He was devastated to learn that he should’ve joined the CIA instead, because the military services don’t have that particular enlisted job. Regardless, he fell in love with the military and made it both a pas- sion and a career, retiring with 23 years of service. Rod spent 11 of those years as an Air Force first sergeant, helping to solve the problems of the enlisted corps. Since his retirement from the military in 1998, Rod has become a world-renowned military careers expert. Through his highly popular U.S. Military Information Web site on About.com (http://usmilitary.about.com), Rod has advised thousands of troops about all aspects of U.S. armed forces career information. This is Rod’s fourth military book. Two of his previ- ous books, ASVAB For Dummies and Veteran Benefits For Dummies, were published by Wiley. Rod is the proud father of twin girls, both of whom are enjoying successful careers in the Air Force. He currently resides in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he is attempting to prove that there is no such thing as too much sunshine. Delisle and his family spent a year in East Jerusalem as part of his wife’s work with the non-governmental organiza- tion Doctors Without Borders. They were there for the short but brutal Gaza War, a three-week-long military strike that resulted in more than 1000 Palestinian deaths. In his interactions with the emergency medical team sent in by Doctors Without Borders, Delisle eloquently plumbs the depths of the conflict. Some of the most moving moments in Jerusalem are the in- teractions between Delisle and Palestinian art students as they explain the motivations for their work. Interspersed with these simply told, affecting stories of suffering, Delisle deftly and often drolly recounts the quotidian: crossing checkpoints, going ko- sher for Passover, and befriending other stay-at-home dads with NGO-employed wives. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

Morrison 1 FOREWORD By William J. Bennett Ronald Reagan always called me on my birthday. Even after he had left the White House, he continued to call me on my birthday. He called all his Cabinet members and close asso- ciates on their birthdays. I’ve never known another man in public life who did that. I could tell that Alzheimer’s had laid its firm grip on his mind when those calls stopped coming. The President would have agreed with the sign borne by hundreds of pro-life marchers each January 22nd: “Doesn’t Everyone Deserve a Birth Day?” Reagan’s pro-life convic- tions were an integral part of who he was. All of us who served him knew that. Many of my colleagues in the Reagan administration were pro-choice. Reagan never treat- ed any of his team with less than full respect and full loyalty for that. But as for the Reagan administration, it was a pro-life administration. I was the second choice of Reagan’s to head the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). It was my first appointment in a Republican administration. I was a Democrat. Reagan had chosen me after a well-known Southern historian and literary critic hurt his candidacy by criticizing Abraham Lincoln. My appointment became controversial within the Reagan ranks because the Gipper was highly popular in the South, where residual animosities toward Lincoln could still be found.

Richard Stevens ([email protected]), University of Colorado at Boulder Dr. Christopher Bell ([email protected]), University of Colorado at Boulder Abstract: The election of 2008 proved a significant moment for the role of popular culture in political decision-making, particularly for comic books. As Jewett and Lawrence have observed, the American Monomyth is an influential narrative for activating attitudes of justice, dealing with cultural threats and establishing social norms. However, the American Monomyth appears to be exclusively masculine in structure, perhaps explaining why there is more support for a minority “hero” in the American psyche than for a female. This paper reviews 283 portrayals of sitting American presidents in American comic books and analyzes the differences between those portrayals, the portrayals of Barack Obama and John McCain, and the portrayals of Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama. While most U.S. public official portrayals emphasize the public office (and often as dependent upon super-powered intervention), Obama and McCain actually take on characteristics of the superhero archetype. In particular, the “origin stories” of McCain and Obama presented in the IDW and Antarctic Press biographies make use of the classic superhero trope, while similar comic depictions of the female public figures struggled to fit the established conventions of the genre. The researchers consider similarities between the birth of the superhero archetype during the Great Depression and the 2008 economic meltdown to consider the environment that produced the superhero associations, and consider the potential ramifications in electorate expectations for the superheroic framing of America’s commander-in-chief, as well as its inability to transfer superheroic traits to female figures.

Richard Richards, chairman of the Republican National Committee, sat, alone, at a table near the podium. It was a testy breakfast at the Capitol Hill Club on May 19, 1981. Avoiding Richards were a who’s who from the independent groups of the emergent New Right: Terry Dolan of the National Conservative Political Action Committee, Paul Weyrich of the Committee for the Survival of a Free Congress, the direct-mail impresario Richard Viguerie, Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum and STOP ERA, Reed Larson of the National Right to Work Committee, Ed McAteer of Religious Roundtable, Tom Ellis of Jesse Helms’s Congressional Club, and the billionaire oilman and John Birch Society member Bunker Hunt. Richards, a conservative but tradition-minded political operative from Utah, had complained about the independent groups making mischieF where they were not wanted and usurping the traditional roles of the political party. They were, he told the New Rightists, like “loose cannonballs on the deck of a ship.” Nonsense, responded John Lofton, editor of the Viguerie-owned Conservative Digest. If he attacked those fighting hardest for Ronald Reagan and his tax cuts, it was Richards himself who was the loose cannonball.1 The episode itself soon blew over; no formal party leader would follow in Richards’s footsteps in taking independent groups to task.
