Hip hop was sung and chanted. Hip hop was more than just music. It was a style: a life style, a spirit, a feeling. Today’s hip hop has lost a lit- tle of its elegance and originality mainly because artists exaggerate the “money, hoes and power” stereotype. There are a select few who remember hip hop’s roots and its inten- tions. There are a select few who are still accepted when they remove their headphones and backpacks and don the pink fur, ice the grill and jump in the Range. 05.03.2nr.45 son they were like, “We don’t want your name on it. We’ll pay you, but you can’t put KutMasta Kurt.” That was like the beginning of the strain. At the time I wanted to wrap-up a project with Keith (the Masters Of Illusion project)—and because I had already been working with Motion Man (who was on the back burner for 10 years)—I had to finish Black Elvis. We still went on to do the Dr. Dooom and Masters Of Illusion albums and I still helped with the Matthew album. But after that I was really just Keith’d out. He wanted to keep going, but I didn’t like the direction and I needed to take a break. He was- n’t too happy about that. -

Tashan Dorrsett is his newest (and freshest) alias in a long list of pseudonyms. The album (a true ‘album’ - not a collection of tracks cobbled together by someone outside Keith’s circle) is a departure from his more science fiction/fantasy-oriented characters (Dr. Octagon & Dr. Dooom), he instead offers up a gritty Bronx reality show, starring Tashan as the antihero – the concept described by Keith in his own words: “Tashan Dorrsett is the reality person from New York City with an image of being real and regular, dealing with daily life situations. The second responds, trying to outdo his adversary by conjuring up even sharper verbal jabs. This goes on for several rounds until one of them gets tripped up in his words, or until the audience asserts its judgment with cheers or jeers. Such a battle could be happening right now in a Brooklyn basement or at a Bronx block party, at an open-mic night or in a street-corner cipher. It also could have happened three millennia ago, at a poetry contest in ancient Greece. The Greeks may not have been rappers, but they cer- tainly knew how to put on a freestyle battle. The Greek tra- dition of “capping” involved contests between two or more 175 0465003471_bradley 12/5/08 11:08 AM Page 176 176 BOOK OF RHYMES poets matching verses on set themes, responding to one an- other “by varying, punning, riddling, or cleverly modifying” that particular theme. Like today’s freestyle rap battles be- tween rappers, these ancient poetic competitions were largely improvised. As classical scholar Derek Collins ex- plains, “The ability of the live performer to cap his adversary with a verse . while keeping in step with theme and meter at hand and at the same time producing puns, riddles, ridicule, depends among other things upon improvisation.” As with rap battles, the competitive spirit of these Greek rhyme contests sometimes spilled over into physical vio- lence. -

His true passion for music emerged only after discovering the electric violin and its almost .lu infinite possibilities. His decision to break away from the world of classical music came shortly thereafter. Since then, Chris has been striving to develop his musical expression, constantly trying to discover new sounds on his instrument. All Reitz Reserved is Chris Reitz’ very first instrumental solo project. It started as a flexible live-looping program, that could easily adapt to his specific needs. Chris is constantly trying to explore new sonar spheres, without losing secure ground and drifting too far away. The sounds of his electric violin are altered, delayed, distorted and looped. Only recently he made his first steps into the world of electronic music by adding beats and textures to the violin: a turning point in his young career. His personal influences range from Rock to Folk and Ambient music. Being deeply inspired by acts and producers like Massive Attack, Emancipator, Chapelier Fou and Bonobo, just to name a few, his music moved in the direction of Trip-Hop and Downtempo.
