduto da "PF". Per le citazioni bibliche nelle note mi sono servito dell'edizione ufficiale della CEI, ma in molti casi ho tradotto direttamente dalla versione tradizionale di riferimento per i paesi anglosassoni: la "King James Version", pubblicata nel 1611 in Inghilterra durante il regno di Giacomo I. Sempre nelle note, per i numerosi riferimenti a Susan Gilbert Dickinson, prima amica e poi cognata di Emily Dickinson (sposò il fratello Austin nel 1856), ho utilizzato solo il nome: "Susan". La "Numerazione Johnson/Franklin", che in quest'ultimo volume comprende tutte le poesie, può agevolare la ricerca di una specifica poesia a partire dalla numerazione Johnson, l'unica per ora usata nelle traduzioni italiane in commercio. Davis* Some years ago, when I worked as a volunteer in the Yale-New Haven Emergency Room with battered women, I read a psychological profile I knew intimately: The Controller has a history of getting his own way .... Nonviolent abuse among Controllers is characterized by discounting the needs, desires and feelings of their mates. Violence occurs when the Controller feels he can no longer dominate or when his authority is questioned. He believes himself to be justified in his abuse, and his wife will sometimes accept his reasons. Coincidentally, this article was published the same month and year my husband left me. But even then, I could not recognize him or my situation in the profile. Todd always possessed a volcanic temper, but I had never felt like a battered wife. In the first year of our marriage he grabbed my shoulder hard enough to rip my blouse.
