Sytsma, B.A., M.T.S. Marquette University, 2018 Origen has traditionally been famous for his universalism, but many scholars now express doubt that Origen believed in a universal and permanent apocatastasis. This is because many scholars are convinced that Origen’s teaching on moral autonomy (or freedom of choice) is logically incompatible with the notion that God foreordains every soul’s future destiny. Those few scholars who do argue that Origen believed in both moral autonomy and universal salvation either do not know how to reconcile these two views in Origen’s theology, or their proposed “solutions” are not convincing. In this dissertation I make two preliminary arguments which allow the question of logical compatibility to come into focus. -

Christ is prophesied, witnessed, predicted, typified, and prefigured; but apart from a few alleged christophanic appearances, he is largely the subject of another, historically subsequent Testament. This thesis surveys the christological approaches to the Old Testament since the early 20th century breach made within historicism, introduces a patristic mindset, proposes an ontological foundation to a sacramental (real-presence) approach, then demonstrates this through a reading of Zechariah 9-14. The goal is to bring together three arenas of study—exegetical, historical, theological—and demonstrate how their united lens clarifies the substantial referent of Scripture, namely Christ. The character of the OT witness is thus presented in christological terms, suggesting a reading that recognizes the divine person within the text itself, at home in the sensus literalis. By way of analogy to the Cyrillian hypostatic union and a Lutheran eucharistic comprehension, the task is to show how one encounters the hypostasis of Christ by means of the text’s literal sense. -

The Eucharist Sacrifice and the Moment Changing Utopian in Post Reformation Christianity ADAM SELIGMAN The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel ABSTRACT In this study, the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, and especially English Puritanism, is analyzed in terms of the transformation of the soteriological doctrines of Christianity. This transformation, in turn, is seen as crucial to a restructuring of utopian themes in Christian civilization. Based on the restructuring of models of social authority and of Christian community, a new vision of the ideal social order was posited. The uto- pian visions posited by these changes and the contradictions inherent in them are viewed as central to the emergence of modern notions of political and social praxes. Introduction IN THIS STUDY, it will be argued that the major assumptions under- lying Christian utopian visions and their realization were radically transformed in the period of the Protestant Reformation. Indeed, the Refor- mation and, more specifically, its Calvinist variants, will be presented as con- taining a salient utopian or millennial moment-with lasting importance for the structuring of modern social life. In pursuing this line of inquiry, we are in fact following on the thought of Max Weber, who saw in the 'inner-worldliness' of ascetic Protestantism one of the fundamental components of the modern world order (Weber, 1958; Schluchter, 1979; Eisenstadt, 1968, 1988). The present study will explore the role of ascetic Protestantism in fundamentally restructuring one of the major and defining components of the Western Christian tradition. The transforma- tion effected by ascetic Protestantism in the utopian models and modes of millennial action within the Western Christian tradition was, it is argued, a crucial aspect in the development of the modern socio-political order. -

Jesus and His Teachings Jesus and His Teachings Subject Area: World History Time Required: 1 class session General Topics: Origins of Christianity in the Roman world, ancient Judaism, important individuals in Classical Mediterranean societies, religious views in Classical Mediterranean societies Average Grade Level from Readable.io: 10.3 SUMMARY This lesson on Jesus and his teachings focuses on two biblical texts, the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew and the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke. It asks students to consider the historical context of the two sermons, the influence of Hellenistic Judaism on the authors of the two Gospels, and the challenges of using such literature to reconstruct history. To get the students started engaging with the texts, the lesson asks students to compare two artistic depictions of the sermons. It then moves to a close reading of both sermons using a guided reading graphic organizer and a resource developed by Advanced Placement called a SOAPStone graphic organizer. Using these tools to engage with the sermons will sharpen students’ critical reading skills as well as give them methods they can use when they read other demanding texts. Coming from two of the earliest accounts of Jesus’ teachings, these passages stem from a time when Hellenistic Judaism and nascent Christianity were both shaping portrayals of Jesus. Hence, the lesson includes resources to help students analyze how each sermon reflects its ancient cultural context and to consider the larger question of how scholars arrive at interpretive and historical conclusions when they have limited sources from which to draw. -

Ignatian Spirituality and Theology
IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY AND THEOLOGY Bernard Sesboüé, SJ Professor emeritus Fundamental and dogmatic theology Centre Sèvres, Paris, France here certainly must be an “Ignatian” way of doing theology. Of course it would not be the only way and Tother spiritual families have been inspired by other “ways of proceeding.” In these pages I would like to allude to the method that seems to me to be based on the spirituality of St. Ignatius and are illustrated by several great Jesuit theologians of the 20th century. Ignatius of Loyola and theology St. Ignatius never was a theologian by trade. He only became a student himself late in life. But he took his theological formation in Paris very seriously, because he was convinced that he could not “help souls” without first doing the necessary studies. He studied during troubled times in the context of the early Reformation in Paris.1 Ignatius and his companions sided with moderates who sought to reconcile the desire for a faith that was more interior and personal with the doctrinal authority of the Church. They were open to the progress of the Renaissance; they favored the study of the “three languages,” Hebrew, Greek and Latin. But they wanted to preserve classical references to scholastic theology as found in its better representatives. Ignatius was very vigilant in what concerned orthodoxy and “feeling with the Church,” but at the same time he advised his companion Bobadilla to combine NUMBER 115 - Review of Ignatian Spirituality 27 IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY AND THEOLOGY positive theology with scholastic theology, which involved the study of languages. -

Ford, CSC, S.T.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates and compares the hermeneutics of the French Jesuit theologian, Henri de Lubac (1896-1991), and the German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2001). The writings of both Gadamer and de Lubac continue to generate scholarly investigation, including proposals to apply their insights to contemporary biblical interpretation. Although de Lubac and Gadamer were contemporaries, they never directly engaged each other’s writings; this dissertation brings their thought into dialogue. Chapter One provides a biographical overview of the lives of both scholars by situating the texts that will be examined within the broader context of each work. Since de Lubac approached the subject of biblical interpretation chiefly as an historian of exegesis, the first step in this comparative investigation is a formulation of de Lubac’s hermeneutical principles. Chapter Two, which constitutes the major portion of this dissertation, analyzes de Lubac’s works Catholicisme, Histoire et Esprit, Exégèse médiévale, and La Postérité spirituelle de Joachim de Flore in view of understanding his hermeneutics. -

Scripture: Selected Scriptures Code: 80-369 One of the strange paradoxes in the church is that the world is full of baptized non-Christians, millions of them, all over the planet, baptized non-Christians, while at the same time, the church is full of non-baptized Christians, like some of you. What a strange paradox that is. And it raises the issue of baptism and what it is and why people are so confused about it. We here at Grace Community Church understand baptism biblically. We understand its method, we understand its meaning. We have even, through the years, put baptisms on the radio, which no other ministry that I know of has ever done. We have, through the years, in the early days of our Shepherds’ Conferences, taken one of the nights of Shepherds’ Conference to do baptisms. We had a baptism last week at the conclusion of the Truth Matters conference. And essentially, just about every single Sunday night through the year, right here, we have testimonies of people being baptized. We understand what believer’s baptism is from Scripture. But there’s a world of people who don’t get it, who don’t understand it. And there are people who don’t know that it is important and don’t think the methodology is important or even the time when a person is baptized. There are folks who are just plain confused about baptism. What is its method? And what is its meaning? And, in particular, What about the baptizing of infants? Which is how you get a world full of non-Christians who have been baptized as infants. -

He received a degree in letters from the Sorbonne in 1927, studied philos- ophy in Jersey, the Channel Islands, from 1931 to 1934, and theology in Lyon- Fourvière, from 1934 to 1938. He was awarded a Ph.D. at the Sorbonne in 1943 and a Ph.D. at the Institut Catholique, Paris, in 1944. Daniélou entered the Society of Jesus in 1929 and was ordained priest in 1938. He occupied the Chair of Christian Origins at the Institut Catholique from 1944 to 1969. He became a member of the editorial board of Études in 1943 and co- editor, with Henri de Lubac, of Sources Chrétiennes in 1944. -

book reviews 115 Gill K. Goulding A Church of Passion and Hope. The Formation of an Ecclesial Disposition from Ignatius Loyola to Pope Francis and the New Evangelization. Bloomsbury, London- New York 2015, ix + 330 pp. isbn 9780567664679. £19.99; us $29.95. In recent years, the history of the Jesuits has increasingly been imagined as a narrative of development from the sixteenth century and Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), founder of the Jesuits, to the 21st century and Francis, the Jesuit pope. In this new book, the author, an associate professor of Systematic Theol- ogy at Regis College,Toronto, highlights what she calls an “ecclesial disposition” from Ignatius to Francis. Such a disposition she finds in the Rules for Think- ing with the Church, some eighteen rules appended by Ignatius to his Spiritual Exercises, a book first published in 1548. Against interpreters of Ignatius that minimize the role of such ‘rules’ in the Exercises, or see them as extrinsic to the principal focus of the Exercises, Goulding argues that they are central to them and to an authentic understanding of the life and work of Ignatius. Careful to acknowledge the difficulty of translating the phrase sentire cum ecclesia, Goulding makes clear that what Ignatius meant was as much an affective, loving relationship with the Church as an intellectual acceptance of Church teachings. In the Presupposition to the Exercises, Ignatius lauds a readiness to give a positive interpretation to a neighbor’s words. Goulding shows that Ignatius recommends a similarly positive attitude and course of action in one’s response to Church teachings and practices. -
